How to Build Reading Skills
● Read Aloud with your child● Explain to your child the cover of a book, title,
author(writes the story), and illustrator (draws the pictures).
● As you read with your child, ask them questions: “Who are the characters? What are their names?” “Where does the story take place?” “What is the problem in the story?” “Did you like the story? Why?” Did you not like the story? Why?
● Have your child look for familiar words.● Have your child flip the pages.
How to Building Writing Skills
● Write in Sand:Have your child write in sand (Kinetic Sand/Purchase from Target or Lakeshore Learning). Examples: letters of the alphabet, first name, beginning sound of picture cards.
● Draw a Picture: Have your child draw a picture & see if they can label with beginning sound.
● Rainbow Writing: Write your child’s name on lined paper, then have them trace using the colors of the rainbow.
How to Build Number Sense● 1:1 Correspondence-Have your child touch objective
as they count. Examples:Bears, Cars,Shells, Rocks,Legos
● Then have your child see if they can group in different ways. Examples: size, color, shape,make a group of 5
● When you are at the grocery store or farmer’s market, let your child choose which fruits or vegetables you should buy, have them count as they place in bag. Also have your child place fruit or vegetable on scale to see how much they weigh.
