The Importance of Communicationin Virtual Learning Environments
As the online learning phenomenon has grown, concerns about appropriate and effective teaching practices in this environment have increased accordingly. Research shows the positive correlation that effective communication has on student achievement. So in an environment where educators, parents, and students have limited face-to-face contact, apprehension is expected.
EdisonLearning® eSchoolware Instructional Tools enable robust communication between students, parents and teachers and administrators.
75% of school districts have students currently enrolled in fully online or blended courses.
And this trend continues to grow. Over the past three years, the number of students engaged in online courses has increased by over 45%.

95% Satisfaction Rate
“Provost Academy is great. It’s completely different than a traditional school, and it’s completely different than what you think. It really is a first rate school.”
“My favorite classes are American History and Life Skills, because it is an elective that is helping me prepare for life after high school…using credit cards, living on my own, really useful stuff.”
“I like Provost Academy because if I need to I can go to school at night or on the weekends. Also, I can attend school at my own pace. If I’m behind in one subject or ahead in another subject, I don’t have to rush myself or wait for others to catch up.”
“For us what separates Provost from other traditional high schools is that it allows the flexibility that our daughter needs to pursue her interest in the performing arts and ballet.”

The Results
•In its first year, CAOLA program had 13 participating districts. The program has now grown to 17 school districts in various regions of the state with more growth in the fall of 2010.
•The program started with 17 students successfully earning summer school credits. CAOLA now has 230 students enrolled in over 70 different courses.
•The CAOLA model has proven to be cost-effective, saving districts thousands of dollars when compared to dollars they would need to spend on sending students to virtual charter schools.
“The CAOLA program has helped our students to access courses that they typically would not be able to take, whether it is due to limited offerings or scheduling conflicts. This year one of our students was able to take a Chinese course. Financially, it doesn’t make sense for our district to hire a teacher to teach this course, but eCourses in the CAOLA program gave our student the opportunity for a valuable l earning experience.”
- Kevin Roberts, Director of Curriculum & CAOLASite Coordinator Big Spring School District

The Challenge
School districts in Pennsylvania were facing two challenges. First, many districts did not have the resources to provide students with online learning programs. With no option in the district, increasing numbers of students were leaving to attend virtual charter or other non-district schools. Secondly, small districts were struggling to provide expanded course selections for their students. Courses, such as AP courses and foreign languages like Chinese, were not available due to lack of means to hire teachers for these specific topics. Capital Area Intermediate Unit (CAIU) wanted to help its member districts address these challenges. They sought to redesign their high school offerings to increase learning options for high school students through online learning.
The Solution
CAIU established the Capital Area Online Learning Association (CAOLA) in 2009 to provide flexible online learning options to its member districts. Partnering with EdisonLearning, they expanded their high school offerings through EdisonLearning’s eCourses. CAOLA was also able to offer a full-time online high school program through EdisonLearning’s eAcademy.
