Edison High School Mission Statement

Our mission is to educate all students by providing a challenging relevant curriculum and, ad-dressing their personal and academic needs, in a safe and supportive environment, develop-ing critical thinkers, effective communicators, and self directed, productive individuals.

Coastline ROP The 2011-2012 school years are off and running with over 100 sophomores, juniors and seniors enrolled in ROP classes! ROP benefits those going directly into the work force by developing knowledge and skills, which help students to qualify for higher paying positions. ROP bene-fits those continuing on to college by providing a practical hands-on experi-ence related to a particular major. This experience can give students an edge with admissions officers when students apply for impacted programs. ROP helps because ROP reflects a serious interest and a realistic desire to pursue a par-ticular field of study. ROP classes on high school transcripts can be evidence of career exploration and can be used to enhance resumes and entrance essays. ROP is available to any student 16 years and older and can be taken for elective credit. Edison students enrolled in ROP courses at surround-ing high schools include Administration of Justice, Careers with Children, Retail Sales and Merchandis-ing, Computer Aided Drafting, First Responder, Fire Technology, Animal Health Care, and Entrepreneur-ship, to name just a few! DON’T DELAY now is the time to investigate the ROP opportunity! See Mrs. Osbourne in the Career Center, room 121 or call 962-1356 ext. 4436 E-mail [email protected]

Library News Destiny is the new program our school uses to check out both textbooks and li-brary books. Your student may create an account in this system to keep track of textbooks and library books checked out. Students may also renew library books, put books on hold, request books from other campuses and suggest books for li-brary purchase. We plan to go paperless in the library by sending re-minders of when books are about to be due via email. Overdue notices will also be emailed to students. To create an account, go to: http://destiny.hbuhsd.org/ ∗ Choose your school. ∗ Click on Create Account in the upper left corner. ∗ Enter student last name. Barcode number is stu-

dent ID number. ∗ Verify student birthday and create user name and

password. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments. Thanks for reading, Stephanie Taylor [email protected] Teacher Librarian

From the Guidance Office The guidance staff, which includes three guidance spe-cialists, a registrar, a college & career center specialist, a school counselor, a student support specialist, two psychologists and an administrator, would like to wel-come you to the 2011-2012 school year. We are off to a great start with 2732 students. We look forward to sup-porting academic, college and career goals for students so that they will have a positive and successful four years at Edison High School.

COLLEGE ADMISSION TESTING

Seniors can test through the December test date to qualify for 4-year college admission. The SAT Reasoning test and the ACT w/ writing test are equivalent in the eyes of the college admission office.

SAT Test Dates Registration Deadlines December 3rd November 8th January 28th December 30th Go online to www.sat.collegeboard.com to register. Click on the Students tab and then on the SAT link for more informa-tion. ACT Test Dates Registration Deadline December 10th November 5th Go online to www.actstudent.org to confirm dates and to register. Create an ACT Student Web account by clicking on the Sign up/Log In button. (The school code for EHS is 051218) PSAT Juniors who are thinking about attending a 4-year college should take the PSAT being offered at EHS on Saturday, Oc-tober 15th at 8 AM. The PSAT can never hurt a student’s chance of admission and Juniors who score well may qualify for National Merit Recognition and/or scholarship opportuni-ties. Sign up early to ensure you have the opportunity to take the test. Sophomores who would like a chance to take the PSAT (for practice only) may buy their $21 ticket at the Financial Office on Tuesday, October 11th or Wednesday, October 12th. Freshmen are allowed to take the PSAT for practice, but are advised to wait until at least their sophomore year. The main reason is that freshmen have not been taught the material on the test. Even if their math knowledge is accelerated, they have not been exposed to the appropriate level of English instruction. Tickets are $21 and will go on sale for Juniors through Wednesday, October 12th in the Financial Office. COLLEGE APPLICATIONS CSU applications begin online October 1st and have a submission deadline of Novem-ber 30th. UC application opens for submission November 1 through November 30th. PRIVATE AND OUT OF STATE college application availability and deadlines vary. Applica-tions can be found on the college websites. Students are re-sponsible to obtain their own application information. Pay strict attention to deadlines!

PRIVATE SCHOOL APPLICATION RECOMMENDATIONS Be sure to contact your teachers and Mrs. Quay for recom-mendations at least one month before the application is due. Mrs. Quay completes the counselor recommendations. Stu-dents must have a list of their activities (resume), a transcript release form, and three comment sheets from teachers on file in the Career Center. Come to the Career Center to pick up a Secondary School Report packet to give to teachers to request this information. This information is separate from the formal teacher recom-mendations required by most private schools. SCHOLARSHIPS Mrs. Quay maintains a list of current scholarship information which is posted online at www.edisonchargers.com, Student Services, Career Center. Students should check the list fre-quently or come to the Career Center to review the paper ap-plication on file. Most of the applications for scholarships during September to December are national contests. After that, more local scholarships become available. Be sure to never pay for scholarship information. Free scholarship in-formation can be found on the Web – www.fastweb.com, www.finaid.org, and www.studentaid.ed.gov Please review the list of various scholarship websites at the Career Center website to register for scholarship eligibility. Refer to your district planning guide for a list of additional scholarship web-sites. FINANCIAL AID The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) forms will be available online in December. Earliest submission date is January 1st. All students that want to apply for Fed-eral financial aid fill out this form online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. State aid is in the form of a Cal Grant www.calgrants.org and is determined by filling out a GPA Information Release form and submitting it to Mrs. Quay. Any student applying to private institutions may need to fill out another form called the CSS PROFILE These forms are available NOW and can be submitted as early as September 15th. Submit the CSS Profile at www.collegeboard.com. All updated College information is on the Career Center webpage at www.edisonchargers.com, Students, Career Center.

Edison High School’s Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) 864!!!

In May 2011, 9th, 10th, and 11th graders took the Califor-nia Standards Tests in Mathematics, English/Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. Edison High School’s Academic Performance Index (API) of 864 is out-standing. An API score of 800 is considered exemplary. Congratulations to Edison High School’s students and staff!

Edison High School’s Standardized Testing and Re-porting (STAR) 864!!!

What is the API (Academic Performance Index)? The purpose of the Academic Performance Index (API) is to measure the year-over-year growth in academic performance for California schools. The API summarizes a school's stan-dardized test results into a single number. Each school's STAR and CAHSEE results are calculated into a complex formula that assigns the school an API between 200 and 1000 (1000 being the best score). What is the CAHSEE (pronounced Kay-see)? The California High School Exit Exam is a test used to deter-mine whether students have mastered key skills before gradu-ating from high school. High school students must pass the CAHSEE in order to graduate. The CAHSEE is administered to all grade 10 students on March 13th and 14th. The test is divided into two sections: English/ Language Arts and Math. The English/Language Arts portion includes the content standards through grade 10, including vocabulary, reading, and writing strategies and conventions. In addition to answering multiple-choice questions, students write an essay on a specific topic. The Math portion covers academic content standards for grades 6, 7 and algebra I, including: statistics, data analysis and probability, number sense, measurement,

algebra and functions, math reasoning and ge-ometry. The CAHSEE is a pass/fail test, which is not timed. A score of 350 or above satisfies the state’s requirement to pass the CAHSEE for a high school diploma. Edison High School’s California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) Results. In March 2011, the Class of 2013 (current Juniors) took the California High School Exit Exam for the first time. The Exit Exam tests students’ abilities in English/Language Arts and Mathematics. Ninety-seven percent of students in the class of 2013 passed the English/Language Arts and ninety-six percent passed the Mathematics portion on the first attempt! Congratulations to the class of 2013 for these out-standing passing percentages. What is the STAR test? Each spring California students in grades 2 through 11 take a series of tests through the Standardized Testing and Report-ing program, more commonly known as STAR. First admin-istered in 1998, the STAR program requires all public schools in California to test students between mid-March and mid-June of every year. The CST (California Standards Tests) are a component of the STAR. The CST’s were devel-oped to measure whether students are mastering the specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. Students with identified special learning disabilities may take a different version of California assessments known as the CAPA and CMA. These are in lieu of the STAR test.

Edison PTSA Welcomes Back Parents, Teachers, & Students

Welcome to Edison High School! Most of you have heard the acronym “PTSA” throughout your student’s educa-tional journey. Here at Edison, your PTSA is actively in-volved supporting our parents, teachers, and students. Support of the Arts through our National Reflections pro-gram, drug and alcohol awareness education through our Parent Partnership Committee, and college preparedness education through parent Programming events are just a few things you will see this year.

Knowing what is happening on campus is a key benefit to PTSA membership. Please consider joining us at our As-sociation Meetings, on Mondays this school year at 7pm in the EHS Media Center (Library) on November 14, Janu-ary 9, March 12, and May 14. We will provide valuable information about this community, how it works, & how to help students navigate through it all.

In addition to Meetings, PTSA offers special evening Events highlighting critical high school issues and topics. We kicked these off on Thursday, September 29rd in the EHS Gym with keynote speaker Don Betterton, addressing the topic of getting into college, with specific information about “Playing Sports in College-What Every Athlete

Needs to Know,” as an insider’s view of how admission committees select students.

On Saturday, October 29 join us for REAL , a gather-ing for 6th-12th grade students and parents from 9:30-12:30 at Edison High. The objective of this event is to give teens and parents concentrated information, direction, and open communication on teen topics such as dating vio-lence, substance use and technology issues, including bul-lying and predators.

We hope you will join us in all our activities and we en-courage you to become a member. With membership, you will receive valuable email communications and informa-tion, in addition to discounts with our national PTA spon-sors. Please visit our new web site either through the www.edisonchargers.com link or by going to www.edisonchargersptsa.org.

ABC Supports Edison Academics

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year! It’s hard to believe that we are already back at school and mov-ing full steam ahead. A big thank you to all of the EHS families who joined the Foundation this year. Where do your Foundation donations go? Last year, the Founda-tion was able to purchase a new, portable public address system for the school, provide funding for the student planners and provide funding for the Teen Truth Live, Drugs and Alcohol Education Program. The Foundation also partnered with the Class of 2000 to purchase a digital display monitor for the Administration building. We were also able to facilitate a donation to the EHS Science Depart-ment with a matching gift from Boeing California. All of this would not have been possible without your support. As we head into the new school year the Foundation will be working closely with the administrative team to determine how we can help support our EHS students and teachers. We would like to recognize the following organiza-tions for their support last year: Bank of America, Wells Fargo Bank, Boeing Employees Community Fund and the Automobile Club of Southern Cali-fornia. We would also like to thank John Giliam of Ransom Girl clothing and his wife Mari. Ransom Girl was a featured vendor at last year’s Holiday Treats Boutique and they donated all of their pro-ceeds from that event to the Foundation. Speaking of which, our first event of the year, our annual Holiday Treats Boutique, will be held on Saturday, December 3rd from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. If you are interested in being a vendor at this event please call Dolores White, Vice President, at 949/849-9571, or email her at [email protected]. Thank you again for supporting the Foundation and for helping the students and faculty of EHS through your generous donations. Renee Mock, President EHS Foundation

Attendance and Safety Highlights from the Edison Parent/Student Handbook (available in its entirety on www.edisonchargers.com)

Safe Students, Safe School Parking Lot Safety - All drivers should drive slowly and with cau-tion. We encourage all parents/guardians to drop off and pick up students along Magnolia Ave. Please do not drop off student in front of the Admini-stration building. This area is for loading and unloading of district busses only. Visitors during school hours should ob-tain a parking permit from the switchboard upon arrival. Do not drive or park on the service roads. Student ID Cards and Lunch Passes - Students must carry their Edison identification card during school hours and at all school related activities. It must be presented upon request. Lunch passes allow 11th/12th students to go home for lunch with parent permission. It does not permit students to buy lunch from fast food restaurants, eat lunch in their cars, loiter in the park, or visit the homes of other students. Cell Phone/Electronic Device Policy - The cell phone pol-icy prohibits the use of a cell phone in class. Students are allowed to use their phones before school, after school and during break and lunch. Please encourage them to use their phones responsibly. If they violate the cell phone policy the teacher will take the phone and turn it over to the supervision office where the parent can pick it up. The student will also receive a Saturday School as a consequence for the violation. Dress Code – No bare midriffs, excessive cleavage, strapless tops or dresses, or muscle shirts are allowed. Any clothing, which allows underwear to be exposed, is pro-hibited. The District prohibits clothing that shows or conveys messages of a sexual tone, promotes violence, drug or alco-hol use. Excessively short shorts or skirts are prohibited. A good rule of thumb is if the shorts or dress does not reach the palm of the student’s hand when their arms are down the item of clothing is too short. Hats - Only EHS co-curricular teams or plain dark green hats are permitted. All ball caps must be worn with bill facing forward. All other hats, baseball caps, or other headwear are not permitted (unless specifically required for religious or health purposes as approved by the principal). If a student violates the dress code they will be asked to change out of the inappropriate item of clothing. Attendance Matters- Learn and Succeed IN SCHOOL. Regular attendance and promptness to class are important components of a student’s academic success. Students who are frequently absent may be jeopardizing not only their immediate academic success, but also their ability to graduate on time.

With block scheduling, most classes meet just three times a week. If a student should miss one day or even a single period, it could result in significant loss of instruction for your child. Being tardy to class interrupts classroom instruction. We ask for help from all parents and guardians to encourage their child to attend every class on a daily basis and to be to school on time. Students with habitual truancies will be referred to the District Attorney’s Office and the Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) process may be utilized. Attendance Quick Reference What is the Attendance Office Phone #? (714) 962-1356 Ext. 4427 or 4428 If a student answers, please ask to speak with an adult and always take the name of the person you spoke with regarding the attendance issue. What information is needed on notes and phone calls to the attendance office? All notes and phone calls MUST include the following information: (1) full name of student; (2) student ID number; (3) date(s) of absence and period(s) missed; (4) specific reason for absence; (5) parent/guardian signature; (6) parent/guardian contact phone number. How many days after a return to school must a note or phone call be presented? A written absence note or parent/guardian phone call is re-quired within five (5) days. Any uncleared absences become TRUANT after five days. This is a District policy. We rec-ommend bringing a note to the attendance counter the day of return. The attendance office is located in the administration building and opens at 7:00 a.m. daily. What if my student must leave campus before the school day ends? If a student comes to school and must leave for any reason, he/she must check out with the Attendance Office or Health Office before leaving school. Failing to do so will result in the absence being considered a TRUANT! What happens if I fail to clear absences in a timely manner? If a student does not clear absences in a timely manner, the absence will be considered a truancy. Any all day truancy, or 5 single period truancies, will result in a Saturday School assignment. Saturday School does not clear the truancy but is a discipline measure only.
