ABOUT THE SPEAKING TEST

The speaking test is worth 25% of your total GCSE grade and if you are well prepared, it iseasy to do well in this section of the exam.

Some people worry about the speaking test but there is really no need and your teachers have put together this guide to help you. The test itself will be conducted by your own Spanish teacher and will be recorded on tape and sent to the examination board for marking.

Your teacher is an expert and will have done many speaking tests over the years. He or she knows exactly what you have to say to be successful and will work through the various sections of this guide with you. You will prepare and practise role plays and model answers for general conversation. All you will then have to do is learn the material and you will score good marks. You should try to learn your answers as soon as you have completed them. Practise reading them aloud, try recording them on tape, listening to them and then trying to improve your pronunciation further. Ask your Mum, Dad, brother or sister to help you - they don’t need to understand what you are saying, as long as they can follow your answers! Whatever method you use, keep practising regularly and you will become more confident.

It is worth remembering that the speaking test is an opportunity for you to show what you can say in Spanish. The examiner will reward what you say, not what you don’t know.

The speaking test is divided into two sections:

1. Role-play: 2 tasks2. General Conversation: 2 topics

At Foundation tier the test will last about 9 minutes and at Higher tier it will last about 12 minutes.

The Golden Rule

Say as much as you can and avoid one word answers such as sí and no. Although you will be marked on pronunciation and accuracy, communication is the main thing in the Speaking Exam. Don’t worry about making mistakes - this is your chance to show what you know. Make sure you are well-prepared in advance and have something to say on all the main topics.

Role-Play

You will have to do two role-plays according to the level at which you have been entered (either foundation or higher). In each role-play you will have to give 4 pieces of information. You will be given time to prepare for the role-plays before the exam. However, you will NOT be able to use a dictionary so it is important that you learn the following common phrases which are likely to come up in the exams.

The role-play tasks have instructions in English as well as pictures and short prompts in Spanish. For Foundation tier you will do task A and task B. For Higher tier you will do task B and task C.

For Task C type role plays, you are given a situation in English followed by a leaflet or poster in Spanish. The things you have to say are then shown by numbered bullet points underneath. There are two unexpected elements. The format is like this:

1. There is a problem with an article you bought recently in a department store in Spain. The Examiner will play the part of the shop assistant and will begin the conversation.

2. General Conversation

The general conversation is the part of the speaking test which carries most marks and this is the opportunity to ‘show off’ what you can do. Your teacher will have been given a list of topics on which to ask you questions. You will have to answer questions from two topics.

You will have a ‘free choice’ of the first conversation topic and you will let your teacher know which topic you have chosen before the Speaking Exam, but it must be one of the five topic areas. You are allowed to bring very brief notes, a spider diagram for example, into the exam. You will prepare to talk about something personal to you from the chosen topic area. Examples might be:

Whatever you do, remember that for a grade C you must give opinions and use three time frames.

In the second conversation topic, your teacher will ask you questions from another topic area chosen by the exam board. In order to score highly in the conversation, it is essential that you do more talking than your teacher. Do not give sí/no answers, but try to give as much detail as possible. Below are examples of 2 candidates. Candidate A will not score as highly as Candidate B:

Candidate A:

Candidate B:

Candidate B has given a reasonably detailed answer whereas Candidate A has given mainly one-word answers. Another advantage of giving more information is that it gives you control over what to say, rather than answering set questions set by your teacher.

Remember! To get a grade C and above you will need to include the following:
