STATUS REPORT – 11 OCT 2017

It is indeed a pleasure to present the following report on the activities of the operations of the EDENSC. Please note that this is only a synopsis and it is impossible to cover everything.

It has been a busy month for sport in the Eden and successful month of August and September in the Eden and a number of new challenges appeared on the horizon.

AMINISTRATION Although EDENSC always strive to better their administration, it is on a sound basis and the MANCO constantly strives to better service delivery to the members and improve the functionality. On request of EDENSC, the WCPSC paid over the R95 000 grants in order to support the administration and projects of the EDENSC

The rolling Date & Event Calendar for 2017 is updated on a monthly base and many more members contributed to it this year.

The EXCO have attended many AGM’s, events and functions of their members in the past two months. This is building a close relationship between EDENSC and their members.

BI-LATERALS As part of their good governance vision, the EDENSC EXCO is scheduling bi-lateral meetings with the EXCO’s of all members on a regular base. The last federations was met on 27 September 2017 [ Netball, Dominoes, Martial Arts, Hockey and Freshwater Angling]. Again the challenges within the federations were highlighted and EDENSC can vouch to that fact .

MEMBERSHIP The affiliation of EDENSC is at present 51 DSF’S and 6 LSC’s affiliations. The founding meeting of Kannaland took place in Zoar on 26 September 2017 – the last of the Eden Municipal Sport Councils to become operational. Another 3 potential new federations are one the cards [Bridge, Archery and Volleyball].

EVENTS EDENSC GOOD GOVERNANCE INDABA NMU, GEORGE, 11 AUGUST 2017 The EDENSC annually host a major capacity building project as part of their vision and mission to empower their members in matters of concern in the sporting arena in the Eden district. Last year a very successful Transformation Indaba was hosted in Tembalethu, George. This year the theme was Good Governance with specific reference to the Role of the Constitution and the influence of the King IV Report. The EDENSC formed partnerships with Millers Attorneys in George [writing material & files & the sponsorship of the keynote speaker, Prof Willie van der Westhuizen], NMU George Campus [the venue sponsor – Prof Quinton Johnson] and DCAS [the programme director and logistical support]. 34 affiliated members [110 persons] attended. The GGI was to be funded by the DCAS Condition Grant. This did not materialise as a result of no funding has yet been received at that time via the WCPSC and EDENSC had to cut on their projects as a result of their DCAS funding being cut by 59%. RESOLUTIONS taken were: 1 That the EDENSC schedule a workshop on LEADERSHIP with the focus on 1.1 a progression program to prepare persons to take over leader positions; 1.2 federations and sport councils to stick to their core business; 1.3 ethical leadership; 1.4 leadership with high moral values; 1.5 re-establishment of pride in National, Provincial & District colours and emblems. 2 That EDENSC develop programmes and present it to members to directly speak to good leadership and

corporate management starting with the 2010 program on National symbols.

DCAS FUNDING & LOTTO SUPPORT WORKSHOP – ETA, GEORGE, 14 SEPTEMBER 2017 The DCAS & Lotto Funding Support Workshop hosted by EDENSC, draw 24 EDEN federations. This was welcomed by all present and assisted greatly in getting their applications ready and also to get the unanswered questions answered by the persons who worked with it – Remo Allies and his team from Cape Town. This initiative of the EDENSC seems to have become the trend in most of the other DSC’s.

EDEN GOLDEN GAMES – OUDTSHOORN, 29 AUG 2017 Die Eden Golden Games het op Dinsdag 29 Augustus op die De Jager-sportterrein in Oudtshoorn plaasgevind. Verrigtinge het begin met 'n fiksheidstoets. Dave van der Walt [EDENSC] het die visie vir sport uitgespel waarna die EDEN DM burgermeester, Memory Booysen, die spele amptelik open. Sal sal egter vanjaar nie ‘n WK-spna aan die nasionale spele deelneem – hoofsaaklik agv finansies. Die sportprogram het bestaan uit stap, rugbybal gooi, jukskei en doelskoppe, 800 m-baanitem, Eendstap, Dress up-resies; 100 m-baanitem; Bal gooi en skop; Bal-aflos; Pegging washing pegs; Ring the stick, 200 m-baanitem; 400 m-baanitem, Passing the ball en 4x100 m aflos.

EDEN BETTER TOGETHER GAMES – MOSSEL BAY, 22 SEPTEMBER 2017 The annual BTG 2017 formed part of the Mossel Bay Sport Festival this year. About 2500 participant and supporters from a number of government departments in Eden, enjoy the day taking part in sport codes like athletics, tug-o-war, cycling, golf, darts, dominoes, pool, volleyball, mini soccer, touch rugby, netball. The event was opened by the mayor of Mossel Bay, alderman Harry Leventhal, and Dr Lyndon Bouah, Chief Director of DCAS.

DCAS WC SCHOOL SPORT WORKSHOP – BOSCHENMEER, PAARL, 15/16 SEPTEMBER 2017 This important workshop was held at Boschenmeer Golf Estate, Paarl and EDENSC was represented by Dave van der Walt, Pat Witbooi & Edith Josephs. It was an open agenda – many points were discussed. Paul Hendricks reiterated the NSRP and the structures to be adopted and instituted in the WC and he did not allow old systems to take over workshop. It was however a pity that so few educator-sport persons attended. Some of the major points of discussion were: DCAS

Communication is main tool to success – not done

Operational structures for school sport essential

Many school codes not familiar with their DSF’s – personality clashes;

DSF’s not informed on school sport activities – Dave explained EDENSC SS structure

The OLD/NEW school sport structures – still no synergy

High cost of non- School Games [like Cravenweek, etc]

To eliminate hijackers of structures

SASCOC to get NF’s in line with NSRP – demarcation;

Persons mandated to address this – do they really do it?

Democratic processes to be followed at all times

Intimidation of principals, school, parents, etc to be addressed;

DSF’s and school sport codes not aligned

Maybe a more activist mentality needed

Some school sport codes become to powerful!

VIP syndrome in school sport – just there for the perks

Arbitration tool not used enough

Fight anti-bodies from inside – not to start new bodies

WC Feds & Codes – not to take over – to lead, monitor and guide

EDENSC provided serious inputs

Very little teachers present

Eden’s point of view that district code representatives rather be invited received positive

4 main resolutions taken – all documents and presentations to be forwarded within 14 days WCED

Dennis Pillay explained the current position of WCED on school sport – not good. Is the only province NOT to have a sport budget

No coherent policy on school sport - only draft for many years!

Many schools don’t take ownership of facilities – neglected;

New schools built without sport facilities

Rewards & incentives to teachers involved in school sport;

Re-drafting of MOU between SRSA & DBE on the cards The SA SCHOOL NATIONAL SUMMER GAMES [10-14 Dec 2017] will be hosted in the WC [Cape Town]. Federations to be involved as well [officials & technical persons], all district teams to be signed off by DSC’s [EDENSC] – before be accepted as part of WC Team. Verification will take place in districts – EDEN 28 Oct in George [George High School].

WC SPORT AWARDS – CENTUARY CITY, 16 SEPTEMBER 2017 Op Saterdag 16 September 2017 het die Weskaapse Departement van Kultuursake & Sport in samewerking met die WCPSC, die luisterryke Sporttoekenningsfunksie by die Centuary City Konferensiesentrum in Kaapstad aangebied. Die finaliste van al 6 die distrikte in die Weskaap se wenners was die finaliste en uit die 24 kategorië loop EDEN weg met nie minder nie as 6 wenners nie! Slegs die Kaapstad distrik kon meer wenners oplewer! Dit wys weer eens kwaliteit van die sportgemeenskap waarmee in die Eden distrik!

EDEN Fietsry [met Corné Bence as voorsitter] word aangewys as die WK Federasie van die Jaar en in die proses klop hulle selfs die WP Rugby-unie!

Christo Vermaak van GroupEditors [Oudtshoorn Courant] word as die WK Sportjoernalis van die Jaar aangewys;

Gerhard Jooste met sy pragtige aksiefoto van Equestrian word aangewys as die WK Sport-fotograaf van die Jaar;

Die Christelike Jeugforum van Oudtshoorn onder die leiding van Phillip Seroux word aangewys as die WK Reakrasieliggaam van die Jaar;

Die EDEN Inheemse Spelespan Kgati onder kapteinskap van Simphiwe Rayidi word aangewys as die WK Inheemse Span van die Jaar;

Heidedal Primêre Skool se landloopspan word aangewys as die WK Ontwikkelings Skoolsport-span van die Jaar!

Hierdie wenners word nou saam met die ander 8 provinsies se wenners genomineer vir die SA Sporttoeken-ningsfunksie in November waarna die finaliste aangewys gaan word. EDEN Sportraad wens nie net al die wenners geluk nie, maar ook aan al die ander finaliste – julle was wenners in eie reg! Sterkte aan al die wenners met die pad vorentoe!

WC DEVELOPMENT NETBALL TOURNAMENT – OUDTSHOORN, 26 aug 2017 Eden Netball Federation hosted the 2017 WC Development Tournament which took place In OUDTSHOORN on 25/26 August 2017. Teams from Cape Winelands, Cape Town Metro, Overberg, West Coast, Central Karoo and Eden, competed in this annual event. A Gala Function on the Friday evening of 25 August 2017 was hosted by Eden Netball Federation in Oudtshoorn. Eden Netball performed very well by winning the A section and also had a number of players amongst the top 10!

GEORGE SHOW DEVELOPMENT SPORT FESTIVAL – GEORGE, 24-26 AUG 2017 The George Agricultural Show, EDENSC & DCAS forms a partnership in hosting the Sport Development section of the show. This is a huge success and DCAS supports this event with Legacy Funding to the partaking sport federations. This year cycling, tug-o-war, bodybuilding, sport for disabled, dominoes, powerlifting, golf, equestrian & hunting rifle shooting, formed part. The National T-o-W Team of Zimbabwe also competed!

MOSSEL BAY SPORT & RECREATION FESTIVAL – MOSSEL BAY, 22 SEPT – 7 OCT. The Mossel Bay Municipality in partnership with EDENSC and DCAS, hosted the 6th MBSF again. The BTG also formed part of the programme this year. No less than 39 sport codes were on display and it ended with the Kwêla Town of the Year celebrations.

KANNALAND MUNICIPAL SPORT COUNCIL FOUNDED – ZOAR, 26 SEPTEMBER 2017 On 26 September 2017 the long awaited founding of the Kannaland Municipal Sport Council became a reality when Jan Tieties was elected as the first chairperson. This was the 7th and last municipal sport council to be founded in Zoar under the umbrella of the EDENSC! Now all seven municipalities in the Eden District are members of EDENSC! A remarkable achievement!

TIMBERCITY CYCLING RACE – OUDTSHOORN, 1 OCTOBER 2017 EDEN Cycling in partnership with TIMBERCITY Oudtshoorn, hosted the 2017 TIMBERCITY CYCLING SEEDING EVENT on Sunday 1 Oct 2017 in Baron van Reede Road, Oudtshoorn. More than 500 cyclist entered and the winners was two of South Africa’s top Proteas cyclists, Louis Visser and Anriette Schoeman! This race is one of the seeding events for the Cape Town Cycling Race.

EDEN HUNTING RIFLE OPEN COMPETITION – LOUVAIN, 30 SEPTEMBER 2017 EDEN Hunting Rifle Shooting hosted their Open Championships with entries from all over South Africa – NW, FS, BOL & WP – and even 3 from the USA! More than 130 persons participated on a windy day and we’re proud to report that the Open, the Ladies and the Junior team sections were won by Eden! Renier van

Greunen [EDEN] won the gold in the Open, Marize Volschenk [WP] won the Ladies section and Danie Obermeyer [BOL} won the junior section! Well done Eden!

SC JUNIOR GOLF TOP IN HEPTANGULAR TOURNAMENT – KINGSWOOD, 2/3 OCT 2017 The SC Golf Federation in partnership with DCAS hosted this major event at the beautiful Kingswood Golf Estate. The U/18A & B Teams of SC, WP, NC, FS, EP and Border competed over two days and SC came out on tops in both the sections – in the A section beating WP into second place and in the B section beating NC! As Tannah Harris [President of SC Golf] mentioned – this is development in action!

WC OLYMPIC DAY – DARLING, 7 OCTOBER 2017 The 5th WC Olympic Day celebrations were hosted by West Coast SC [on behalf of WCPSC] in partnership with DCAS. The initial date was postponed 3 times and eventually was set for 7 October in Darling where it started two hours late. Disappointing however was the poor turnout of not only schools, but also WCPSC EXCO members, other DSC EXCO members and the public.
