september/october 2007 • 13 www.nsbe.org F amily, a very entertaining movie came out this year entitled “300.” The movie is a fictional- ized retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae, in which King Leonidas of Sparta and his small unit of 300 warrior soldiers and volunteers fought to the last man against the Persian King Xerxes and his army of more than one million soldiers, for three days. In one of history’s most famous last stands, the performance of the 300 against overwhelming odds serves as a monumental symbol of courage under fire even to this day, a testament of the power of a few to persevere. It also speaks to the ability of a few well-trained and committed soldiers to fight effectively against a seem- ingly insurmountable force or obstacle. Well, allow Brother E.D. to come from 480 B.C. to July 9, 2007, a date that shall live in the annals of NSBE history forever. For it was on that day that 70 NSBE war- riors, two World Headquarters staff members and a handful of volunteers stood face-to-face against seemingly overwhelming odds, the daunting odds that are claiming our children every day at an alarming rate on the battlefield of education. The 70’s ef- forts shall forever be remembered by all of us as a manifestation of the lightening bolts of our beloved Society, the symbol of the striking impact we should make on society. Like King Leonidas, General Franklin Moore led the NSBE army into battle for three weeks. Moore’s and the 70’s mission was to SEEK to educate 250 third through fifth grade children in the “taboo” areas of science, technology, engineering and math. That’s “SEEK,” as in NSBE Summer Engineering Experience for Kids Camp. Having traveled from as far away as California, the 70 had three days to master the curriculum. Prepared for battle, they, along with NSBE’s allies — the Society of Automotive Engi- neers (SAE), Battelle, Caterpillar and Friendship Public Charter Public School — made their stand. After three exciting, tearful, pride-filled weeks, the efforts of the 70 were described by Ray Morris and Matt Miller of SAE in the following manner: “Brother E.D., SAE has administered its ‘A World in Motion’ curriculum to an estimated 3.75 million children. However, we have never witnessed the level of dedica- tion demonstrated by ‘the 70’ at the SEEK Camp. Furthermore, we have never held an engineering camp for three weeks. Three days to a week was our best effort prior to this. Finally, never have this many black children attended one of our camps for this long!” Some historians have cited the efforts of the 300 as having helped give birth to Western democracy. With my chest fully inflated, Brother E.D. proudly proclaims, “The 70 have given birth to a new era in the history of NSBE, one in which the true NSBE member not only recites the mission statement but, more important, follows the example of the 70…and LIVES IT! Family, a very entertaining movie came out this year entitled “300.” The movie is a fictional-ized retelling of the Battle of

Well, allow Brother E.D. to come from 480 B.C. to July 9, 2007, a date that shall live in the annals of NSBE history forever.
