LET’S CONNECT Thank you.....thank you to everyone for an outstanding 2017-2018. This has been a great school year with successes abounding due to the hard work of our educators, staff, and stu- dents as well as those who support us and volunteer. ECPPS realizes success each and every day and our students and staff are doing great work. It is the time of year for state testing and it is stressful for students, parents and staff. Please remember ....while we want to show growth and proficiency on these annual tests, moreover, our focus is to ensure we are meeting the individual needs of each child we serve. We congratulate our seniors on a job well done and look forward to turning those tassels on June 8th and June 9th as we celebrate our graduates. Some of our graduates are scholars, some athletes, some artists, some musi- cians, some mechanics, some nurses, some preparing for the military....so many directions they will be going. We wish them well and we sincerely hope they will remember their edu- cational foundations here in ECPPS and will stay in touch with us to let us know where their journey takes them. ~ Larry W. Virginia “Davis” Robertson and Emma Teachey of Northeastern High School are among the rising high school seniors state- wide, selected to attend the five-week summer program for academically or intellectually gifted students. Davis is the daughter of Bracey and Kim Robertson. Emma is the daughter of Danny Teachey and Nicole Giannakopoulos. Students selected for Governor’s School were nominated in one of 10 curriculum areas. Robertson was nominated in Natural Science and Teachey in math. The Governor's School cur- riculum focuses on the exploration of the most recent ideas and concepts in each discipline, and does not involve credit, tests or grades. The 2018 session begins on June 17th and will conclude on July 25th. The two students selected to attend this year feel that Governor’s School will give them an oppor- tunity to grow and learn from students with different thoughts and perspectives. Robertson has spoken with other students from ECPPS who have participated in Governor’s School and they reflect fondly of the friendships developed dur- ing the experience. She is looking forward to the opportunity to make those connections with students across the state. Teachey credited her interest in Governor’s School to Maggie Small, one of the 2015 Governor’s School participants from ECPPS. Maggie’s experience at Governor’s School influenced Teachey greatly and sparked her desire to apply. Robertson and Teachey are friends and applied in hopes of being able to attend together; however, Robertson will attend Governor’s School East at Meredith College in Raleigh and Teachey will attend Governor’s School West at Salem College in Winston-Salem. When asked what the students would like to share about their opportunity to be a part of the Governor’s School experience, Robertson stated, "I am extremely honored and proud to have been nominated and selected for the North Carolina Governor's School. This has been a goal of mine for quite some time and I am looking forward to gaining new knowledge, learning college skills, and meeting new lifelong friends this summer." Teachey expressed, “To me, Governor's School means more than just a great academic opportunity. It is a way for me to grow outside of my comfort zone and expand my horizons. I hope to learn a lot more than just my discipline, I hope to learn necessary life skills that will help me throughout my future academic career.” www.ecpps.k12.nc.us ECPPS NEWS~INFO~PHOTOS Students Receive OSHA Certification Students in the construction technology class at Pasquotank High School recently completed a course through Career Safe to become OSHA certified. ECPPS Seniors Visit Elementary SchoolsPre-K Students Build Solar Powered CarsPre-K students at Sheep-Harney Elementary gained an understanding of alternate power sources this year, solar power. Students constructed and tested the use of solar power by building solar cars.

Jason Smith, a parent volunteer, helped the students with this project, along with teachers, Mandy Fisher and Tammy Rhea. The students were very excited to build and test their cars.

Weeksville Elementary School cheerleaders won first place in the ECPPS Elementary Cheerleading Competition held at Northeastern High School on April 21st

Seniors from the high schools have completed their annual tour visiting elementary students in the dis-trict. The seniors visit and talk with the elementary students, giving them a glimpse into their future and what to look forward to as they grow, learn and prepare for high school graduation.

The elementary students are always so excited for the seniors to visit them, donned in their caps and gowns. The students cheer and celebrate the mile-stone of graduation with the seniors.

Northside Students Visit CIM Lab at NHSNorthside students had the awesome opportunity to visit Northeastern High School’s Computer Integrated Manufacturing lab. This lab is part of the Project Lead The Way program at Northeastern. Mr. Tony Johnson and his students organized six stations to provide a hands-on learning experience for the students. The six stations included:• Sketching-Glass Box Theory• Reverse Engineering - Using AutoMoBlox• 3-D Modeling - Autodesk Inventor• Intelitek CNC Milling• Intelitek ScorBot-4u Robotic Arm• Vex Robotics - Claw BotsThe high school students modeled and provided instruction for the elementary students in each of the areas and then allowed them the opportunity to work in each of the stations. This experience for the elementary students provided them the opportunity to take a glimpse into careers related to engineering, robotics, coding, and many others. This amazing collaboration provided an unforget-table experience for the students.

ECPPS Celebrates 2018-19 Teachers of the Year

2018-2019 ECPPS TEACHERS OF THE YEAR: (BACK L-R) HEATHER MEADS (NORTHSIDE), JILL TURNER (P.W. MOORE), JOHN LEE (PCHS), SAMUEL STALLINGS (HL TRIGG), KAREN KIDD (CENTRAL), MARYANN EVERETT (PASQUOTANK), SABRINA SEARS (J.C. SAWYER), SHELBY HUGHES (ECMS), LIZ WOOTEN (ECP EARLY COLLEGE), NOVILLA TURNER (RRMS) (FRONT L-R) SANDY JAMES (NHS), DAWN STALLINGS (SHEEP-HARNEY), MARIE AVAREZ (WEEKSVILLE) Singing Valentines Present Check to ECPPS

Music teachers in ECPPS will benefit once again from The Albemarle Sounds Singing Valentine program. Mr. Jack Parker, a representative for The Albemarle Sounds, presented checks this week to Tammy W. Sawyer, ECPPS Director of Community Schools, to be distributed to each music teacher in the district. The checks vary from year to year depending on how many requests they have for a singing valentine.

According to Mr. Parker, this program has allowed them to donate over $25,000 to school music programs since the program started.

ECMS was selected by the NC Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) as a host for a tech-nology professional develop-ment opportunity for the region. Educators from Northeastern North Carolina were invited to participate in the training.

ECMS was one of the first schools in ECPPS to experience the 1:1 Chromebook Classroom. They received a $200,000 grant from Golden LEAF in April 2016 to support 1:1 digital learning at their school for grades 6-8. While ECPPS was in the process of phas-ing in 1:1 throughout the district, ECMS was able to provide it for all of their students beginning with the 2016-2017 school year.

ECMS has been on the forefront of utilizing technology to pro-vide students with a more per-sonalized learning experience. Teachers are continually learn-ing new technology and prac-tices to engage students which is also made possible through the Golden LEAF grant. The profes-sional development provided for staff creates classrooms where instruction is designed around innovative and blended learning.

The ECMS Digital Classroom Expedition took place on April 18th with approximately 20 in attendance. ECMS showcased teacher and student use of instructional strategies using digital tools and breakout ses-sions. This opportunity was part of the NC Digital Learning Initiative through NCDPI and the NCSU Friday Institute.

Mr. Jack Parker presents checks to Tammy W. Sawyer to be distributed to the ECPPS music teachers.

ECPPS participated in the 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year Event, hosted by the Elizabeth City Chamber of Commerce, on May 2nd. Each school’s Teacher of the Year was recognized and presented an award and Mrs. Marie Alvarez was named the District Teacher of the Year for ECPPS. Mrs. Alvarez is the art teacher at Weeksville Elementary and has worked with ECPPS since August 2007. The finalists for the district honor included: John Lee, art teacher at Pasquotank County High School, Liz Wooten, math/science teacher at ECP Early College and Marie Alvarez.

ECPPS also held a celebration for the Teachers of the Year at Montero’s on May 2nd, immediately follow-ing the Chamber of Commerce event. The ECPPS celebration was sponsored by Biggs Cadillac Buick GMC and the ECPPS Education Foundation.

Northside student, Linnyah Bennett, uses the Intelitek ScorBot-4u Robotic Arm as NHS student, Bryce Scott provides instruction.
