The stages

Stage 1 – Introduction (3-5 min.)

Stage 2 – Explaining and Recommending (5 to 7 min.)

Stage 3 – Consensus Reaching (5-7 min.)

Stage 4 – Presenting and Convicing (5 to 7 min.)

Stage 5 – Justifying and Defending (5 to 7 min.)

Candidates should be prepared to:

Ask and answer questions interacting naturally

Explain points using logical assumptions

Discuss a topic – Elaborate on certain points – Sustain talk - Initiate -Compare and contrast

Present and justify a decision

Procedure before the beginning of the test

Candidates report to the registration desk

Candidates are assigned test partners and testing rooms

Candidates are given a registration form,the examiner's note-taking formsand their own note-taking forms

Examiner 1 welcomes candidates to the testing room

Examiner 1 checks personal information

Stage 1

Introduction

Stage 1 – The purpose

A discussion between Examiner 1 and the two candidates

A discussion based on candidates' personal information (not sensitiveinformation)

Candidates introduce themeselves talking about school/studies/work and personal interests

This stage (in contrast to the ECCE warm-up stage) is scored

Stage 1 – Test-taking tips

Candidates should

maintain eye contact with the examiner

answer the examiner's questions not using single-word responses

Interact in a natural way without hesitations

Explaining and recommending

Stage 2 marks the beginning of the role-play

The stage essesses the candidates' ability to explain and listen for information

Communication between the candidates should be informal

Stage 2 – The procedure

Examiner 1 provides the context of the role play

Candidates are given the Speaking prompts and they are not allowed to look at eachother's information sheet

Candidates get 2 minutes to familiarize themselves with the prompts

Examiner 1 asks candidates wether they have any questions and if not the stage begins

Once the stage begins the examiner turns to the side to indicate non-particiration in the interaction

Candidates should:

avoid reading the list of features exactly as it appears on the prompt

explain the information they are given to their partner using logicalassumptions in a natural manner and using own language as far aspossible

produce a smooth presentation using appropriate informal transitions

explain only the available information without fabricating

Η μάθηση είναι χαρά, είναι μια θετική και δημιουργική διαδικασία που ξεκινά από τα πρώτα δευτερόλεπτα της ζωής. Είναι μια σειρά από ατελείωτα “γιατί” που πρέπει όλα να απαντηθούν με τον κατάλληλο τρόπο.

Η εκμάθηση ξένων γλωσσών είναι μια πολύ σοβαρή υπόθεση για την ομαλή ανάπτυξη και εξέλιξη του ανθρώπου που όμως επιτυγχάνεται μόνο με πολλά χαμόγελα, αγάπη, επιβράβευση, ομαδική προσπάθεια και μέθοδο.

Taking turns and providing feedback

The goal is to come to an agreement on 1 of the options

The objective is to maintain natural interaction comparing and contrastinginformation

Communication between the candidates should be informal

Candidates should

remember that this is a conversation and not a debate

compare and contrast the points discussing advantages and disadvantages

give feedback to their fellow candidates before moving to another point

remember they and their fellow candidate are members of the same team

make sure they spend at least 5 minutes discussing (pure talking time)

If the conversation comes up to 6 minutes the examiner will give a 1-minute warning

Before Stages 4 and 5

Preparing the presentation and prοbable responses

Procedure before the beginning of Stages4&5

Examiner 1 gives 2-3 minutes to candidates to prepare their presentation

During that time candidates should:

Select from the prompt 2 points each to present

Exchange ideas on how to make their point more convincing

Prepare a response for the negative point in case they are asked in Stage5

While candidates are only required to talk to each other in English

Examiner 1 introduces Examiner 2 as part of the role play and Stage 4 begins

Presenting and convincing

The goal is to present the selected option to a figure of authority who isgoing to make the final decision

The objective is to present the points convincingly

There should be a marked shift to more formal communication

Candidates should:

Use more formal language than the language they used in the previous stages

Justify their choice elaborating on the points they are presenting

Avoid general references or repetitions from previous stages

Try to be as persuasive as possible

Use a formal presentation format

Stage 5

Justifying and Defending

The goal is to justify in more detail the points presented in Stage 4

The objective is to show the ability to elaborate convincingly and expandon a given point of discussion

Formal communication should be maintained

Stage 5 – The procedure

Examiner 2 asks challenge questions only on the points presented by the two candidates

The 'challenge questions' are usually expressions of concern

The examiner will ask a balanced number of questions to the two candidates

The examiner may ask a question on the negative point

Candidates should: use language that addresses their interlocutor's concerns ('no reason to

worry'/'I can understand your concern but...'/you should not be concerned with...'etc.)

use language that shows conviction and determination ('we are certain that.../'we are confident'etc)

remember that overall quality of language is assessed and not ideas or creativity

remember that they do not have to come up with new information when responding to challenge questions; they can elaborate and expand on the points presented in Stage 4
