Sustainable tourism is the concept of visiting a place as a tourist and trying to make only a positive impact on the environment, society and economy. A key aspect is respect for the people who call the location home, the culture and customs of the area, and the socio-economic system. Within this context, the ECOSmart solution aims to take an innovative approach in the perception of sustainable tourist destinations. So far tourist options in protected areas are based on segmented offer and therefore fragmented information systems: ecotourism, nature tourism, active travel, hiking, etc. But what would happens if users can preview the entire universe of resources, attractions, and activities to define their own unique experience and establish their commitment with the destination? The ECOSmart platform offers a new possibility: to support responsible and sustainable tourism based on knowledge, thanks to the new possibilities of ICT. ECOSmart proposes a new paradigm which is to promote smart tourism, involving all stakeholders within the destination, including tourists themselves.
