IntroductionThe objective of the Faculty of Economical and Management Sciences is to train students to develop into professional persons and business leaders who can add value to the South African and global economy by means of their expertise, innovation and enterprise mind-set.

Objective of the programThe program focuses on the training of marketers in the corporate world as well as in medium to small enterprises. The main elements of marketing include logistics management, marketing plan, price decisions, consumer decisions, financial management, trademark decisions, marketing communication and product development.

Entrepreneurship and Business Management(Program code for application form: 500142: E350P)

Objective of the programThe program is aimed at the development of management knowledge and skills in order to effectively be promoted to a managerial post and also to become an entrepreneur.

Students will learn how to draw up a business plan by integrating important concepts from Business Management and Economics.

Admission to postgraduate studyCompletion of the program grants admission to honors studies in Tourism Management or Entrepreneurship and Marketing or

Communication Studies. The honors degree in Communication Studies that follows this degree is known as Honors BA Communication Studies (admission subject to selection).

Financial Accountancy(Program code for application form: 500156: E372P)

Objective of the programThis program focuses on the training of financial accountants and is especially aimed at the acquisition of membership from the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA). Membership of SAIPA enables the member to become a professional practising accountant working in his/her own practice or to work as a professional accountant in the trade and industry.

Admission requirements• University entrance;• A minimum APS-score of 28;• Mathematics level 4 (50%-59%); and• A selection test may be given.• Students who did not have Accounting as school subject must

successfully complete the Basic Accounting short course at the beginning of their studies at the Potchefstroom campus. Should the student not pass the course with a minimum mark of 60%, he/she must register for ACCS111 (Special Accounting) before he/she can take ACCF111. This implies that the student’s studies will be prolonged with one year.

Commercial Law and Auditing as the most important supportive subjects.

Career possibilitiesThe qualified SAIPA accountant can practise as a professional accountant who renders the following services: complete bookkeeping, secretarial, taxation and accounting services. SAIPAs can also work in the trade and industry as accountants,

internal auditors, management accountants or financial managers.

SAIPA is a member of IFAC (International Federation of Accountants) and has various collaboration agreements with professional corporations abroad that can open doors for international opportunities for the South African SAIPA.

Manner of presentation and duration of the programThe BCom Financial Accountancy program is

presented full-time and covers a period of three (3) years which is followed by practical training for another three (3)

years at a registered accountant. During the practical training period the apprentice SAIPA accountant will be regularly monitored and a final professional evaluation needs to be completed at the end of the three year period.

For SAIPA members who are interested in the trade and industry, the opportunity is given to complete practical training at accredited enterprises in the trade and industry. After applicable experience of six years it is expected of the trade and industry candidate to complete the professional evaluation in order to qualify as a SAIPA member.

Admission to postgraduate studyIf certain prerequisites are met the pregraduate program grants admission to the honors degree in Financial Accountancy with Financial Accounting, Taxation and Financial Management as core subjects. On completion of the honors degree further postgraduate studies on master or doctoral level may be followed.

Management Accountancy(Program code for application form: 500158: E373P)

Objective of the programThe program focuses on the training of management accountants. Students are scientifically trained in subject fields such as Manage-ment Accounting, Financial Accounting, Financial Management, Taxation and Computer Applications that are integrated as pre-scribed by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants/CIMA) in London, England.

Admission requirements• University entrance;• A minimum APS-score of 30;• Mathematics level 5 (60%-69%);• Students who did not have Accounting as school subject must

successfully complete the Basic Accounting short course at the beginning of their studies at the Potchefstroom campus. Should the student not pass the course with a minimum mark of 65%, he/she must register for ACCS111 (Special Accounting) before he/she can take ACCF111. This implies that the student’s studies may be prolonged with one year. Should the student achieve 65% in ACCF111 at the end of the first semester, the student

may be admitted to ACCF/ACCC121 in the second semester. Should the student achieve 65% in in ACCF121 he/she can write a second exam opportunity of ACCC121 and should he/she achieve 55% in that exam, admission to second year’s CA Accounting can be granted.

Most important subjectsThe program is composed of the subjects Management Accounting, Financial Accounting, Financial Management, Taxation, Computer Applications, Auditing, Commercial Law, Business Management and Economics.

Career possibilitiesGraduandi who completed this program will be trained for a variety of careers in the financial, commercial and industrial sectors.

Exemption of a certain number of question papers at the Chartered Institute for Management Accountants is granted with regard to international and professional qualification as Chartered Management Accountant.

Manner of presentation and duration of the program The program is presented full-time and covers a period of three (3) years, followed by practical training

for another three (3) years at an suitable organisation after which registration at the professional institute (CIMA) in London can be completed if all academic prerequisites are met.

Admission to postgraduate study The program grants admission to postgraduate study in the Honors

BCom degree (Management Accountancy) and also to Honors BCom in Financial Accounting.

On completion of the honors degree further studies on masters and doctoral level may be followed. Visit the CIMA website at www.

Chartered Accountancy (Program code for application form: 500155: E371P) Educational interpreting in English

Objective of the programThe program focuses on the training of accountants to write the national exams for qualification as Chartered Accountant (CA (SA)) at the

South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA). Accounting, Management Accounting, Taxation and Auditing form the core of this program.

Admission requirements• University entrance;• Mathematics level 5 (60%-69%);• Students who did not have Accounting as school subject

must successfully complete the Basic Accounting short course at the beginning of their studies at the Potchefstroom campus. Should the student not pass the course with a minimum mark of 75%, he/she must register for ACCS111 (Special Accounting) before he/she can take ACCF111. This implies that the student’s studies may be prolonged with one year. Should the student achieve 65% in ACCF111 at the end of the first semester, the student may be admitted to ACCF/ACCC121 in the second semester. Should the student achieve 65% in in ACCF121 he/she can write a second exam opportunity of ACCC121 and should he/she achieve 55% in that exam, admission to second year’s CA Accounting can be granted.

Most important subjectsThis program contains the major subjects Accounting, Auditing, Taxation and Management Accounting, as well as supportive subjects that enable the student to meet all the critical outcomes: Accounting and Computers, Business Management, Economics, Commercial Law, Human Resource Management, Mathematics, Statistics, Communication Skills, Academic Literacy and Professional Ethics.

Career possibilitiesGraduandi who completes the program (up unto honors level) will be allowed to write the qualifying exams for becoming Chartered Accountants (CA(SA)). The title CA (SA) is presently the only one

which allows a person to practise as an independent auditor if the person is registered at the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors (IRBA).

Manner of presentation and duration of the programThe BCom CA(SA) is presented full-time and covers a period of three (3) years. For a Chartered Accountant (SA) it includes this degree with a year’s honors training thereafter. On successful completion students may write the qualifying exams of SAICA.

Apprenticeship covers a period of three (3) years should the degree be obtained and can be done at an auditors firm or accredited companies in the trade and industry. On completion of the honors degree further postgraduate studies on masters and doctoral level may be followed.

Forensic Accountancy(Program code for application form: 500181: E370P)

Objective of the programThe degree BCom Forensic Accountancy is practiced oriented and developed for prospective students who want to directly focus on and specialise in forensic accountancy after school. The objective of the program is to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills on which they can build in practice in order to become outstanding investigators of commercial crimes.

Today it is widely known that there is an increasing demand for forensic accountants in the commercial trade crime environment.

The reasons given for this increasing demand mainly includes the following:• Significant corporate scandals such as Enron, Parmalat,

Leisurenet and so forth made the corporate world once again aware of the role and responsibilities of an auditor. It is as if the traditional role of “watchdog” needs to be supplemented by that of “bloodhound”. Businesses want to primarily prevent fraud and commercial crimes, but when it occurs it needs to be handled fast and cost effective.

• Increasing fraud and corruption in the private and public sectors;• Increase in globalisation and world trade that leads to complex

company structures and transactions; and• Increase in the use as well as sophistication of technology in the

corporate world.• ICFP: The Institute for Commercial Forensic Practitioners was

founded in May 2010 to regulate forensic accountancy prerequisites

Career possibilitiesForensic accountants can be part of:• Large companies’ own internal forensic sections;• Government bodies’ divisions for the investigation of commercial

crimes;• Forensic sections of auditor firms; or• Private practice.

In essence the forensic accountant must have adequate skills in accounting, law and investigation in order to render a service that will meet the need of so-called “bloodhounds” in the financial world.

Admission requirements• University entrance;• A minimum APS-score of 36;• Mathematics level 5 (60%-69%);• Language prerequisite: Level 5 (60-69%);• Students who did not have Accounting as school subject must

successfully complete the Basic Accounting short course at the beginning of their studies at the Potchefstroom campus. Should the student not pass the course with a minimum mark of 65%, he/she must register for ACCS111 (Special Accounting) before he/she can take ACCF111. This implies that the student’s studies may be prolonged with one year.

• Applications for conditional admission will be considered; and• A selection test may be written.

• The MCom in Forensic Accountancy is presented part-time and covers a period of two (2) years. Minimum prerequisites for admission include an Honors BCom in Forensic Accountancy as well as a selection prerequisite with specific reference to, amongst others, experience in the investigation of commercial crimes. The MCom in Forensic Accountancy requires the submission of a research thesis.

Accounting and Informatics(Program code for application form: 500162: E374P)

Objective of the programThe program focuses on the training of computer experts with background knowledge of accounting and taxations. In these days of extreme technological advancement, the training of computer experts is of utmost importance.

Admission requirements• University entrance;• A minimum APS-score of 28;• Mathematics level 4 (50-59%).• Students who did not have Accounting as school subject must

successfully complete the Basic Accounting short course at the beginning of their studies at the Potchefstroom campus. Should the student not pass the course with a minimum mark of 65%, he/she must register for ACCS111 (Special Accounting) before he/she can take ACCF111. This implies that the student’s studies may be prolonged with one year.

Auditing, law subjects and a forensic subject. The forensic subject covers aspects such as investigation methodology, types of commercial crimes as well as the prevention and tracing thereof, applicable criminological and ethical expert testifying skills and other diverse aspects concerning the manipulation of financial statements.

Manner of presentation and duration of the programThe program is presented full-time on the Potchefstroom campus and covers a period of three (3) years.

Admission to postgraduate study• The BCom in Forensic Accountancy grants admission to

an honors degree for one (1) year (Honors BCom Forensic Accountancy) if certain admission requirements are met. The

Admission to postgraduate studyIf certain prerequisites are met, the pregraduate program grants admission to the honors degree in Information Systems, Accounting or Management Accounting, with Information Systems, Accounting, Taxation, Financial Management and Management Accounting as key subjects.

On completion of the honors degree further postgraduate studies on magister- or doctoral level may be followed.

Human Resource Management(Program code for application form: 500151: E361P)Educational interpreting into English

Objective of the programThe objective of the program is to train the student to investigate and handle human resource managerial, industrial economical and

industrial psychological phenomenon in the work context in order to ensure individual, group, organisation and enterprise effectiveness.

Admission requirements• University entrance;• A minimum APS-score of 24; and• Mathematics level 3 (40%-49%). Most important subjectsIndustrial Psychology, Labour Relations, Business Management (Financial Accounting [Special], Statistics, Labour Law and Economics are not major subjects).

Career possibilities• Registration as a personnel practitioner

at the South African Board for Personnel Practice (SABPP) if other practical prerequisites are met;

Industrial Psychology and Labour Relations Management(Program code for application form: 500153: E360P)

The objective of the program is to train students to be able to identify, investigate and handle labour relational, industrial psychological and psychosocial phenomenon in the work context in order to ensure individual, group and organisation effectiveness.

Professional registration: IndustrialPsychologyandLabourRelationsFirst year HRM students can register at the South African Board for People Practices in the category HRM candidate. As the student advances in studies and experience, he/she can register in higher categories. For information visit the website www.sabpp.co.za. Registration is recommended because potential employers get an immediate idea of the applicant’s potential based on the registration category.

Industrial Psychology1. On completion of the honors studies, students can apply to

write the psychometrist exam at the Health Professions Council

of South Africa (HPCSA). Should the student pass the exam, he/she can register as a psychometrist.

2. Note: Only students who continues with a masters degree in Industrial Psychology and complete it successfully may apply for the board exam of the Health Professions Council in order to register as an industrial psychologist.

Objective of the programThe objective of the program is to train students for a variety of careers in quantitative risk management in especially the financial world, but also the economical world. This is accomplished by exposure to subjects such as Economics, Risk Management, Corporate Financing, Financial Markets, Statistics, Mathematics and Accounting.

Admission requirements• University entrance;• Mathematics level 5 (60%-69%); and• A minimum APS-score of 28.• Students who did not have Accounting as school subject must

successfully complete the Basic Accounting short course at the beginning of their studies at the Potchefstroom campus. Should the student not pass the course with a minimum mark of 65%, he/she must register for ACCS111 (Special Accounting) before he/she can take ACCF111.
