What is E.Coli ?
` Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a bacterium thatcommonly lives in the intestines of people and
animals . There are many types of E.Coli . E.Coli
0157 h7 is the most common and dangerous strain (
type ) of E.Coli .

E.Coli 0157 h7
` E coli O157:H7 is a strain of EHEC. It causes colitis
and bloody diarrhea by producing a toxin called
Shiga toxin, which damages the intestines.

Where can and how can you be infected
with E. Coli ?
` Eating undercooked ground beef (the inside is pink)
` Drinking contaminated (impure) water
` Drinking unpasteurized (raw) milk

History
` Theodore von
Escherich, a German
bacteriologist,
discovered the
bacterium Escherichia
coli in 1885.
` It was first recognized
as a cause of illness
during an outbreak in1982 due to
contaminated meat.

Detection and elimination
` ³The Colitag Test is used
on water and food ( takes
about 18 to 24 Hrs . It
incorporates many tests,
namely: (1) detection of
a chemical used for gas
and acid in E. Coli , (2)
reaction with E. coli ¶s
waste to produce a red
stain, and (3) flooding thesample with chemicals,
which are then exposed to
a UV light. If they
fluoresce, E. coli is
present. ¶¶

Detection and elimination (conti«)
` ³The (LAL) test is used
for medical equipment
and injections, and
takes at least 1 hour. It
uses horseshoe crabblood, which clots when
exposed to broken
down bacteria
(endotoxins).´

Detection and elimination (conti«)
` ³The SMART -II E. coli
test takes 8 or 24
hours, in which enriched
media is flooded
with colloidal goldantibodies. If E. coli is
present, they bond, and
a gold line forms
on the test strip.´

HUS is a disease that destroys the red blood
cells.

What can E.Coli Cause conti«
Thrombotic
thrombocytopenic purpura
(TTP) is a blood disorder
that causes blood clots to
form in small bloodvessels around the body,
and leads to a low platelet
count.
Complications
- Kidney failure
- Nervous system problems
- Severe bleeding
- Stroke

T reatment
` Most people recover within 5 ± 10 days without
antibiotics .
` the replacement of fluids and electrolytes to prevent
dehydration . Infection with E. coli 0157:H7 should
be treated by a physician` Some Studies have proven that antibiotics use can
increase your chance of developing HUS
Antibiotic resistance is becoming a growing problem
` Blood transfusions and kidney dialysis people whodevelop HUS
