His diet consisted of fruit likeplantains and wild figs, but also of live mice, scorpions, andplain raw meat, which he ate with relish. He apparently didnot drink water, nor use it for bathing. William was alsoknown for catching tennis balls thrown at him from a distanceof some thirty feet with his beak.

    X was an English forester, who worked in British India andEast Africa. He became famous in the 1920s as the

    first wildlife photographer and conservationist. After returning from the war he was appointed Deputy

    Conservator of Forests with the Imperial Forestry Service inthe United Provinces of India. Owing to his experiences during

    the war, he abhored shooting and killing and blisteringlycriticised sport hunting. He preferred shooting wildlife with acamera in the Sivalik Hills and pioneered camera trapping. Inthe 1920s he developed cameras triggered by trip wires.

    Using flashlight as well, he obtained dozens of remarkablenight-time photographs, which are among the first ofwild tigers, leopards, sloth bears, dholes and other wildlife.
