What is EMAS?
The Eco-Management and Audit Scheme is a management tool for companies and other organisations to evaluate, report and improve their environmental performance.
Process involves: setting and publishing targets monitoring performance, going through an annual eco-audit conducted by a qualified agency
At IH Barcelona our targets include:
Reducing consumption of energy and water
Reducing consumption of consumables (paper)
Recycling everything than can be recycled
Controlling disposal of hazardous waste products
Making staff and students more aware
Benefits include:
Enhanced image of company - both external and internal clients
Reduced expenditure (e.g. electricity bills, paper)
Doing our bit to help save the planet
Costs
• Environmental coordinator (6-8 hrs per week)
• Other people’s time and energy
• Internal audit
• External audit
• Total approx. 8-10 k per year
