Another Step Along the Great River WalkA new section of pathway will extend the Great River Walk and provide more opportunities for more people to enjoy the beauty of the Nepean RiverThe work on River Road Emu Plains is now underway It marks the start of a proposed loop around the west and east banks of the river from Victoria Bridge to the M4 The loop will complement the already existing section of the Great River Walk which stretches from Penrithrsquos Log Cabin Hotel north to Cassola PlaceThis first stage of the loop is being built between Regatta Park and Francis Street It will be a shared path for pedestrians and cyclists and will include a handrail on the river side The Great River Walk is a walking trail which will eventually stretch the full length of the Hawkesbury-Nepean Catchment 570 kilometres from Lake Bathurst (south of Goulburn) to Broken BayldquoThe Walk is part of our celebration

of Penrith as a lsquoRiver Cityrsquo and is an ideal way for people to enjoy this wonderful natural assetrdquo Councillor Jim Aitken saidldquoThis section of river bank although

unpaved is already very popular with walkers and cyclistsrdquo Councillor Aitken said ldquoThis work will make the walk safer and encourage more people residents and tourists alike to enjoy the stunning views the Nepean River has to offerrdquoThe work is jointly funded by Council and the NSW Government under the Metropolitan Greenspace Program

Western Sydney Astronomers Opening

Nights in May

If you have ever wondered whats up there looked curiously at the stars and wanted to know more Opportunity has come knocking Throughout May the Western Sydney Amateur Astronomy Group (WSAAG) will play host to Observation Nights at the Linden Observatory The May evenings will be held on 7th and 28th May and visitors are welcome A $5 donation would be appreciated This is a great opportunity to join the group and see what they do There will be club scopes and binoculars available to use and club members happy to point you in the right direction Attendees are encouraged to arrive approximately an hour before sunset and remember to rug up For more information please email zentonnetspacenetau A full list of coming events can be found at wwwwsaagorgThe Linden Observatory was built shortly after WW2 by engineer Ken Beames who specialised in making optical equipment During WW1 he worked as a signaller served an apprenticeship afterwards and built his first telescope in 1934 During WW2 he produced rifle sights periscopes navy signalling lamps and munitions casings most of it with grinding equipment and glass he made himself In his lifetime he made at least 450 telescopes After the war he found a block of bushy land on a ridge in Linden which enabled

him to escape the light pollution of Sydney and commenced work on a full observatory The main building was complete by 1947 and the instruments gradually added after that - the main telescope was installed the following year and the observatory opened to the public in 1959In 1967 he started construction on a planetarium which was incomplete upon his death in 1989 The main 61cm telescope was completed by 1943 but not mounted for five years- the mirror in it weighs an impressive 82kg Three other telescopes share its frame and the whole assembly weighs 4 tonnes The Dome which encloses it is nearly 4

metres high and weighs 35 tonnesThe entire 40 hectare site is now Heritage listed- which protects the buildings and instruments on the premises as well as guarding it against light pollution from nearby homes Several supernovae have been discovered using the Linden Observatoryrsquos facilities To continue maintenance and development the Observatory is administered by a Trust which holds regular tours and events as fundraisers More information on the Trust can be found at wwwlindenobservatorycomau

Memorial LunchJenny Neil (nee Merchant) - a teacher at Leonay Public School from 1987 to 1991 - passed away suddenly in Adelaide on 30th March She was 49 and is survived by her husband of nearly 20 years Rod and daughters Katie 18 and Nicky 15Jenny was an inspiration to all who met her She had many challenges in her life but she faced them all with a positive approach In 2007 she lost the use of her legs and used a wheelchair or walker for mobility This didnrsquot deter her and when the opportunity to learn to fly arose she grabbed it Last November she finished a 2-week intensive flying course in Temora which she loved Jenny will be sadly missedA luncheon in memory of Jenny is being held on Saturday 14th May Anyone interested in attending please contact Bonnie on 4735 2360 for details

Artists Complete Residency at Nepean High

UK based Australian artists Cath Farr and Mark Little have recently completed a four week residency in Penrith titled iPoet Working with twelve students at Nepean High School each student created their own collection of mixed media visual poems then as part of a lsquocreative teamrsquo produced a lsquobest ofrsquo booklet titled Just ChillenDuring the residency period Cath and Mark were also busy developing their own art exhibition Farr amp Little DO NOT PANDA There is a modest installation within Do Not Panda which documents the ipoet residency and showcases the Just Chillen booklet and is on show until 12 JuneUsing photography charcoal polyester sticks and stones and an octopus strap Cath and Mark with compassion and humour take a wry look at Ancient Old and New Australia and place modern Penrith at its epicenter ipoet was the first of three artist residencies programmed for Nepean High School as part of the Arts NSW Creative Education Partnerships The second residency features contemporary visual artist Catherine OrsquoDonnell working with selected students to produce an in-situ charcoal mural inspired by the architecture of Nepean High School The aim of this residency is to give elective visual arts students sustained access and engagement with a charcoal artist of national and international reputation
