Council to Vote on Future of Historic Glenbrook Park

Whitton Park located on the north side of the highway at Glenbrook is a park that has been identified by people interested in Glenbrooks past as a place of some significance It is one of the few village greens left in the lower Blue Mountains and is unimpeded by other activitiesRecently Blue Mountains City Council has reviewed the Plan of Management (POM) for historic Whitton Park The community Working Group that has been assisting Council with the revision of the POM has considered a number of basic propositions One is leaving the park as is an open village green for a range of activities including walking kicking a ball having a picnic or throwing a frisbee Other propositions have included turning part of Whitton Park into a dog off leash area while potentially converting yet another portion into a croquet lawn

This latest proposal has reportedly angered many residents including members of the Glenbrook Chamber of Commerce and Glenbrook Historical Society This concern focuses primarily on the proposed croquet lawn because it would alter the appearance of the park as it has been for many years whilst possibly at times restrict access to a portion of the open space

The Hazelbrook Croquet Club has long been searching for a venue for their sport and will strongly argue their case to councillors at the next regular meeting of Council The debate is likely to be passionate on both sides and The Echo understands Council may be evenly divided on the issue

Whitton Park was previously considered as a venue for croquet in 2009 At that time the proposition was defeated with the councillors preferring to maintain the park as it is Now councillors will once again consider the proposal but on this occasion will have the benefit of a council report that canvasses the views of the local Working Group The Working Group consists of representatives from Girl Guides Glenbrook Chamber of Commerce Glenbrook Historical Society the croquet club and general community representatives

The Echo understands that the often united Ward Four councillors may split on the issue Blue Mountains Deputy Mayor and Ward Four councillor Mark Greenhill said ldquothis debate will be a very important one for the Glenbrook community I appreciate very much the historical significance of Whitton Park That is why I would urge people to have their say by either emailing their local councillor and putting their point of view or coming to the council

meeting to speak in or follow the debaterdquo

Garage Sale Trail Winds Into PenrithPenrith City Council is getting

behind The Garage Sale Trail which will see thousands of garage sales held all over Australia including Penrith City on 10 April

Airing of the Quilts

A display of both time patience and talent will once again be decorating the grounds of the Arms of Australia Inn Museum in Emu Plains The Caring Hearts Community Quilters will hold their annual display over the weekend of 9th and 10th April and all are welcome to come along and see this visual spectacular The Caring Hearts Quilters consist of 16 dedicated self funded ladies who since 2005 have made in the vicinity of 700 quilts After the display the quilts are sent to various charities such as Barnardos local Hospitals and some quilts this year will move north to Queensland for the flood relief effort In addition to the magnificent quilt display there will be music a sausage sizzle gift and trading stalls a raffle and Devonshire teas More information call Margaret Collier on 02 4735 2058

On Saturday March 12 the 28th Six Foot Track Marathon was held between Katoomba and Jenolan Caves The most popular race of its kind in Australia 850 hardy competitors raced the 45 kilometres of mountainous trails in less than the seven hour time limit

Chocolate Dangers at Easter TimeWe all know Easter is a fun time spent with family and

chocolatelots and lots of delicious chocolate Easter is a great time for the human members of the family but the infamous Easter Egg hunt can end in tragedy for our four legged friends Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine which when ingested by a dog or cat causes vomiting diarrhoea hyperactivity increased heart rate restlessness muscle twitching increased urination excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal For example if a 10kg dog eats 100gm of milk chocolate vomiting and diarrhea will occur If a 10kg dog eats 250gm of milk chocolate there is a risk of potential death if untreated Dark chocolate contains more theobromine and caffeine and 100gm can be fatal

If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local veterinarian The veterinarian will give an injection to make your pet vomit which removes most of the toxins from the body Sometimes your pet will be hospitalised where intravenous fluids may be used an enema or stomach pump may be required and we may also need to use muscles relaxants and activated charcoal There are a few simple precautions you can take to ensure that your pet has a safe Easter

National Parks NewsAutumn is a great time for a bushwalk but first make sure you are well prepared someone knows where you are going and let them know when you get back

A popular bush-walkand a great introduction to the diversity of flowering plants in the mountains Florabella Pass walking track begins at the end of Florabella Street Warrimoo (Cross the highway from Warrimoo station and find The Boulevarde turn right onto Arthur Street then left onto Florabella Street)

There is usually something flowering along this track hence its name You can download track notes view a gallery of photos and download a map from wwwwildwalkscom (and start the walk from Blaxland if you like)

The track ends at Ross Crescent Blaxland not far from the railway station and takes a leisurely 3 hours to walk (one way) Please watch your children carefully as the track crosses

the valleys of Turtle Florabella and Glenbrook Creeks

Follow the track through a series of steps and descend into the rainforest surrounding Turtle Creek A short diversion to ldquoTurtle Rockrdquo (why the creek is so named) is worthwhile Return to the main track and continue for about 200 metres downstream cross Turtle Creek and the track will then start to climb up again Follow the zig-zag track up and down the hillside The track crosses the creek again On the way to the next creek crossing a feature known as ldquoHole in the Rockrdquo is just that and the creek flows past it into the ldquoWashpoolrdquo

The names given to these places have been recorded by Tom Fletcher whilst he was employed as a Council Ranger At the time that Tom worked here two other exits to the track were available both are now closed due to expanding suburbia

You will be a little more than halfway along when you come to a large rock overlooking Glenbrook Creek From here continue on the main track as it now descends to Florabella Creek and after crossing the creek again follow the main track uphill Soon

walkers will come to the intersection of the track to Glenbrook Creek This track to Glenbrook Creek is quite steep and you will have to return back up it to get back Add a half an hour for this side track to the creek

After the intersection the Florabella Pass track continues uphill to Ross Crescent Blaxland Another route called Pipparsquos Pass ends at the Blaxland Library Carpark

Stamp collecting free books and collector cards encourage an

early interest in Australian History

This week I came across my old stamp album I received it for my fifth birthday from my parents and brother It was the Globe Stamp Album and on the cover it claims it could hold approximately 4000 stamps The first page is devoted to Australian stamps My father was an avid stamp collector and soon set me up with the start of my collection

I learnt how to attach a glued hinge to my stamps and position them carefully on the page I grouped my mint and used stamps I could use tweezes to handle the stamps so as not to damage them As I grew older I was allowed to look in the Stanley Gibson catalogues my father had These cumbersome reference books made me feel very important In them I found pictures of my stamps their date of issue what variety of colours they came in and their catalogue value My stamp collecting taught me the names of exotic places around the world Zanzibar was a favourite which rolled off my tongue so effortlessly I liked the pretty coloured stamps from Hungary but soon discovered that they had little value Lessons were being learnt at a young age about ldquonot judging books by their coversrdquo

Sometimes the most uninteresting of stamps seemed to possess immense value My father had some of these Any stamps discarded by father or brother because they were damaged were given to me I called these my tornies The word philately breezed into my vocabulary My Australian stamps drew my attention to Australiarsquos history For example my father gave me an old one and a half penny red of explorer Charles Sturt issued in 1930 I had a two penny red of Governor Phillip landing at Sydney Cove issued in 1937 In my collection were three in the Sir Thomas Mitchell series issued in 1946

Considering the immense distances covered by Mitchell in his role as Surveyor General I do not think he had ever spent as long in one place as he did in my little stamp album From a five penny red the determined explorer John McDouall Stuart who met with success on his third attempt to cross Australia from South to North looked at me with a fixed stern gaze as if I had done something terrible to him I was going to say he looked a bit unhinged but I am sure he wasnrsquot for I had already seen to that In 1963 I received in the mail one of my very favourite first day covers celebrating the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the Blue Mountains crossing It was usually my mother who would address envelopes to my brother and me and send them

Sometimes they were specially printed ones for the occasion They would bear the new stamp post marked on its first day of issue It was most exciting to receive these first day covers celebrating events drawn from Australiaiacutes past From an early age stamp collecting nurtured my interest in my countryiacutes history I will always be grateful to my parents for that

The Aboriginal people the early settlers the explorers the statesmen the soldiers the royal family ntilde they were all there and more Even though I am now a bit of a ldquohot and coldrdquo collector I still value my stamp collection and enjoy perusing it When I was a school boy the Bank of New South Wales (now Westpac) used to give school children a booklet entitled ldquoSixteen Explorers of Australiaicirc for free It was published in 1956 The first edition which came out in 1951 was originally called igraveFourteen Explorers of Australia The booklet contained black lined portraits of each colonial explorer a brief account of their achievements and a map of their journeys

I have never igravebanked Westpacicirc but I am grateful that someone in their ranks had the notion to produce this useful little book In its pages I learnt of the tragic exploits of Robert OiacuteHara Burke and William John Wills and also that of Ludwig Leichhardt Another useful little book that contained a wealth of information about Australian history was igraveDiscoveryicirc From memory it was sent to you freely on request by Cotteeiacutes makers of jams conserves and soft drinks Back then the companyiacutes name was proudly preceded by the words the Australian Company of Cotteersquos Nowadays this company is part of Cadbury Schweppes a foreign owned public company ntilde the times they are a-changing

In my day when your parents bought your new school short pants and shirt you could be pretty sure they had the Staminaicirc brand on them We used to get attired in our new Stamina clothing at Crows Nest A packet of ldquoAustralian Men of Staminardquo would be found inside the pocket Apparently these card sets began being issued in the mid 1940s Faces from our countrys past stared at you as you eagerly opened and began flicking through the packet Where the Women of Stamina were hiding is

anyones guess No indigenous people of Stamina were there either Not that these considerations even entered our young minds in those days But there were exceptions that did As far as I can remember these cards never considered Burke and Willls or Leichhardt to be ldquoMen of Staminardquo Perhaps their stories were too sad or someone deemed them unfitting a certain stereotype of the day

It is a mystery to me For one thing their stories helped shape my understanding of the unforgiving nature and vastness of this continent In 1958 the collector card Australian

Historical Series issued by Atlantic petrol stations welcomed them into the fold These cards were attractive watercolour paintings by the artist Rhys Williams with information on the back It is interesting to note that it was not until 1983 that Leichhardt was given his own postage stamp Burke and Wills also shared their first stamp that same year

As an impressionable youngster growing up in the 1950s I look back on my stamps booklets and cards with fondness and gratitude They led me down a path of interest off which I have fortunately never stepped
