Infiniti is under no illusionthat to be a credible luxurybrand it has to be successfulin the UK, hence thecompany’s ambitious target.

The route to racking up thebig numbers has beenmeticulously planned, thefirst major move being thebrand awareness campaignthat resulted in them signinga big bucks sponsorship dealwith Red Bull Racing.

The contract, which beganin March, has just beenextended for 2012 whenenhanced logos will appear onthe side of the chassis andcockpit top of the nextgeneration F1 car as well as

on the drivers’ overalls andteam equipment.

As for product, thecompany’s current line-up ofG37 saloon, coupe andconvertible models, compactcrossover EX, full-blown FX4x4 and M Series saloon hasjust been joined by the UKlaunch of the cleanest andfastest model in the range, theM35h petrol/electric hybrid.

It also coincides with theopening of the fifth and sixthInfiniti Centres, both in thenorth of England at Stockportand Leeds, as Infiniti rampsup its push to open a networkof 40 UK outlets in the nextfive years, and sell around100,000 cars in Europe.

The man driving theexpansion plans isNissan-Renault alliance chiefCarlos Ghosn, whose recentlyannounced strategicpartnership with Daimlerincludes an agreement tosupply Infiniti withMercedes-Benz engines. Inreturn, Mercedes will get to

use Renault powerplants inthe A-Class.

What it means is that by2013 the Infiniti M and Gmodels will have four cylinderengines and moresignificantly there will also bea C-segment car aimed at theAudi A3.

Add to these an electric carbased on the Nissan Leaf by2014 and a mid-enginedtwo-seater sports car to berevealed at next year’s GenevaMotor Show and it’s clear howmuch Infiniti means business– and how much business itexpects to attract with accessto so much more of the

market.But then the company

whose badge boasts 'InspiredPerformance' is leaving nostone unturned in its quest –there can’t be many carshowrooms that launch with abeamed message from a dualworld F1 champion, as was thecase in Stockport.

And on that note Infinitihas announced that the FXconcept designed and built forSebastian Vettel is to enterproduction.

The star of the Japanesecompany’s stand at lastmonth’s Frankfurt MotorShow features design,

engineering andaerodynamics upgradesinspired by Vettel, who is alsoan Infiniti brand ambassador.

Infiniti vice president AndyPalmer said: “Doing the FXSebastian Vettel version forFrankfurt was fun, but it’salso a kind of pilot. It’s aboutour equivalent ofMercedes-Benz AMG orBMW’s M Cars.

“We wanted to test theorganisation and see if itcould cope with this type ofspecial version. Sebastian’sFX demonstrates we are ableto do low volume specials andthis version is one of the firstthat will go to market.”

The FX Sebastian Vettel hasa 5.0-litre V8 engine tuned toproduce 420PS, and with ahigh downforce aerodynamicspackage developed by Infinitiin collaboration with Red BullRacing, the model is billed asthe most focused andexclusive sports crossoverever built.

Full details of theproduction version and priceshave yet to be confirmed.

AMAZING how timeschange – and some of themost popular brandswithin the span too.Back in the day, the Rio

was the model that set Kia on itspath to recognition in the UK byoffering value-conscious buyers lotsof car for their cash.

That was little more than adecade ago and in that time theKorean company’s status as amanufacturer of quality rather thanbudget-buy vehicles has beencemented.

All the marque’s products nowinclude a best in the businessseven-year warranty.

The area of the market the Rioinhabits – that of the supermini, orB segment – is the most fiercelycontested in the entire automotivearena.

An incredible 50 different carsoccupy the starting grid, includingones Kia sees as the principal

opposition like the Ford Fiesta,Renault Clio, Peugeot 207, VauxhallCorsa and Volkswagen Polo.

You need only turn the clock backa matter of weeks rather thanmonths and the Rio would havebeen a rank outsider in suchcompany.

But that was then and this is now.The Rio, designed under the

scrutiny of styling guru PeterSchreyer, has upped its game topremier league status. It’s fresh, it’smodern and it’s a car you can reallyenjoy taking for a drive – whetherthat be a potter round town or a

dash down the motorway.At present there are 11 versions

with prices from £10,595 and all arefive-door, though a three-door modelis due early next year.

What you get with the Rio is adynamic and sporty supermini witha coupe-like roofline. Despite thatshape there’s plenty of head, leg andshoulder room, though it can betight in the back if the front seatsneed to be slid fully back.

There’s a load of feelgood factor,ample stowage for bottles and cans,an iPod/USB connection, durableseats and upholstery – importantfor the re-sale market further downthe line – 60/40 split-fold rear seatsand a deep boot.

And even though it offers morepassenger space than the previousRio, it is no heavier despite extrasize and higher spec.

Careful weight management alsoplays its part in one of the range’smost important models, a 1.1-litre

CRDi EcoDynamics version whichboasts a mere 85g/km of emissionsand 88.3mpg fuel economy, betterthan any current internalcombustion engine on the marketincluding hybrids and eco specials.

The tested Rio was the 1.4-litrepetrol model which, according toKia figures, can top an average 50miles per gallon, though I couldn’t

quite match that figure.What’s certain is that this is a

well-refined car of balance, poiseand comfort. It also has somedecent punch once up to speed if notany great acceleration.

The four trim grades are named1, 1 Air, 2 and 3, all well kitted outso there is no need for expensiveoptions packages.

WELL it didn’t take long. The soapysponge has been put to work removingmelted chocolate from the upholsteryand those irritating sesame seedslodged in the seat seam grooves.

And some enthusiastic, or should Isay heavy handed, loading has resultedin one of the boot security covermountings being yanked out of itshousing.

But then kids don’t generally behavelike normal human beings, especiallywhen it’s anything to do with the car.

The beauty of the Renault Scenic is

that it’s a tough, durable beast andwell capable of withstanding theeveryday pounding it gets from thegrubby pawed throng.

One of the strong points of thisparticular Scenic is its engine, and barthe discrepancy of a few miles pergallon, it’s everything Renault claims itto be.

Only introduced in mid-summer,the 1.6-litre 130bhp ‘Energy’ diesel isheralded as offering the lowestemissions plus best fuel economy andperformance of any MPV powered by

a similar-sized engine in the UK.Currently available exclusively in

Dynamique TomTom versions of theScenic costing £20,900, it’s a quiet unitmated to a six-speed manual gearboxand offers smooth acceleration andlots of pulling power.

With the added benefit ofStop&Start technology, the Scenic hasan official Combined fuel figure of64.2mpg, though my own average -admittedly due to mainly urbandriving – is so far closer to 52mpg.NEXT TIME: The practical solution.
