A wealth of advanced features take Britain’s favourite car – the Focus has topped the UK sales charts for a decade – to a new level of refinement, comfort and safety. And buyers of this third generation of the popular hatchback are in for a real treat, with the sort of kit you would more often associate with the premium German brands. But then Ford has been at the sharp end of innovation for a century and demonstrated its 100 years of development at the new Focus launch in a simple yet effective way. Five cars from the Blue Oval’s heritage collection told their own story, starting with the company’s first global car - a Model T Ford built at Trafford Park in 1912 and the second oldest in existence. The Model Y, another pristine specimen, was the first £100 car; the Ford Corsair the first to use a V4 engine aimed at taking up less space than an in-line unit and the ‘jelly mould’ Sierra the car that set a new design direction. Finally, the Mk 1 Focus RS was a chassis innovation, taking driving dynamics to a new level at a price the man in the street could afford. Fast forward to this month’s arrival of the new Focus on the forecourts and you have a medium-sized marvel that can be equipped with the sort of kit to get the gizmo junkies drooling. There’s everything from traffic sign recognition and auto high beam to adaptive cruise control and a dynamic torque vectoring system. The car can even park itself. Active City Stop helps drivers avoid low speed collisions, Driver Alert can spot signs of waning concentration while blind spot recognition, lane keeping aid and lane departure warning all speak for themselves. It’s an impressive list and like the convenience or appearance choices, can be plucked from the options bin – the £750 Driver Assistance Pack looking especially tempting. The new Focus comes in two body styles, five-door and estate – there’s no plan to introduce a three-door model – with prices from £15,995 for the 1.6-litre 105PS petrol Focus Edge. It costs £500 more than the previous entry level car but boasts £1,000 worth of additional standard kit. Estate models, with the same engine, start at £17,095. At the opposite end of the four-grade scale, a top spec Titanium X model takes the Focus hatch up to £23,995 for a 2.0-litre TDCi diesel automatic and £25,095 for the estate version (on sale in May). Every model gets Bluetooth with voice control, DAB radio/CD player, rear spoiler or roof rails, air-con, capless refuelling, curtain airbags and electric windows. The engine line-up comprises three petrol engines and four diesels, entry level Edge and mid-range Zetec versions using the 105PS 1.6-litre unit or a 125PS version while a more powerful 150PS 1.6 EcoBoost petrol unit will grace the Titanium models. The latter is a cracking unit that combines spirited performance with decent economy, the important figures revealing average fuel consumption of 47.1mpg and 0-60 acceleration of 8.6 seconds. It also uses start-stop to cut emissions. The EcoBoost also has a CO2 output of 139g/km, same as 163PS 2.0-litre diesel also available in the Titanium versions – and that’s the highest CO2 output of all the engines being used in the Focus at present. More economical is the 1.6-litre diesel – available with both 95 and 115PS – which will return 67.3mpg with CO2 down to 109g/km. There’s a lot riding on the new Focus but Ford has kept ahead of the game – and come up with a techno treat of a model that looks the part and, more importantly, is a car you really look forward to driving. Driving while using your mobile phone came in a close second with 66 per cent agreeing it would put lives at serious risk and nearly two thirds believe that driving in the middle lane when the left hand lane is empty is dangerous and should be more strictly enforced. Interestingly only 20 per cent said that speeding should be more closely monitored and more than half of drivers surveyed went as far as to say that the national speed limit should actually be increased. ● A 1973 Ferrari Daytona festooned with a host of eclectic connections, including HRH The Prince of Wales, is set to create a stir when it goes under the hammer at Historics sale on Wednesday, May 18, at Brooklands in Surrey. One of just 158 right-hand-drive 365 GTB/4’s – which adopted the Daytona moniker following Ferrari’s 1-2-3 success in the 1967 Daytona 24-Hour race – the Pininfarina designed Gran Turismo was ordered new in 1973.

THE name conjures upvisions of fashion, film starsand cool Italian chic. Andwhen it comes to image andhistory there are few
marques that can match the iconicbadge of Alfa Romeo.
One of the most evocative modelsin the company’s rich heritage isthe car that brought Alfa motoringto the masses – the Giulietta, whichmade its debut back in 1954.
To celebrate Alfa’s 100thanniversary the Italians broughtRomeo and Giulietta back into eachothers arms in the shape of a sleek,sexy five-door hatchback.
It’s a chic machine in every sense– from the trademark V-shapedgrille and LED running lights to thetaut, muscular lines and upmarketinterior.
All car makers want strongerperformance, lower emissions andbetter fuel economy – and Alfa’sowners Fiat have cracked it with a
technology called Multiair in theshape of two turbocharged versionsof the company’s 1.4-litre petrolengine.
In simple terms, more precisecontrol is taken of the quantity andcharacteristics of the air drawn intothe cylinders during thecombustion cycle.
The Giulietta features the morepowerful 170bhp version of Multiairand, not to put too fine a point on it,it’s an absolute stormer. It gives theAlfa the sort of punch you just don’texpect from a 1.4-litre engine
Start&Stop is standard on the
Giulietta and is allied to a gear shiftindicator that suggests via adashboard arrow when to changeup or down.
Car companies hail theseintroductions as both fuel savingand ‘green’ but I find the Stop/Starton most cars irritating – the Alfa isno exception – and tend to ignorethe gearchange prompts.
That said, the Giulietta is aseriously rewarding car to drive,and benefits from a DNA set-upoffering three distinct personalitiestailored to driving style and roadconditions.
A three-position switch near thegear lever alters throttle responseand steering set-up for sportyDynamic driving, everyday Normaldriving and All-weather low gripconditions..
The familiar Alfa trim grades ofTurismo, Lusso and Veloce plus theperformance-bred Cloverleaf areavailable and all feature a fresh
interior that leaves behind theheavy use of plastics for a glossdash with metal effect inserts.
The aluminium billiard ballgearknob and drilled alloy pedalsare very effective and the leatherseats in the tested Veloce model hasthe Alfa logo embossed in theheadrests.
As to space, there’s plenty of
room for rear passengers providedthe driver’s seat isn’t slidcompletely back, though the centrerear position is uncomfortable, plusan adequate sized boot.
If there’s a criticism of this car itis merely that there could be betterstowage space for items likesunglasses – essential in a car likethe Giulietta.
