● CITY centre residentialdevelopment St Paul’s Square
has come up with a great idea toencourage residents to ‘get in thesaddle’ and cycle to work afterlaunching a free bike scheme to allnew occupants.
The initiative, which has beenlaunched in recognition ofLiverpool Council’s Year of Health
and Wellbeing, aims to encouragepeople to ditch their car and avoidthe stress of commuting by takingadvantage of the new free bikes.
The new bikes will be given toall new residents who purchase anapartment at the developmentfrom September.

business just four years ago,she’s been working in homedesign and DIY for the last 38!
“I started working for myfather at the age of 10,” saysElaine, and it is he whom shecredits for her determined workethic and business sense.
Dad was John Doherty, founderof the city’s Rapid Hardwarestores.
“Retailing is in my blood, I wasbrought up with DIY,” saysElaine, originally from Wooltonbut now living in Hale.
“I worked in every singledepartment in that store but Istarted at the bottom, brushingup and cleaning, and I loved it. Icouldn’t go on the tills until I was16 but I couldn’t wait.
“The only time I complainedwas when it was freezing in theshop and my dad used to say‘start cleaning up and you’ll soonbe warm’, because at first hecouldn’t afford the heating.
“When I worked in the tooldepartment and we sold screwsand nails in pounds and halfpounds, I had to pick them upfrom the dust as I swept, youcouldn’t thrown anything away. Itwas all money.
“I learnt from the best. Heinstilled in me good businesssense and all my core skills.”
Mother of two Elaine workedfor her father as she brought updaughters, Ashleigh, now 18, andStephanie, 15. And it was for himshe started a classic furnishingsdepartment which was to becomethe model for her ownbusinesses: She has ElaineCunningham Interiors inAigburth, Bo Concept in ChapelStreet, Liverpool city centre and,now next door, ElaineCunningham Home Store.
“Furniture and interiors is mymain passion,” says Elaine. “I’vesold a few houses in my time andthey sell like that,” she quips,snapping her fingers in the air.
“It’s a natural instinct. I justlove my home and I loveeverything about colours, designsand helping other people maketheir home perfect for them;personal to them.
“Many of my customers havebecome friends, they pop in for acoffee and to catch up, and that’salways how I want it to be.
“I love the fact that I havemade a lot of people happy bydoing their interiors and theirhomes. I started my business at44, my dad was 43 - he’s 80 now,and he says he would do it allover again.
“It was always a dream of mineto set up my own business but Icouldn’t do it until the girls wereolder.
“The classic furnishingsdepartment at Rapid was a bit
like running my own businessbut for the six months before Istarted up in Aigburth I couldn’teven sleep.
“My idea was tocreatesomewherewhere peoplecould comeand it waslike comingto a home,welcoming,relaxed andinformal,where peoplecouldinteract.”

look like.The idea behind the Elaine
Cunningham Home Store is thatpeople can refurbish a wholeroom in one stop, from furnitureto flooring, curtains to cushionsand artwork. She is even lookingat expanding into bathrooms andkitchens.
But while she aims high andworks hard, setting up a newbusiness isn’t without its fearseither. “It’s nerve-wracking,”
says Elaine.But Elaine carrieswith her always averse which, whenthe doubts creep in,she reads: “To not
dare is to have
already lost. We should seek outambitions in unrealised projectsbecause things only happen whenwe dream.”
We asked Elaine for some tipsand trends when looking toredesign our own homes:Changing a room
Note what position the roomfaces, because the light willdepend very much on that.
Is it square or narrow?Changing four walls and the
flooring make a big difference toa room so they must complementeach other.
Go for patterned walls if youwant to draw the room in orplain if you want to take it out.
Ask yourself what you want toachieve, how you want it to lookand feel.
How are you going to spendyour time there? Is it going to bea TV room, somewhere you wantto relax, a study or somewhere toentertain?
For instance, if it’s a bedroom,you want to be able to sleep in itand, to do that, you should beable to relax there, so it should be

LesDennisWhere was the family home you grew upin and what was it like?It was 83 Chesterton Street in Garston, andI'm pleased to say it's still there. I visited itwhen I did my TV series Les Dennis'sLiverpool. It was a two-up, two down terracedhouse and I was there until we moved toSpeke, when I was three or four.
What is your clearest memory of thehouse?That's probably the day the removal van came! Ihave this idea that I sat on a sofa in the back ofthe van, itself, when we moved. They wouldn'tallow that these days, would they?
Where was the first house you boughtyourself and what did it cost?My own first house was in Rainhill – a suburbansemi-detached – and it cost £6,800. That was in1974, when I was 21. Two years later, I movedto Woolton Hill Road in Woolton. The housecost £22,000 and, to this day, I wish I had keptit because it would have given me a base inLiverpool.
What made you want to buy it?Me and my first wife, Lynne, had got married. Iwas touring all over the place at the time andwe just wanted to put some roots down; wewent to Rainhill because we couldn't afford aplace in Liverpool.
What are the most important featuresyou look for when buying a house?A garden, because I have a little girl, Eleanor,who is two-and-a-half. I think outside space isso important. I also like original features in ahouse – a mix of modern with original features.
Are you a DIY trier or do you leave it tothe experts?I leave it to the experts! My wife, Claire, hasgot a tool box – and I've got the Yellow Pages!
What's the one thing you love mostabout your current house?I live in Highgate in London and we are lucky tohave a garden, while we are also close to theParkland Walk – a disused railway which isbasically a nature reserve now. I can walk outof the house and straight into an uninterrupted,five mile walk. It's instant access to nature.

or a lot: throw a few metallic scattercushions on the sofa, or decoratewith metallic wallpaper and hangmetallic print curtains. It createsstyle, and it’s also a modern andcontemporary look.■ MODERN NEUTRALS are big,with soft greens and greys. Manywallpapers have subtle patternsmeaning that as well as that featurewall, you can now wallpaper thewhole room too without it givingyou a headache. The result is acontemporary look, but one which iscalming and relaxed, and classic.
■ STRIPES and FLORALS is a greatcombination. Team a striped sofawith floral cushions, and finish aplain or floral chair with a stripedcushion. The contrast of the twomakes a great statement. Verticalstripes make a surface appear taller– something to remember for lowceiling rooms. On the other hand,horizontal stripes create the sense ofwidth.

● Painting a ceiling can be apain in the neck - literally - butit has to be done, and donebefore you decorate therest of the roombecause it's a messyjob. Start by clearingthe room as much aspossible andprotecting the floor(unless you'rereplacing it) and anyfurniture thatremains. Only paintceilings in goodnatural light,otherwise you may geta poor finish.● Make sure you weargoggles to protect youreyes and a shower cap foryour hair, as well as oldclothes you don't mindgetting paint on. Using aroller with a long handlemakes the job easier -apart from the edges -but it does stop youfrom seeing the bitsyou've missed andwhere the roller hasleft ridges of paint,etc. Standing on astepladder to paintis more awkward,but enables you tospot - and rectify -any problems as theyhappen.● If your ceiling hashairline cracks, tryone of the specialistpaints designed to coverthem and stop them fromreappearing.Alternatively, try flexiblefiller, although it's hard toget a neat repair on ceilingswith this because it's toorubbery to sand. If there's afloor above the ceiling, youmay have to be resigned tohaving hairline cracks becauseof people walking on the floor.● The easiest emulsions to useare semi-solid ones designedespecially for ceilings, whichreduce drips and splashes, butare only available in a limitedrange of colours. If you want adifferent colour, you can usenormal emulsion, but don'toverload your roller because itwill splatter paint everywhere.● Drips on the walls andskirting boards should bewiped off when wet, but if youmiss any, simply sand orscrape them off later. Once theceiling is done, you're ready topaint the rest of the room,starting with the coving orcornicing and working downfrom there.

IF YOU'VE been away for thesummer and returned todried-up pots, overgrownborders and a mass of weeds,now's the time to play catch-up
before everything spirals out ofcontrol.
Thanks to a pretty wet August,your grass will have grown but ifit's really long, don't try to cut itshort in one fell swoop or you'll becutting into thick brown stemswhich will leave your lawn lookinglike a mass of stubble.
Instead, do the mowing in stages,raising the blades as high aspossible initially and then loweringthem a notch each time you mowsubsequently, so the grass will soongrow leafy again.
If your hanging baskets andcontainers have completely driedout, the plants may be beyond helpso bite the bullet and empty thecontents on to the compost heap -then you can get an early start withautumn displays and spring bulbplantings.
Containers holding year-roundinterest plants such as shrubs orevergreens may benefit from beingsubmerged in a bucket of water tore-wet the compost, but take carenot to waterlog the plants.
After re-wetting, robustarchitectural plants such asphormiums and box can be liftedout of their containers with theirroot system intact to check if thecompost has been completelysoaked through.
If no-one has picked your crops inyour absence, you are likely to comehome to a large amount of stringy,tough runner beans which will needto be put on the compost heap, andthe plants will probably havestopped flowering. Pick all thebeans off the plants, give them sometomato feed and they should startproducing again.
Tomatoes left unpicked andunwatered will be dead after twoweeks, courgettes will have turned
into marrows which have a morebitter flavour but are still edible,lettuces will have gone to seed andwill need digging up andcomposting. However, you can justsow some more in their place.
Carrots may have gone to seedbut are still fine for eating. Herbssuch as basil will have become quitebushy, so pinch out the tips andconsider freezing some in ice cubes.
Try to find some time to clearvacant rows in your veg patch andrefill them with autumn and wintercrops immediately.
Borders should remain relativelyunaffected if you've only had twoweeks away and most areas havehad some rain this August.However, plants such as sweet peaswill have developed pods which willneed cutting off so that they mayflower again. All summer floweringplants will need deadheading andwatering.
The leaves of newly-plantedshrubs may start to look dull ifthey've been exposed to prolongeddry weather. Cut back damagedperennials to where the stems seem
to be green and healthy. Cut back allbrown stems and leaves and waterplants thoroughly. Don't rely on rainalone. Established trees and shrubsare unlikely to have been affectedwhile you were away.
With the heavy rain over August,weeds will have grown and will bethreatening to shed seeds - whichwill lead to more headaches nextyear if you don't remove them now.
All perennial plants that havenow finished flowering can eitherbe cut down or left until the spring.Cutting them down makes for a tidy
winter garden, but foliage, whetherit be dead or alive, helps keep thegarden warmer over winter, so itcan be left if you can bear theunsightliness.
In the greenhouse, giveeverything a good feed and water,deadhead flowering plants, harvestripe crops and have a good clear-upas you prepare for autumn andwinter.
Don't leave all these jobs, or you'llend up leaving them all winter –which will give you double the worknext spring.

Royal Liver Assurance also madeits opposition known because of theimpact on views of the Royal LiverBuilding - and, indeed, all ThreeGraces - in particular from theAlbert Dock.
But the deal was struck, and theunique and exclusive developmentis now well under way.
