    ALIGNING WITH THE LATEST STANDARDS

  • ECDIS PIT STOP

In the past years the ECDIS has claimed a dominant position on the Bridge.

The advantages over paper charts are obvious, but gained experience also gave

insights in how to optimize this system. This resulted in new standards that are

in place already for over a year, but from September next year all sailing ECDIS

systems should comply. This also requires action on your side. You have a RH

Marine (formerly Imtech Marine) made ECDIS system on board. We would like to

inform you in time that this older version ECDIS needs to be updated as well.

RH Marine can assist you in a smooth upgrade, making your UniMACS bridge system ready for the future. Just like a Formula 1 pit stop, well prepared.

    Whats happening?

The IHO has formulated a new and improved ECDIS standard, mainly focusing on a new presentation library. Usually when a system is installed on a vessel, the certification is valid from the date of installation for its complete lifetime, but in this case this is overruled the IMO. The IMO has announced its withdrawal of the old standards per September 2017, and the flag states will likely follow to declare this as compulsory. This means all older approved chart systems must be updated to comply with the new standards. If you use your system as an ECS and have a paper chart backup, there is no legal requirement to update, but still you could consider the benefits of the new features.

    Theres more than ECDIS

Over the past years we have updated all our bridge applications continuously. We upgraded to Windows 7, added nice features and implemented new rules and regulations, amongst it the new IEC standard IEC 61174 Edition 4.0. We also recently introduced a new brand name for our Bridge product line, meaning the UniMACS4000 is now called Rhodium Bridge.

    Hardware

The impact of this update is also subject to the installed hardware. Depending on your current hardware configuration you may need to upgrade computers and/or monitors to run the new applications. See Table 1 how it applies on your configuration. A ship environment asks a lot of computers, so it is a good idea anyway to exchange the computers, as these have been subject to wear and tear for quite some years. Next to the latest ECDIS updates, updating your UniMACS radar, Conning, autopilot and/or DP software also introduces new functionalities, making your life as a navigator easier, and your system ready for the future.
