Extended CareChronicles

J U L Y · I S S U E 5 · V O L U M E 8

Well it has been a busy couple of months and we suspended ECC Chronicles during the initial stages of the COVID-19 crisis. But as States, Cities, County are all trying to move to a more normal way of life, we too at ECC and our consulted facilities must.

In the US and particularly in our area we have been facing the COVID-19 Pandemic for three months. We have seen the numbers of deaths that have faced our Nation, now over 100,000 lives have been lost to this virus. And read any newspaper or watch any newscast and you will find Nursing Homes have been one of the hardest hit population.

Why you might ask? The first answer to the question is what comes to mind most often – nursing home residents are often already sick either with multiple diagnoses (co-morbidities) or they are immunocompromised because of illness or age or both.

Another reason is because testing has been so spotty throughout the Country. For a large part of the timeframe between realizing the pandemic was upon the US until now- testing criteria continues to change. Some testing centers you had to have symptoms to be tested, some were health care workers could be tested, some rationed testing allowing some facilities to only test five (5) residents others had to have symptoms to test. So there is no clear picture at this time of how many residents in any given nursing home across the US there are that have the virus.

Now for some positive news: • Testing is opening up. The Federal Government and some State and County Health Departments of Public Health are creating a push to get not only all residents tested but staff as well. Now this is no panacea – there is still no cure and no medications.

Know that in our consulted facilities whether tested or not any resident showing signs or symptoms of possible COVID-19 are treated as Persons Under Investigation (PUIs) and are isolated with vital signs and O2 saturations monitored more frequently to weather the storm to a hopeful, prayerful recovery. And any employees who have been exposed (without PPE – usually occurs in our private lives) or shows signs and symptoms are treated as PUIs as well and cannot work.

• Our residents are recovering. And the numbers of residents we have as PUIs is dropping week over week.

I know in May we did a special edition of ECC Chronicles as a thank you to the health care workers in our consulted facilities and I don’t think we can thank them enough but I would also like to extend our gratitude and thanks to the essential workers of ECC as well. Everyone has dug deep and continued to move this ship forward. Thank you.

Of late I have been quoted on my words of caution that I have told reporters. I think it is worthy here so we can all advocate for our industry – don’t cast dispersions on the Nursing Home industry much like we wouldn’t cast them on victims of a tornado or a hurricane – this too is a perfect storm.

Stay safe and remember 2 important safety facts: wash hands often and social distance when not wearing protective masks.

Tough Times Don’t Last, Tough Teams Do! Celebrating our Front Line Warriors! St James Manor and Villas is proud to honor their warrior team of Nurses and CNAs. It takes a village and through it all they banned together, not only in the good times but also in the most difficult times our industry has faced. This team had triumphed through it all and is celebrating the positive with their numerous recoveries with positive outcomes. The St James Team has shown us they are truly “All in this Together”!

Our Indiana facilities are gearing up to welcome back our families, who will soon be able to visit outdoors with their loved ones (wearing PPE and with social distancing).

Thank you to the admissions, marketing, & activity teams, for rolling up your sleeves and getting our outdoors cleaned up and visitor ready. Special recognition and hat’s off to Kelly Dooley (Business Dev. Dir) and Brittney Monaco (AL Move-in Specialist) at Dyer Nursing & Rehab who KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK!

Indiana First Impressions

Even though the days wore on and there seemed to be no light at the end of the tunnel, the team at Chateau persevered! The number of cases decreased, our PUI diminished. Finally one day the second week of June, we could finally say Chateau was COVID FREE!!!!!!! We could never thank the staff enough for their hard work and drive. A truly remarkable team!

South Holland Manor is very proud of the appearance of our building. In the midst of these turbulent times, the Environmental Services team members have remained loyal and dedicated to their jobs. They have provided enhanced/more frequent surface cleaning; residents are receiving their personal laundry weekly, and our floors are shiny and bright. In addition they are always willing to help out-when

just an extra pair of hands is needed. Together-as a team-we will get through this. Many thanks to our wonderful housekeeping, laundry and floor care team!

There are a lot of exciting changes happening at Burbank Rehabilitation Center! We’ve recently had the opportunity to promote from within Tammy Rodgers and Revis Carter, our new Case Manager and Admissions Director.

As we continue to grow, we have made some new and exciting hires. We recently brought on Richard Reollar as our new Administrator, Vakisha Rachel as our new DON, and Andres Vargas as our new Housekeeping Supervisor.

We feel fortunate to have found such tremendous people and talent for these roles and are excited about the future at Burbank Rehabilitation Center.
