sCouting middlEBurYThe No. 2 nationally ranked Middlebury College Panthers own a 6-1-0 record with their only loss of the season coming against No. 1 Plattsburgh State. Credit a large part of Middlebury’s success this year to their defen-sive efforts as they boast the nation’s third best scoring defense, limiting opposing offenses to just 1.14 goals per game. A big part of the Panther defense is their presence betweent he pipes as junior netminders Anna-belle Jones and Madeline Marsh both rank among the nation’s best in goals against average and save percentage.

PanthErs to watChThe Middlbury offense is led by a trio of junior forwards in Katie Sul-livan, Hannah Bielawski, and Emily Fluke. Sullivan and Bielawski share the team lead in points with 10 apiece with Fluke right behind them with eight. Sullivan leads all Middlebury scorers with five goals while Bielawski and Fluke share the team lead in assists with six.

grudgE matChEsElmira will have a rare opportunity to avenge their only losses of the sea-son in their next two games against Middlebury College and Norwich University. In both games, Elmira held an early lead but would come out on the wrong side once the final buzzer sounded.

titlE dEfEnsEThis is the third time in just 12 years of EC women’s ice hockey that the Purple and Gold will begin a season as the defending national champi-ons. Despite losing some key pieces from last year’s team, the 2013-14 edi-tion of EC women’s ice hockey has returned six of its top 10 scorers and is ready to bring another title back home.

The Soaring Eagles successfully defended their first national champion-ship, winning back-to-back titles in 2001-02 and 2002-03. EC became the first program to win NCAA Championships in each of their first two years of existence.

nEw usCho PollThe Soaring Eagles continue to hold down the number four spot in the latest USCHO poll. In fact, the top four teams in the country stayed the same for a sixth consecutive week.
