sCorinG every Way PossiBleJosh Burnell ’15 tallied six goals in EC’s three games last week, showing his versatility in the process. The captain scored two even strength goals, two power play goals, and the first two shorthanded goals of his career.

tHroW in your HatsBurnell also recorded his first career hat trick in Saturday’s victory over Neumann. The captain scored back-to-back goals 15 seconds apart from one another to give EC a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period and then added a short-handed goal late in the third period to put the game on ice.

love is in tHe airTaylor Love ’16 returned from a 12-game absence against Neumann over the weekend and immediately made his presence known on the ice. The second-year defenseman imposed his physicality by applying a jarring hit to a Neumann skater on his first shift and also displayed his offensive abil-ity by totaling one goal and two assists over the weekend, including the game-winning score in Saturday’s 7-3 victory.

tHere’s sometHinG in tHe [aPPle] CoreSal Magliocco ’17 has put together an impressive rookie campaign be-tween the pipes after coming to EC from the New York Apple Core junior team. Oddly enough, the goaltender that Magliocco will most likely see across the ice from him Friday, Nick Therrien, also played for New York Apple Core before arriving at Utica College in 2010.

nintH in tHe nationJosh Burnell ’15 has really come on since the calendar flipped to 2014 as the captain has averaged 2.14 points per game in the seven games since the New Year. Burnell has raised his points per game average from 1.1 to 1.53 in the last seven games, vaulting himself into ninth in the country in points per game.

GettinG it Done on sPeCial teamsBurnell has been taking advantage of EC’s special teams opportunities, scoring 10 of his 13 goals this season with either a man up or a man down. Burnell is tied for eighth in the nation with eight power play goals and is also tied for second in the country with two short-handed goals.

national suPremaCyThe Purple and Gold capitalized on three of their 10 power play attempts against the Knights, allowing the men to regain the national number one ranking in power play efficiency. Overall, EC has scored on 30 of the 94 power play attempts they have had this season, a 31.9 percent success rate.

toP sCorinG eCaC West teamAfter averaging 5.33 goals per game last week, Elmira raised their season scoring average to 3.94 goals per game, moving into ninth place nationally in scoring offense. The Soaring Eagles have been even better in confer-ence play, averaging 4.25 goals per game against conference opponents. Additionally, EC is the top scoring team in the ECAC West Conference.

CoaCH saul vs. utiCaSince Coach Saul has taken the reins of the Soaring Eagles, the Purple and Gold have gone 8-3-2 against Utica, but have lost the previous two meetings with the Pioneers.

sCoutinG utiCaUtica College enters this weekend of play with a 10-4-4 record and a 5-2-1 mark in ECAC West play after a 0-1-1 weekend. In fact, the Pioneers have struggled since the New Year as they hold a 2-2-3 record in games played in 2014. Some of the recent slip-ups include a loss to Nazareth College, who is last in the ECAC West, and ties to Hamilton College and The Col-lege at Brockport, two schools with losing records.

utiCa’s sCorinG leaDersThe Pioneers have seven players with double digit points this season, led by fourth-year forward, Trever Hertz. Hertz has 15 points on five goals and a team-leading 10 assists. Adam Graff and Ridge Garbutt are tied for second on the team in points with 13 with Graff holding the title as lead-ing goal scorer with seven goals on the year. Keep an eye out for freshman defender Kevin Kirisits if Utica goes on the power play. Kirisits leads the Pioneers with three power play goals.

stronG GoaltenDinGNick Therrien has been one of the best goaltenders in the country for Utica this season. Therrien has made 313 saves on a .929 save percentage while posting a 1.97 goals against average this season. He is 14th in the nation in both save percentage and GAA.

not in 40 yearsLast season’s leading goal scorer, Carter Shinkaruk ’16 became the first freshman to lead the Soaring Eagles in goals scored. Shinkaruk scored nine goals in his rookie campaign and will surely be a force on offense in 2013-14.

a siGn of tHinGs to Come?Last season the Soaring Eagles posted a 10-16 overall record, their first losing season since the 2004-05 season. Following the 2004-05 season, the EC men marched all the way to semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.
