sEConD PErioD sCorErsDespite what happens in the first and third periods, you can count on one thing from the Soaring Eagles’ offense, and that is second period scoring. Of Elmira’s 36 goals this season, 16 have been scored in the sec-ond period, the most in any period by EC. The second period success has become more evident in their last five games as 10 of their 18 goals were scored in the second periods. The second period has been key for the Purple and Gold as the men have an impressive 5-1 record when either leading or being tied after the second period.

four nEar thE toPThe Soaring Eagles boast four of the best scorers in the ECAC West Con-ference through the first six games of conference play. Josh Burnell ’15, Carter Shinkaruk ’16, Jesper Strale ’14, and Jarryd ten Vaanholt ’16 each have recorded seven points and are tied for third in conference scoring with a 1.17 points per game average. EC is the only ECAC West team to have more than two players rank in the top-10 in scoring.

sharing thE wEalthEC certainly knows how to pass the puck around the ice as the Purple and Gold have recorded 60 assists on 36 goals. Jarryd ten Vaanholt ’16 leads the pack with nine assists on the season, one of 16 Soaring Eagles who have tallied assists on the year.

a trio of lEaDErsThe generosity has continued into conference play as a trio of Elmira play-ers, Liam Burtt ’16, Jesper Strale ’14, and Jarryd ten Vaanholt ’16, lead the conference in assists through five games with five each.

thrEE out of fourIt took a few games for first-year talent Alexander Taulien ’17 to get his legs under him, but since scoring his first career goal against Nazareth College on November 22nd, the forward has gone on a little scoring tear, tallying two additional goals and an assist over his last three games. The forward netted a goal in EC’s 3-2 win over Nazareth on November 23rd before recording an assist and his first game-winning goal against Fitch-burg State.

saul at Elmira vs. thE sunYaCSince his arrival in 2009, Coach Saul has seen success against teams in the SUNYAC Conference, going 24-16-2. His best year against the SUNYAC was in 2010-11 when his Soaring Eagles went 7-2-1.

all-timE vs. Buffalo statEElmira owns a decisive advantage in the all-time series against Buffalo State as the Soaring Eagles hold a 6-1-0 record with their first meeting dating back to the 1995-96 season. The Bengals took the most recent matchup, a 3-0 decision, in Coach Saul’s only game against Buffalo State.

all-timE vs. gEnEsEoGeneseo is one of EC’s oldest opponents as the matchup dates back to the 1975-76 season. The Soaring Eagles own an impressive 36-9-1 record over the Knights.

CoaCh saul vs. gEnEsEoThe Soaring Eagles have played the Knights three times with Coach Saul on the bench, winning two of those three.

Buffalo statE this sEasonBuffalo State enters Friday’s game with a 5-7-3 overall record, highlighted by a tie against then-No. 3 Plattsburgh State and a win over the Soaring Eagles on November 30th. The Bengals come limping into this matchup, however, as the men have gone 1-5-1 since that win.

Buffalo statE’s sCoring oPtionsBuffalo State has received point contributions from all but one skater this season and is led offensively by two players who have scored double-digit points. Dan Turgeon is tops on the team in points (13) and goals (7) while Mike Zannella is second on the team in points (11) and leads the Bengals in assists (7).

gEnEsEo this sEasonSUNY Geneseo enters tonight’s contest with a 9-2-0 overall record with their only two losses of the season coming against a pair of Top 3 nation-ally ranked teams in No. 1 Adrian College and No. 3 Plattsburgh State. The Knights of SUNY Geneseo are riding a five-game win streak with a signature win over then-No. 8 Oswego State.

gEnEsEo’s offEnsivE thrEatsKeep an eye on Zachary Vit ’14 and Tyler Brickler ’15 as both players have been carrying the Gen¬eseo offense in 2013-14. Vit has nine goals on the season, 11th most in the country, while Brickler has tallied eight goals which is good enough for 19th most in the nation.

not in 40 YEarsLast season’s leading goal scorer, Carter Shinkaruk ’16 became the first freshman to lead the Soaring Eagles in goals scored. Shinkaruk scored nine goals in his rookie campaign and will surely be a force on offense in 2013-14.

a sign of things to ComE?Last season the Soaring Eagles posted a 10-16 overall record, their first losing season since the 2004-05 season. Following the 2004-05 season, the EC men marched all the way to semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.
