EBSCOadmin: CustomLinks I

• CustomLinks are links that allow users to go from a record in EBSCOhost or EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) to almost any other resource the library has access to.

• The primary goal of most CustomLinks is to take the user to a location where the full text for a given article, book, or document can be accessed.

• EBSCOadmin allows administrators to set the order of the Full Text links that appear on the EDS result list e.g., if you would like a specific CustomLink to appear before EBSCOhost Full Text, the order can be adjusted to display it accordingly.

• It is important to think about the order of the links for your institution because preferences do vary.

EBSCOhost Linked Full Text option links records in EDS to Full Text available via EBSCO e-journals or CrossRef. These are referred to as SmartLinks+ and the link will carry the user to the full text hosted on the provider's website. EBSCOhost Full Text (PDF Full Text or HTML Full Text) provides users with access to full text that is natively available in any subscribed EBSCOhost full text database. Smartlinks, an EBSCO technology, can also provide native full text when a record is found from an A&I database (subject index), but the user has library access/rights to the full text through another EBSCOhost full text database. EDS Partner Database and Publisher CustomLinks are links EBSCO created, often with input from the publisher or content provider. This ensures that links in EDS work as accurately as possible with the target records provided. Look for CustomLinks marked as "EDS -- Partner Name" in EBSCOadmin, though CustomLink labels can vary. Link Resolvers utilize OpenURL technology. This means that critical metadata elements from the record are inserted into a standard format to resolve the user to the end location of the full text of the article based on the library’s full text access/rights.

Available in Library Collection Limiter – How Does it Work?• The Available in Library Collection Limiter returns all content

that is available to the user of the library both print and full text.

• Full Text Items are returned if they have a matching full text link that is being filtered provided via information in holdings management or system collections.

Ranking CustomLinks in EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) IWhen you add a new CustomLink, it is placed at the end of the list. To facilitate the management, we recommend leaving space in your sequence to allow for more CustomLinks to be added in the future, as the content in EDS expands. For example:

0 - Linked Full Text

1 – EBSCOhost Full Text (PDF Full Text or HTML Full Text)

2 – Link Resolver

3 – Publisher CustomLink

3 – Publisher CustomLink

3 - Publisher CustomLink

4 – EDS Partner Database

4 – EDS Partner Database

4 – EDS Partner Database

4 – EDS Partner Database

Note: CustomLinks can share the same ranking which will allow administers to easily insert new CustomLinks. Administrators have the ability to customize the link ranking in whichever way best supports their users’ needs.

Ranking Full Text Finder Links• You may want to control the order of the links on your Full Text Finder links menu to further customise access to your

collections.

• One way to improve your linking experience ensure that your most valued links are at the top of the menu. The default rank assigned by the system for non-full text target links starts at 10—any targets that are specifically full text should be using arank lower than 10. For that reason, we recommend ranking your links with a priority similar to the following:

1 – Vendor/Publisher full text article links

3 – Free/Open Access article level links

4 – Full text issue level links

6 – Free/Open Access issue level links

7 – Full text volume level links

8 – Full text journal level links

9 – Free/Open Access journal level links

Note: Links that have the same rank will display in alphabetical order.

the institutions at their request.
