With interactive displays galore, Super Bee students had a blast at this year’s Science Night at E.B. on August 28th. Mahalo nut loa to Mr. Christian Wong and the Hawaii Science and Technology Museum for sponsoring the event, and the EB deSilva PTA for the delicious pizza enjoyed by all!

Once completed,our children can use it duringrecesses and P.E. for basketball,volleyball, tennis, and four-square. Wearealso takingbidsto extend the area adjacent toour Kindergarten classrooms.This area will be covered andcontain picnic tables for the useofouryoungestSuperBees. The first month of school hascomeandgoneinwhatseemslikeablinkoftheeye.Aswemoveintothe second month of school Iwould like to bring to yourattentiontheHalesofE.B.deSilva.For our new SuperBee Ohana Iwould like to take some time toexplainthepurposeandthevision.

Na Hopena A’o is the State ofHawaii ’s framework to helpdevelop the skills, behaviors anddispositionsthatarereminiscentofHawaiʻi’s unique context, and tohonor the qualities and values ofthe indigenous language andculture of Hawaiʻi. The frameworkrevolves around six components;B e l o n g i n g , Re s p on s i b i l i t y,Excellence,Aloha,Totalwell-being,and Hawaii (Hā.) Through the useofNaHalewehopetoinstillthesecomponents within all of ourstudents in a way unique to ourschool and community. It is alsoourbeliefthattheHalewillhelptocultivate positive relationshipsamongst all members of ourFaculty, Staff, and Studentsthrough teamwork and commongoals.

Allfaculty,staff,andstudentsaresortedintofivedifferentHale.Yourchild’sHalewill notnecessarilybe

thesameashisorherteacher.NaHale participate in a variety ofcompetitions which focus onschool initiatives (attendancepercentage) or community service(cannedfooddrive.)Throughthesecompetitions students strengthentheir Hā or BREATH. Points aretallied and an overall winner isrecognized at the end of the yearwith our Hui Po’okela perpetualplaque. The friendly competitionprovides an excellent opportunityfor learningandgrowthregardlessofwhereeachHaleendsupattheendoftheyear.

Box Tops:

• Download the new Box Top app from your smart phone to start participating in Digital Box Tops. • The first time you use the app, you will be asked to set up a user name, password and select our school:

Ernest B DeSilva Elementary. • Take pictures of your shopping receipts from the app and you are good to go! It's that easy! • Keep in mind that receipts need to be scanned within 2 weeks of purchase. Try scanning the receipt as soon

as you get home from your shopping trip. You might even be surprised to learn that you’ve purchased a digital box top item without even knowing it! And shopping at certain stores will give you bonus offers!

• There are a few vendor items that have not converted to digital yet. Please check your product and continue to clip and send those to the school for the time being. (A list of qualifying items is available on page 7)

send them to school.

Every valid Box Tops clip is worth 10¢ for your school. Make sure each one has a clearly

visible product acronym and expiration date.

• All valid Box Tops clips submitted per the Program Rules by a Coordinator(s) of (an) eligible, enrolled school(s) will be

honored.

THE NEW

BOX TOPS LABELS

Eventually the Box Tops program will become digital-only. Participating brands are starting to

change their packaging from a traditional Box Tops clip to the new Box Top label.

If you see this label, use the new Box Tops app to scan your receipt. Box Tops are still worth 10¢

each for your school. The app will find participating products purchased at any store and

instantly add cash to your school's earnings online.

Local Products 2019One of the wonderful things that makes EB D e S i l v a s u c h a wonderful place is the supportive community of famil ies, alumni and friends that surround our school.

On that note, we ask for your support of our largest fundraiser: Local Products 2019. Tickets were d is t r ibuted on S e p t e m b e r 9 t h a n d families have two weeks to sell five tickets each of seven products (35 t ickets total). Keep in mind that money’s ra ised through the PTA has paid for AC in every classroom (a benefit most schools in the state

TAYVEN AND THE MAN - Tayven did a great job emceeing a special Frank DeLima presentation recently. The two had a little chat, and Tayven even had his emcee notes autographed by the great comedian. Mr. DeLima talked to the students about staying in school, staying healthy, staying away from drugs, and the importance of going to college and making smart career choices. Mr. DeLima even sang a few of his humorous songs, and a great time was had by all! It’s always wonderful to have Frank DeLima in the house!

ALL THE DRAMA - Put on your space suits and get ready to blast off as grade 5 students present this year’s production of “Vacation on Mars” in the month of February. Students have started Performing Arts classes with Ms. Jackie Seaquist - Lead Teacher and Director of the Performing Arts Learning Center (PALC) at Hilo High School. Last year’s successful production of “The Thirteen Colonies” was such a great learning experience that Mr. Hondo and Mrs. Miguel have decided to have their classes continue again this school year. A special EdVenture session will be starting in October for students in the fifth grade. Registration information will be distributed within the next few weeks.
