TODAY’S HEADLINESRACING REVIEW

ENABLE IMPERIOUS IN BRITISH SWAN SONGEnable was crowned queen over two years ago, but, in her swan song on British soil, her legions of fans treated the Gr.1 Yorkshire Oaks as yet another coronation, as Juddmonte’s superstar swept to an imperious victory on the Knavesmire.

For all the tension of the build-up, in the event, victory was oh so easy. The daughter of Nathaniel broke well, went straight to the head of affairs and, simply put, stayed there for every inch of the 1m4f contest.

Lah Ti Dar (Dubawi) travelled closest to Enable, with Magical (Galileo) tracking close behind in third and South Sea Pearl (Galileo) outpaced from the outset. On the turn for home, Magical moved closer as Frankie Dettori took a look back between his legs to gauge his rivals. As Lah Ti Dar and Magical closed briefly on either side of the leader, Dettori had barely to shake her up for the five-year-old to quicken again and forge clear, storming to victory by two and three-quarter lengths from Magical, who finished runner-up to the winner for the third time at Gr.1 level, with a gap of ten lengths back to Lah Ti Dar, who finished a length and a half clear of South Sea Pearl.

With her tenth Gr.1 victory safely under her belt, Enable will next bid for her third consecutive victory in the Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, before travelling to America for the Breeders’ Cup.

That filly somewhat marred her chances in yesterday’s 6f contest by breaking slowly, whereas Living In the Past was bounced out of the stalls by Danny Tudhope and went straight to the lead, pursued by Nasaiym (More Than Ready), with the Gr.3 Molecomb Stakes winner Liberty Beach (Cable Bay) among those in the chasing pack. With two furlongs to go, Tudhope asked Living In the Past to extend again and she quickened well. Precious Moments (Gleneagles) and Liberty Beach made valiant attempts to live with her, but the bird had flown, and Living In The Past triumphed by three quarters of a length from

of her. She had to battle in the King George and, although Frankie wasn’t hard on her she had to fight, and she’s come back and won again today.

“She now has the big old mountain of the Arc to climb, with the three-year-old colts getting the weight. If she runs back to what she ran in the Arc as a three-year-old, she is mighty hard to beat, but I do emphasise to look out for the three-year-olds.

“She has this amazingly competitive mind. She is just a great filly with a great constitution. I’ve seen some great race mares in my time and she is one of those.”

Prince Khalid Abdullah’s homebred mare follows in the footsteps of Only Royale and Islington as dual winners of the Yorkshire Oaks since the race was opened to older horses in 1994. She is the fifth foal out of the Listed winner Concentric (Sadler’s Wells), from a typically top-class Juddmonte family that also includes such stars as Flintshire.

LIVING IN THE PAST STAMPS HERSELF A FILLY FOR THE FUTUREWe may be coming to the end of the road with Enable, but a couple of hours earlier Living In The Past marked herself as a filly for the future when making all to land the Gr.2 Lowther Stakes, booking her ticket to the Gr.1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket in the process.

Clipper Logistics’ daughter of Bungle Inthejungle, trained by Karl Burke, was last seen when beaten by three quarters of a length in the Gr.3 Princess Margaret Stakes at Ascot last month by Under The Stars (Night Of Thunder).

Liberty Beach, with Good Vibes running on for third place, a length in arrears of the runner-up.

A graduate of the Goffs Sportsman’s Sale, where she was purchased for €65,000 by Joe Foley, Living In the Past was bred by Newlands House Stud and Ann Marie Burns out of the Cadeaux Genereux mare Ayr Missile, who was herself placed twice from six starts and is a half-sister to Outer Space (Acclamation), a prolific winner who was also Gr.3-placed at two.

FIRST LISTED SUCCESS FOR SEARCH FOR A SONGSearch For A Song scored the first black-type victory of her career yesterday, landing the Listed Galtres Stakes on the Knavesmire, on an afternoon of talented fillies at York.

Moyglare Stud’s daughter of Galileo was pitched into Gr.1 company last time out in the Gr.1 Irish Oaks on only her third start, but yesterday’s step down in class gave the three-year-old the chance to add a valuable black-type success to her CV for Dermot Weld.

Spirit Of Appin (Champs Elysees) made the early running with Search For A Song on the wide outside, before tracking across to join the leaders as Frankellina (Frankel) went to the lead. Spirit Of Appin resumed at the head of affairs at the top of the home stretch but was joined by Search For A Song with two furlongs of the 1m4f trip to run. Quickly into the lead, Search For A Song was challenged inside the final furlong by Vivionn (Dubawi), but that rival could not reach the winner, who had a length and three quarters in hand at the line. Spirit Of Appin finished third, a head behind the runner-up.

Successful on her debut at the end of May, Search For A Song also finished runner-up in the Listed Naas Oaks Trial in June, prior to her Classic bid. She holds an array of eye-catching entries, including the Gr.1 St Leger, the Gr.1 Irish St Leger and the Gr.1 British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes.

Out of the winning Danehill mare Polished Gem, she is a full-sister to the Listed winner Falcon Eight and is also closely related to the Gr.1 winner and sire Free Eagle (High Chaparral), as well as being a half-sister to the multiple Gr.2 winner Custom Cut (Notnowcato), Gr.2 winner and Gr.1-placed Sapphire (Medicean), and Valac (Dark Angel), a Gr.3 winner in Australia. Their dam is out of the Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Trusted Partner (Affirmed), a full-sister to the high-class stayer Easy To Copy, the Gr.3 winner Low Key Affair and the Listed winner Epicure’s Garden, from an outstanding family.

FRANCE

THUNDER ROLLS AT CLAIREFONTAINESurrey Thunder has been highly-tried of late but the son of Le Havre resumed winning ways yesterday when landing the Listed Grand Prix de Clairefontaine over 2400m.

Joseph Tuite’s charge missed out on a black-type win by a nose in March, and went on to finish third in Gr.3 company in both France and Germany, before finishing fifth in the Gr.1 Deutsches Derby last month. Fifth in the Gr.3 Rose of Lancaster Stakes 12 days earlier, in yesterday’s contest he was settled towards the rear of the field as Scarlet Tufty (Siyouni) took the runners along, with Rudimental (Mastercraftsman) in second and Styledargent (Style Vendome) in third. As the field reached the home straight and made for the stands side rail, Surrey Thunder

tracked across the course to take the lead and was pushed out to the line by Alexis Badel to score by a length and a quarter from Eliade (Teofilo), with Styledargent three lengths away in third.

Bred by Patrick Chedeville and Cocheese Bloodstock Anstalt and twice a graduate of the Arqana sales ring, having been purchased at both the October Yearling Sale and the May Breeze-Up Sale, the three-year-old is a half-brother to the Listed-placed juvenile Sgarzulina (Invincible Spirit), out of an unraced Indian Ridge daughter of the Gr.3 Prix de Sandringham winner Zarkiya (Catrail), a half-sister to the dam of the outstanding Zarkava.

NATIONAL HUNT RACING REVIEWFRANCE

VIKING SAILS TO LISTED SUCCESSViking De Balme (Cachet Noir) registered his first black-type victory when winning yesterday’s Listed Grand Steeple-Chase Ville de Deauville at Clairefontaine in taking fashion.

The ten-year-old, trained by Francois Nicolle, was Listed-placed at Auteuil over two years ago in June 2017, but was not seen on the racecourse after that contest until returning at Nantes in March this year. He then won for the first time in two years when scoring over hurdles at Pompadour in July.

In yesterday’s 4500m chase, he travelled well in mid-division throughout, chasing the pace set by Comeken (Kendargent), with Tsar Noir (Redback) in second. The order changed little throughout until the winner crept closer with four fences to go, just as Uno Bale (Pistolero) appeared to slip up on the Flat, bringing down three of his rivals. Viking De Balme launched his challenge on the outside on the turn for home as the runners approached the 18th fence, and settled down to duel it out with Tsar Noir. The winner was first to rise at the final fence and drew steadily away in the home straight to score by six and a half lengths, with Tsar Noir four and a half lengths ahead of the third-placed Wamba (Croco Rouge).

Bred by his joint-owner Jean-Luc Henry, Viking De Balme is out of the Mansonnien mare Jonquille De Balme, twice a winner over hurdles at Auteuil, as well as once on the Flat.

MORE GR.1 GLORY FOR IRISH-BRED WINSTON CThe Irish-bred Winston C (Rip Van Winkle) scored at the top level for the second time since switching to America and Jonathan Sheppard when running away with the Gr.1 New York Turf Writers Cup Hurdle at Saratoga yesterday.

Successful in the Gr.1 A P Smithwick Memorial Steeplechase at the same venue in July, Winston C ran out victorious by eight and three-quarter lengths from the fellow Irish-bred pair Gibralfaro (Dalakhani) and Belisarius (Montjeu), a nose separating them.

Bred by Patrick Kelly, Winston C was bought for 80,000gns as a foal at Tattersalls by Glenvale Stud from Ballybin Stud and then re-sold to Bill Gredley for 55,000gns at the following year’s Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2. A dual Flat winner when in the care of Michael Bell, once at two and once at three, he was sold at the 2018 Tattersalls February Sale for 30,000gns to Paul Harley Bloodstock. He reappeared under the tutelage of Harry Fry and, having made three unsuccessful Flat starts, was sent hurdling in the new year. He won three of his first four starts, before finishing fifth on his final European start in the Gr.1 Top Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree in April.

SOVEREIGNS BIDS TO BAG THE NUNTHORPEA field of 12 go to battle in the Gr.1 Nunthorpe Stakes today over 5f at York, with Ten Sovereigns leading the market.

Aidan O’Brien’s Ten Sovereigns (No Nay Never) won the Gr.1 Middle Park Stakes at the end of last season, but failed to get up in the Gr.1 2,000 Guineas and finished two and a half lengths behind Advertise on his second start in the Gr.1 Commonwealth Cup. The former reversed the form last time out in the Gr.1 July Cup, beating stablemates Fairyland (Kodiac), last season’s Gr.1 Cheveley Park Stakes heroine, into third and So Perfect (Scat Daddy), last year’s Gr.1 Phoenix Stakes second and subsequent Gr.3 winner, into fifth.

Shadwell’s Battaash (Dark Angel), winner of the Gr.2 King George Stakes last time out, triumphed in the Gr.1 Prix de l’Abbaye at three, following up with four Gr.2 victories in his next two seasons, but has found several better in his four Gr.1 starts since.

One of those was Mabs Cross (Dutch Art) who won the Gr.1 Prix de l’Abbaye last year, beating Battaash into fourth by a mere three quarters of a length, with last year’s Gr.2 Flying Childers Stakes victor Soldier’s Call (Showcasing) in third.

Successful in two Listed events, El Astronaute (Approve) was second in a Gr.2 on his penultimate start, four lengths ahead of third-placed Garrus (Acclamation), also a Listed winner. El Astronaute followed that up with a well-beaten fifth in the Gr.2 King George Stakes, finishing a length behind Rumble Inthejungle (Bungle Inthejungle), last season’s Gr.3 Molecomb Stakes winner and Gr.1 Middle Park Stakes third.

The outsiders of the field include Copper Knight (Sir Prancealot), a Listed winner, Intense Romance (Intense Focus) is a dual Listed winner, and Ornate (Bahamian Bounty), twice Gr.2-placed.

Michael Tabor´s colours, he later lost form and ended up in South Africa with Mike de Kock.

He returned to Ireland in 2012 to stand at David Stack’s Coolagown Stud in Co. Cork, covering National Hunt mares, and his most recent fee is recorded as €2,000. However, earlier this year he was acquired by Romanian national Irina Vladuca-Marghiloman, who explained: “It is my intention to revitalise the Romanian Thoroughbred breeding industry and continue the work of my uncle, who was the first to import thoroughbreds into the country more than a century ago.”

Although Frozen Fire has hardly set the world alight so far, his pedigree, being inbred 3x3 to Northern Dancer, seems certain to make him a valuable asset in his new country. He arrived in Romania in April after an arduous six-day journey from Ireland, including two days under armed escort through the dangerous Carpathian Mountains.

Initially he was leased free of charge by Mme Vladuca-Marghiloman to a national stud, which has 16 Thoroughbred mares, and is now at a private stud near Bucharest while the results of that stint are evaluated. DCS

KIEREN FALLON BACK IN THE PLATEKieren Fallon, 54, one of the outstanding and most controversial jockeys of recent years, is set to return to the saddle in a “legends” race for retired jockeys at Baden-Baden on Saturday. He rides Griffone, one of two runners saddled by his compatriot John Hillis, who trains in Munich, in a modest mile handicap.

Fallon was Champion Jockey six times and has ridden 2,253 winners, including successes in the Gr.1 Derby, the Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and also the Gr.1 Grosser Preis von Baden on Borgia here in 1997. He retired in 2016, citing depression as the reason, and has since been working as a work rider for Godolphin.

He has by far the highest profile of the jockeys in the race, although Austrian Andreas Suborics, a three-time Champion Jockey in Germany, Frenchman Jean-Pierre Carvalho and Italian Guiseppe Scardino, at 61 the oldest to take part, can all look back on successful careers. DCS

South African RACING AND BREEDING NEWS

Oh Susanna (Street Cry), pictured winning the 2018 G.1 Met, has been retired from racing and will visit the young stallion Lancaster Bomber.

THIS WEEK’S NEWS

TIME CALLED ON OH SUSANNAOh Susanna, South Africa’s Horse of the Year of 2017-18, has been retired from racing and is scheduled to return to her owner’s Drakenstein Stud and a visit to exciting new stallion Lancaster Bomber.

Also the Champion Three-Year-Old Filly and Middle Distance Horse of 2017-18, the daughter of Street Cry added another accolade when named the Champion Older Mare at the recent Equus Awards ceremony.

Oh Susanna made her final start in the Gr.1 Garden Province Stakes on Durban July day and, although she failed to go out in a blaze of glory, she was not disgraced when a length second to newly-crowned Champion Three-Year-Old filly Celtic Sea (Captain Al).

Her finest effort came in the 2018 Gr.1 Met, where she downed an elite weight-for-age field to become the first three-year-old filly in over a century to win the Cape’s flagship race. Also successful in the Gr.1 Woolavington 2000, two renewals of the Gr.1 Paddock Stakes and the Gr.2 Tibouchina Stakes, the multiple champion retires to the paddocks with earnings of just under R5.6m.

She was trained throughout her career by Justin Snaith and he described Oh Susanna as “a tough and aggressive horse, the type you want to take on the boys with, because she’s got the right attitude.”

Drakenstein owner Gaynor Rupert also had news of Oh Susanna’s dam Sharp Susan (Touch Gold), who is based in the UK, “Sharp Susan produced a colt by Frankel and is back in foal, this time to Dubawi,” he said.

An American Gr.2 and Gr.3 winner and third in Belmont’s Gr.1 Garden City Stakes, Sharp Susan made the move from Australia to England after foaling a Fastnet Rock filly in 2016. She is also the dam of a yearling filly by Galileo.

VAN ZYL STRIKES IT RICHAs reported in last week’s EBN, sons of Silvano and Dynasty shared the R800,000 top price at last week’s National 2YO Sale and both are destined for the stables of Summerveld trainer Gavin van Zyl.

The Silvano colt Silver Star Dust, a full-brother to Oaks Trial second Our Shining Star and a half-brother to dual Stakes winner Gimme The Stars (Gimmethegreenlight), is out of the Jet Master mare Cosmic Jet, who is a full-sister to Gr.1 winner Love Is In The Air. Significantly, the colt is bred on the same cross as Champion Three-Year-Old Hawwaam.

The Dynasty colt, purchased from Cheveley Stud and a full-brother to former Champion Three-Year-Old Filly Bela-Bela, boasted a catalogue page entirely filled by the achievements of his dam, Mystic Spring. In addition to Bela-Bela, this broodmare extraordinaire also produced the ill-fated champion Rabiya, the Graded Stakes winners Secret Captain, Secret Of Victoria and Spring Lilac, as well as the Listed Stakes winners Touch The Sky and Rafiya.

SOUTH AFRICA RACING & BREEDING NEWS ~ CONTINUED

The Dynasty colt out of Mystic Spring, a full-brother to former Champion Three-Year-Old Filly Bela-Bela, who is set to join Summerveld trainer Gavin van Zyl.

Described by Cheveley Stud’s Vaughan Koster as “too immature to go to the National Yearling Sale,” the grey was a standout at the 2YO Sale, despite being a bit on the small side. That was of no concern to Van Zyl, who remarked: “The whole family are not big and he will grow. He has a lot of quality and a beautiful head and eye.”

WYLIE HALL TRIO SPREADING THEIR WINGSCheveley Stud’s young resident stallion Wylie Hall has made a pleasing start to his stud career, to the extent that three winners from his first-crop have been sold to overseas interests.

Bound for Hong Kong is Twilight Moon, who became his young sire’s first Stakes winner when sharing the spoils in the Listed Storm Bird Stakes and following up in the Gr.3 Protea Stakes.

De La Cruz, successful in three of five starts, would also have been Hong Kong bound, but for having failed the vet test. He is going to Mauritius, as is the one-time winner Poinciana.

While their departure is a loss, Wylie Hall’s budding reputation should continue to grow, especially as his progeny look set to come into their own at three. The handsome son of Redoute’s Choice only matured at three and earned his Gr.1 spurs with a fine victory in the SA Derby, won the Gr.1 Presidents Champions Challenge at five and will take his place in the history books as a controversial loser of the 2014 Gr.1 Vodacom Durban July.

WORLD RADAR NOW TWO FOR TWOSoft Falling Rain filly World Radar, who made the headlines when given a rare three-digit figure of 105 after her runaway debut victory, proved she is a filly going places with an equally impressive victory on the Fairview polytrack.

Trained by Allan Greeff, the Wilgerbosdrift colour bearer, who bolted up by almost seven lengths first time out on 26th July, made the switch from turf to polytrack with aplomb. Backed well into the red, she was always prominent and came home unchallenged to score by an impressive three and a quarter lengths, also over 1200m.

A half-sister to Listed Champion Juvenile Cup winner Kimberley Star (Ideal World), Mary Slack’s homebred is the third winner from as many runners out of Advance Warning (Strike Smartly).

The mare is a full-sister to the Gr.2 and Gr.3 winner Prestic, whose tally of Gr.1 placings includes a second in the Gr.1 Empress Club Stakes and third in the Gr.1 Garden Province Stakes.

BREEDING NEWSWith the start of the covering season looming on 1st September, breeders in search of the most suitable mates for their broodmares have an array of exciting new and almost new sires at their disposal.

First-season stallions never fail to grab the imagination and those set to embark on their new careers include the Gr.1 Tattersalls Gold Cup hero Lancaster Bomber. He is by the fast-emerging sire of sires War Front, as is Wilgerbosdrift newcomer Fire Away, a multiple Stakes winner and a grandson of undefeated champion and Broodmare of the Year Personal Ensign.

Mauritzfontein Stud will welcome Japanese Champion Juvenile Danon Platina, the first son of recently-deceased Deep Impact to stand in South Africa, while two accomplished additions to the KwaZulu-Natal stallion ranks are Hat Puntano and New Predator. The former, a dual Gr.1 juvenile winner in his birth country Argentina and a subsequent Gr.2 winner in South Africa, joins the stallion roster at Summerhill Stud. Like Danon Platina, he is a grandson of Sunday Silence and is by his champion son Hat Trick. Just down the road from the multiple Champion Breeders is Bush Hill Stud, which will be home to New Predator, a multiple Gr.1-placed, Gr.2 winner by New Approach.

Nothing quite lives up to welcoming the first foals of a stallion, and this season, the wait is over for former Coolmore shuttler Canford Cliffs, dual Gr.1 winner Rabada (Brave Tin Soldier), Gr.1-winning sprinter Mustaaqeem (Redoute’s Choice), Erupt, a dual Gr.1 winner by Dubawi, the Gr.1-placed Graded Stakes winners Royal Mo (Uncle Mo) and Wings Of Desire (Pivotal) and Cape Guineas second Gold Standard (Trippi).

Third-season sires with their first yearlings destined for the 2020 sales are Gr.1 winner Red Ray (Western Winter), Cape Guineas hero William Longsword (Captain Al), Mustaaqeem’s Gr.1-winning full-brother Rafeef (Redoute’s Choice), Gr.1 winner Admiral Kitten (Kitten’s Joy), Moofeed, a rare Gr.3-winning sprinter by Duke Of Marmalade, and Australian Gr.1 winner The United States (Galileo), whose full-sister Hermosa won this season’s Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas and Gr.1 1,000 Guineas.

With no runners yet to show his powers and his racing career a fading memory, the fourth season at stud is a dreaded one for any stallion, and this group includes Dynasty’s Gr.1-winning sons Act Of War, Legislate and Futura, Coup De Grace (Tapit), the Galileo pair Global View and Flying The Flag, Triple Crown hero Louis The King (Black Minnaloushe) and the Gr.1-winning juvenile Willow Magic (Dubawi).

GERMAN THOROUGHBRED NEWS

PRESENTED BY

EMERITA SPARKLES IN SPARKASSENPREISOnly six days ahead of the Grosse Woche Baden-Baden, the top meeting of the year in Germany, with nine Stakes races on offer and the internationally acclaimed BBAG Yearling Sales, Dusseldorf and Hannover provided opportunities to collect black type. Unlike many times in recent months the German-trained and bred horses prevailed. At Dusseldorf, Emerita (Areion) got up comfortably to claim the Listed Grosser Sparkassenpreis over 1400m, ahead of British raider Gypsy Spirit (Gregorian) and K Club (Kodiac).

Trained by Hans-Jurgen Groschel and homebred by Gestut Paschberg, Emerita was runner-up in a Listed mile race in Hannover in May, and fourth at Gr.3 level in July, making this her first black-type win. She is the second foal out of the winner Edmee (Green Tune), who is a half-sister to three winners out of the placed Estelle (Emarati). It’s still undecided if the four-year-old Emerita will stay in training next year, as Paschberg still owns the dam and full-sister who was born this year.

THE COMEBACK OF WELTSTARThe Listed Grosser Preis der Deutschen Bank over 2200m at Hannover saw the welcome return of Derby hero Weltstar (Soldier Hollow), who hasn’t raced since his triumph in Hamburg in July a year ago. In a small field of five Weltstar managed only third place, but his trainer Markus Klug was still pleased with his run: “I’m happy that he is back after a break of 13 months and a heavy injury.” There are no immediate plans with the homebred Rottgen colt, his team wants to watch how he is recovering.

The race was won by the Andreas Wohler-trained Ladykiller (Kamsin) ahead of Edith (It’s Gino), who ran a solid race in defeat. The three-year-old, owned by Rennstall Gestut Hachtsee, had a late start to the season when fifth of five in Cologne at the end of last month. As a youngster he won his debut and was runner-up in the BBAG Sales Race at Munich. “He is still very green“, his rider Bauyrzhan Murzabayev said. “That’s why I decided to make all the running.”

Ladykiller, bred by Gestüt Karlshof, is the second foal and first winner out of the Gr.2 victrix Lady Jacamira (Lord Of England). She is the best of five winners out of Latley (Sillery).

GROSSE WOCHE BADEN-BADEN STARTSTomorrow the summer meeting starts in Iffezheim on the doorstep of the Black Forest. It opens with a strongly contested Gr.3 Preis der Sparkassen Finanzgruppe over 2000m – with last year’s winner Wai Key Star (Soldier Hollow) facing competition from the likes of Royal Youmzain (Youmzain), runner-up twice at Gr.2 level this season, Be My Sheriff (Lawman), another Gr.2 runner-up, and Itobo (Areion), a Gr.2 winner.

There are three representatives from the Classic generation, including the only filly in the field, Ismene. The Schlenderhan/

Ullmann homebred daughter of Tertullian was well fancied in the Gr.1 Preis der Diana, but unseated her rider at the start. With plenty of weight in hand, she must be respected, especially as her team decided to run tomorrow, rather than in the Listed Coolmore Stud Baden-Baden Cup next Wednesday for fillies and mares only.

MOSER WITH TWO CHANCESThe feature race on Sunday is Germany’s top sprint event, the Gr.2 Goldene Peitsche. Dominik Moser holds a strong hand with Waldpfad (Shamardal), a Gr.3 winner in England and Germany, and the three-year-old Namos (Medicean), who scored in the Gr.3 Silberne Peitsche this spring. Both are bred by Gestut Brummerhof. The Ed Walker-trained Gr.3 winner Royal Intervention (Exceed And Excel) might spoil the party, however.

BBAG SALES RACES ON THE WEEKENDThe support card for the first two days of racing at the Grosse Woche is traditionally provided by the BBAG. Tomorrow, the Classic generation will test its mettle over the Derby distance in the Preis der BBAG Jahrlingsauktion, while on Sunday it’s a big payday for the two-year-old fillies with more than €100,000 in prize money on offer.

This all should be incentive enough to come to the BBAG Yearling Sales a week today. Around 220 yearlings will go through the ring, including five siblings of Gr.1 winners, such as the full-brother to Iquitos (Adlerflug) and the half-brother to Gr.1 Preis der Diana heroine Diamanta (Maxios). PETER MUHLFEIT

Baden-Baden will feature the Grosse Woche, Germany’s top meeting of the year, in just six days’ time to coincide with the BBAG Yearling Sales. © Marc Ruehl

THOROUGHBRED SALES GUIDE

LOT 432 – GOFFS UK PREMIER YEARLING SALE bay colt by Acclamation ex Midnight Oasis

Midnight Oasis (Oasis Dream) showed just about

nothing in seven starts on the track, reaching a career-

high rating of 49, but she has fared much better as a

broodmare, producing five winners from six runners to

date, and the odd one out Funny Little Ways (Gutaifan)

could follow suit, having contested a pair of hot maidens

at Naas and the Curragh so far.

Among Midnight Oasis’s five winners are the

107-rated George Bowen, an eight-time winner over 6f

by Acclamation’s son Dark Angel, the 104-rated Mr Win

(Intikhab), successful five times from 6f-7f, and the

90-rated Mutahaady (Elzaam), a five-time winner from

6f-1m. Midnight Oasis is herself a half-sister to the Gr.3

Ballyogan Stakes winner and 102-rated Miss Anabaa

(Anabaa), the 105-rated five-time winner Move It

(Cadeaux Genereux) and the 104-rated six-time winner

Out After Dark (Cadeaux Genereux). She is also a half-

sister to the lowly 65-rated Mina (Selkirk), who

nevertheless went on to produce the 102-rated Listed

Sweet Mimosa Stakes winner Minalisa (Oasis Dream)

and the 90-rated Miss Diva to this colt’s sire Acclamation,

as well as the 40-rated Midnight M (Green Desert), who

is the dam of the 107-rated Gr.3 Prix du Bois winner Fly

On The Night by another son of Acclamation in Equiano.

The second dam, the winner Midnight Shift (Night

Shift), is a half-sister to the European Champion Three-

Year-Old Sprinter, Gr.1 July Cup winner and ill-fated sire

Owington (Green Desert).

PAT SMULLEN BOWS OUT OF THE CHAMPIONS RACEDue to a health setback, Pat Smullen has withdrawn from the Champions Race for Cancer Trials Ireland on Sunday, 15th September.

Smullen reported: “Unfortunately I’ve had a setback with my health and have to undergo chemotherapy. On advice from my medical team I am unable to ride in the Champions Race for Cancer Trials Ireland. I am bitterly disappointed not to be able to take part in this very special race. I was really looking forward to riding against such a brilliant group of champions, especially at The Curragh.

“I’ve spoken to Horse Racing Ireland who are helping me with the fundraising activity over Longines Irish Champions Weekend and I am more determined than ever that the fundraising activity goes ahead, as pancreatic cancer needs more awareness now than ever before,” said the nine-time Champion Jockey.

Nine Champions remain in the race, with A P McCoy, Ruby Walsh, Charlie Swan, Johnny Murtagh, Richard Hughes, Paul Carberry, Joseph O’Brien, Kieren Fallon and Ted Durcan all raising funds for the good cause.
