ROSEHILL DOUBLE FOR FASTNET ROCKCoolmore’s reverse shuttler Fastnet Rock landed a Gr.2 double at Rosehill yesterday. The sire’s first victory came courtesy of Unforgotten, who defeated the boys in the three-year-old only Phar Lap Stakes over 1500m. Racing in last for much of the race, she was pulled wide around runners in the home straight and picked up strongly in the closing stages to get up on the line to defeat Holy Snow, a son of the Danehill stallion. The winning margin was a short head, with two and three-quarter lengths back to Hiyaam (High Chaparral).

This was a fourth victory and first at stakes level for the Roncon-bred NZB Premier Yearling Sale graduate, who last time out finished last in the Gr.1 Surround Stakes two weeks ago.

She is a full-sister to the Listed Armadillo Stakes third Special Memories, out of a Galileo half-sister to the Gr.1 Ramona Handicap and Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches scorer Matiara (Bering), the Gr.2 Prix du Muget winner and sire Marathon (Diesis), the Gr.2 Richmond Stakes winner and sire Pyrus (Mr Prospector) and the Listed Prix du Ranelagh scorer Precious Ring (Bering), as well as Mypreciousprospect (Mr Prospector; grandam of the Gr.1 Prix Marcel Boussac heroine Indonesienne).

WINTER LIGHTS UP ABU DHABI IN CHAMPIONSHIPThe Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club staged their final fixture of the season yesterday, when the main thoroughbred contest was the Gr.3 Abu Dhabi Championship over 2200m on turf and won for the second time by Mike de Kock. Victorious in 2009 with Mr Brock, it was Light The Lights who landed a cosy victory. The son of Western Winter raced in midfield, while Jupiter Light (Lonhro) went off in front. The winner made his move stylishly from 500m out and came to take the lead with 150m to run. From there on in he was always holding his 13 rivals, coming home the three-quarter length winner. Janszoon (Dubawi) stayed on strongly for second, two lengths ahead of Sharpalo (Shamardal).

A more than useful sort in his native South Africa, where his career high came when taking the Gr.2 Peninsula Handicap, before running fourth to Smart Call in the Gr.1 Met. Moved to de Kock from Glen Kotzen after, he won the Listed (then) Singspiel Stakes on his Dubai debut last January, before running second in the Gr.2 Al Rashidiya. This year in four previous Dubai starts he has won once, in a handicap at Meydan in Janaury.

Bred by Hallmark Thoroughbred and a graduate of the BSA Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, he is a full-brother to the three-time Zimbabwe Listed scorer Rock The Country. Amongst the six-year-old’s half-siblings are the Gr.1 Woolavington 2000 Stakes and Gr.1 Cape Fillies Guineas scorer In The Fast Lane (Jet

heels to win by a cosy half-length from Cool Chap (High Chaparral), with three quarters of a length back to Hellova Street (Helike).

This was a seventh victory for the gelding, who landed the Gr.1 Makybe Diva Stakes last September and won the Gr.1 Australian Cup last March.

Bred in New Zealand by Jomara Bloodstock Ltd, Humidor is the best runner from four winners out of the three-time New Zealand winner Zalika, a Zabeel half-sister to the three-time Macau Listed winner Hostwin Donatello (Show A Heart). The third dam is the European Three-Year-Old Champion Habibti (Habitat), winner of the Gr.1 Prix de l’Abbaye and Gr.1 King’s Stand Stakes.

EPAULETTE GAINS SECOND GROUP WINNERShadwell Stud Australasia Ltd homebred Khulaasa broke her maiden in the best way possible, taking the Gr.3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes at Flemington on her third start.

Second on New Year’s Day at the course and then runner-up in the Listed Talindert Stakes last month, again at the Victoria track, the two-year-old filly raced to the outside of runners over the straight 1200m. Having travelled smoothly, she hit the front 300m out and had to prove tough in front, fending off the late lunge of Krone (Eurozone) by a short head, with a half-length back to Cristal Eyes (All Too Hard).

The David & Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig trainee is the second Group winner from the first Australian crop by Epaulette, also responsible for the Gr.3 B J McLachlan Stakes winner Meryl.

Khulaasa is a half-sister to the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes winner Bubula (Shamardal), out of the dual Australian Listed

Eighty minutes later, the four-year-old Comin’ Through secured the double for the sire, winning the 1500m Ajax Stakes by a head and a short head from the Irish-breds Tom Melbourne (Dylan Thomas) and Radipole (Rock Of Gibraltar). Having raced in midfield, the winner was ridden on turning for home, but picked up well around horses to take the lead with 100m to run and fended off his challengers in a tight finish.

Trained by Chris Waller, the gelding was gaining a third Group victory, having taken the Gr.3 Carbine Club Stakes in October 2016 and the Gr.3 Bill Ritchie Handicap in September last year. This was a first run since being gelded and last year’s Gr.1 Randwick Guineas third looks set for an assault on the Gr.1 Doncaster Mile next month.

Bred by Go Bloodstock and retained by his breeder Sir Owen Glenn, Comin’ Through is a half-brother to the four-time Australian Gr.1 winner and sire Criterion (Sebring), the Gr.2 QTC Cup winner Varenna Miss (Redoute’s Choice) and the Listed James HB Carr Stakes winner Silently (Anabaa; dam of the Gr.3 Graham Beck Stakes winner Muwaary). They are out of the Gr.3 Research Stakes winner Mica’s Pride (Bite The Bullet).

BLAMEY STAKES WIN FOR HUMIDOROver at Flemington, Teofilo’s son Humidor returned to form in the Gr.2 Blamey Stakes over 1600m and put himself in contention for the Gr.1 Doncaster Mile. The five-year-old, making his second start since running 19th in the Gr.1 Melbourne Cup, having been second to Winx in the Gr.1 Cox Plate the time before, came round his four rivals in the home straight, picked up well late on under hands and

GENTILDONNA’S FULL-SISTER MAKES THE PERFECT STARTVirtus (Deep Impact), the full-sister to the Japanese Champion Gentildonna, could not have been more impressive on her debut yesterday in a fillies’ maiden over 1800m at Hanshin. The pocket-sized filly (398kg), who was patiently ridden by Christophe-Patrice Lemaire, had a wall of rivals in front of her entering the final 400m, but, switched to the outside, sprinted home to score by one big length from Kurino Ariel (Deep Impact). Virtus, owned by Sunday Racing and trained by Sei Ishizaka, just like her seven-time Gr.1-winning big sister, clocked the last 600m in 34.3, one second faster than her runner-up.

Their dam, Donna Blini (Bertolino), the Gr.1 Cheveley Park Stakes winner of 2006, has had some bad luck since foaling Gentildonna. She has delivered just the one winner, the colt Legende (Deep Impact), from four foals between Gentildonna and Virtus. The 15-year-old broodmare has a two-year-old full-sister to Gentildonna and a yearling full-sister, purchased for ¥370m last year at the JRHA Select Foal Sale by new owners DMM.com. Gentildonna herself has a two-year-old filly and a yearling colt, both by King Kamehameha, and visited Maurice last year.

AUVRAY ALL SET FOR TANCREDThe French-bred Auvray is on target for the Gr.1 Tancred Stakes in two weeks after a dominant victory in the Gr.3 Sky High Stakes at Flemington over 200m. The seven-year-old, who landed the Gr.2 Prix Chaudenay and Gr.3 Prix de Lutece when trained by Elie Lellouche, raced in midfield. Brought down the outside of rivals, he picked up stylishly to take the lead before the 100m marker and drew clear to a length and a quarter win. Second home was the Irish-bred Libran (Lawman), who was a short head in front of Mackintosh (Pins).

Having won the Chaudenay on 4th October 2014, Auvray sold to Michael Wallace for €800,000 at Arqana’s Arc de Triomphe Sale that evening and was exported to Australia. He raced 14 times in his adopted country before winning and now won a pair of Gr.3s in eight starts since. The gelding landed the Gr.3 Colin Stephen Quality in September.

Bred by Franklin Finance and Elisabeth Vidal, Auvray comes from the first crop by his sire Le Havre and is out of the In The Wings mare Ameyrah. This is the further family of the Champion German Three-Year-Old and dual Gr.1-winning sire Adlerflug and the Gr.2 Mehl Mulhens Rennen winner Knife Edge.

NATIONAL VICTORY FOR ERHAAB’S REGAL FLOWThe Listed Midlands Grand National, as ever, turned into a true test of stamina and the four mile two furlong chase, run on heavy ground at Uttoxeter, was won by Regal Flow, trained by a stalwart of the West Country National Hunt fraternity in Bob Buckler. The 11-year-old winner provided a first major success for conditional Sean Houlihan.

A rare son of Gr.1 Derby scorer Erhaab was held up early as The Artful Cobbler (Saint Des Saints) set what appeared to be a searching gallop out in front. Uttoxeter specialist Milansbar (Milan) took over just after halfway, with the winner moving into second going out onto the final circuit. He jumped to the front at the third last and proved resolute in front, going clear before two out. He came home the 10 length winner from the gallant Milansbar, also second two years ago, with four and a half lengths back to Ballymalin (Presenting).

The Heather Dunn homebred gelding came into this in fine form, having landed an extended three and a half mile chase at Taunton on Monday. He had also been victorious at Wincanton on Boxing Day, before running second in at Hereford in January. This was a seventh victory in total from 35 starts.

He is one of five foals, all winners, out of the three-time jumps winner Flow (Over The River), a daughter of the unraced Royal Highway mare Thrupence. This is the further family of the high-class Egypt Mill Prince, a Listed winner over both hurdles and fences, the Gr.2 Slaney Novices’ Hurdle winner Toofarback and the Conyngham Cup winner Ceolbridge Baby.
