It is a particular honor, during this diffi-cult year, for the Ireland Fund of Japan to welcome our sponsors and guests to the Emerald Ball.

We would also like to extend our thanks to our guest of honor Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado.

This organization is dedicated to raising funds in support of arts and culture as well as education and community development both in Japan and Ireland and, where pos-sible, to build upon existing links in these areas between the two countries.

Our secondary school exchange program has been a great success since 2006; we have continued it through 2007 and 2008. All students have enjoyed the program immensely, and it has been a learning ex-perience for all involved, in many ways. Our intention is to continue with this extremely beneficial cultural exercise for many years to come. These exchanges are developing an ever-deepening friendship between Irish and Japanese people.

The parades held in Japan during the St. Patrick’s Day festival period continue to be a major focus. The Ireland Fund will

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

continue to support these events to the best of our ability. Nine cities in Japan will host St. Patrick’s Day parades this year!

The Ireland Fund is also keen to recog-nize requirements for charitable contribu-tions in Japan. In this regard, the fund is involved in a program supporting home-less people in Osaka. Fr. Takayama, of the Jesuit Order, is feeding over 800 people on a weekly basis. We are thankful to Fr. Takayama for his great work.

Our work can only continue as a result of your generous support. We need this sup-port to continue but we do not take it for granted. We know it is the keystone of our existence. We must earn that support with responsible professional behaviour and delivery of worthwhile initiatives.

The Emerald Ball this evening takes place due to the efforts of the Chairperson, Andrew Nolan and his fellow committee members. I would like to congratulate all those involved for making this evening such an enjoyable event.

Thank you all for coming and sharing this special evening with us.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
