Sustainable power management for customers

Sustainability is integral to Eaton’s mission of providing efficient, reliable and safe power management solutions to our customers.

Eaton’s power management solutions help customers in addressing their most pressing needs of improving energy efficiency, increasing uptime in critical operations, reducing costs and protecting people, property and environment.

Eaton has been organizing Technology Days globally for customers and focus segments. Technology Days are part of a strategic Eaton initiative that involves holding a series of focused events to reach out to customers, end users , partners and influencers from major growth regions and key industry segments. Technology Days have proved to be an ideal platform for Eaton to reach out to our customers across the regions and demonstrate the breadth and scale of our products and solutions we offer to various segments. These events enable effective interactions around managing power more efficiently, reliably, safely and sustainably.

In 2014, Eaton hosted 10 Technology Days across India to further our commitment to helping customers achieve sustainable power management. Through these Technology Days we reached out to 1,157 key industry leaders, decision makers and influencers from 270 companies. Thirty-seven seminars on varied themes of efficient, reliable, safe and sustainable power management were conducted as part of these Technology Days. These seminars facilitated discussions between subject matter experts from Eaton and key representatives from our focus industry segments on emerging trends and Eaton’s industry leading solutions to support them.

Sustainable by design

In the past few decades, rapid infrastructure upgradation and urbanization has led to the emergence of certain megatrends such as rising energy costs, increasing demand for natural resources and climate change; which are global changes in our economies and our lifestyles.

Eaton understands these megatrends and our focus is on developing and introducing new technologies, products and solutions which will help in conserving natural resources, shrink the carbon footprints and reduce the environmental impact of everyday life. Technologists and engineers at the Eaton India Engineering Center (EIEC) design and develop products which are energy efficient, help in reducing the carbon footprint and comply with various regulations, thus addressing the challenge posed by some of the megatrends.

Eaton India Engineering Center (EIEC) is Eaton’s largest integrated, multidisciplinary research, development and engineering center. The central purpose of EIEC is to drive organic growth by providing engineering solutions throughout the product life cycle of Eaton’s diverse product portfolio. EIEC offers engineering solutions through its capabilities in Sustaining Engineering, Product Development, Centers of Excellence (CoE) and Research and Technology.

A dedicated team for Sustainability at EIEC provides Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Design for Environment (DfE) solutions to Eaton businesses. The team helps in quantifying the environmental footprint that is; the carbon and energy footprint and impact on human health and ecosystem of Eaton products.

Building a sustainable business

Extending sustainable practices to suppliers

Eaton recognizes the significance of the supply chain in our own sustainability performance, and we are actively engaged in working with our suppliers to manage emissions and improve safety and efficiency.

Eaton expects all suppliers to offer a safe work environment for employees, prevent pollution, protect the environment, and commit to continuous improvement in Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) performance.

We select our suppliers based on many factors, including price, quality, corporate citizenship, global laws, sustainability, innovation and adherence to Eaton’s supplier excellence guide and ethics policy.

All Eaton suppliers in India sign our ‘Supplier Code of Conduct’ and our ‘Supplier Ethics Letter’ - which clearly states the EHS related expectations with respect to labour, health, safety and environment. Additionally, every supplier is provided with our ‘Supplier Excellence Manual’, which also covers Eaton’s EHS expectations.

The purpose of the Supplier Excellence Manual is to communicate to our suppliers the expectations and core set of tools, processes and systems that are to be used in the manufacture, design and development of parts, products and services supplied to Eaton and our business locations.

In 2014, Eaton Industries Manufacturing GmbH (EIMG) India conducted ‘supplier survey’ to capture the voice of suppliers on three parameters - the pre-award phase; the project implementation phase; and the post-project implementation phase. EIMG received encouraging feedback from suppliers for its strong focus on ethics, professionalism and on delivering quality.

An important outcome from the survey was a need to keep our suppliers updated on activities and initiatives at Eaton. Therefore, we introduced quarterly newsletter sent to 40 Indian global sourcing strategic suppliers. This newsletter captures updates on Eaton businesses, new initiatives, product launches and financial results.

Driving continuous improvement

Eaton is an integrated operating company and the Eaton Business System (EBS) is the embodiment of this philosophy. EBS is based on our belief in standard processes and how these are implemented across Eaton locations. It ensures that we transfer best practices and learnings around the organization and it also ensures continuous improvement.

As a learning organization encourages all employees to engage in continuous improvement and achieve higher performance year-on-year. These improvement initiatives are applied in all areas of manufacturing and business processes leading to improved safety, quality, delivery, efficiency and costs.

In 2014, over 70 projects were completed by employees in India with one being recognized by Eaton with our continuous Improvement (CI) award both for the Asia Pacific region and globally. Project CAPS (Compliance, Audit and Payment term Standardization) brought improvements to our free cash flow while ensuring compliance to the requirements of Restricted Party Screening and Due Diligence. The project was deployed on pilot ledgers and was being deployed across the region towards the end of 2014.

Embracing and practicing a culture of sustainabilityWe are committed to being a global leader in safeguarding the health and safety of our employees and protecting the environment.

ZEROI choose

Employee safety

We believe that the safety and health of our employees is of the highest importance. We seek to prevent accidents, injuries and occupational illnesses and promote healthy and safe lifestyles for our employees and their families.

Compliance

We have a worldwide Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) governance structure of people, policies and processes, designed to ensure compliance, responsible EHS practices and proactive incident reporting and response. This structure applies to both our operations and to the products we make. We strive to meet or exceed regulatory requirements, consistent with Eaton’s commitment to respect and obey the laws, rules and regulations applying to our businesses around the world. We work to create a ‘zero incident’ culture and to continuously improve our EHS performance. We use qualified and independent third parties to assess and verify our EHS performance metrics.

Environmental stewardship

Our commitment to the environment goes beyond legal compliance and extends to actions intended to reduce our environmental footprint through our operations, products and supply chain. In our operations, this commitment is reflected in our efforts to prevent pollution, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and conserve natural resources efforts incorporated into supply-chain commitments. We also design our products for the environment (considering raw materials and energy efficiency) and incorporate life-cycle impact into their design. Together, these efforts support Eaton’s overall sustainable business model.

• Efforts to reduce GHG emissions in 2014 include two initiatives taken at the Pimpri and Ahmednagar plants of Eaton. At the Hydraulics plant in Pimpri, conventional fittings were replaced with Eaton LED fittings. Energy savings of 3499.2 kwh/ month have been achieved with a cost savings of upto Rs. 30,000/ month

• Efforts to reduce landfill waste in 2014 include recycling metal waste at Ranjangaon and Ahmednagar plants. At these plants metal waste has been given to an external vendor for reuse since 2014. Earlier, the waste used was given at Government authorized waste disposal facilities. Eaton was paying to dispose the waste and it was getting added to the landfill waste

Strengthening our environment, health and safety (EHS) performance

In line with Eaton’s commitment to environmental sustainability, Eaton’s APAC region hosted a competition with a clear emphasis on sharing and recognizing best practices in the areas of GHG emissions, landfilled waste management and reduction in water usage, along with two other categories, namely, ergonomics and machine guarding. The contest saw a total of 28 entries from various sites across the region. All participating teams presented the best practices introduced and implemented at their respective sites. Under each category, the entries were evaluated and selected against a specific set of pre-decided criteria. The selection panel comprised of all APAC EHS sub-regional managers. Of the five categories of awards declared, teams from India emerged as winners in three. The winning teams from India were:

At Pimpri, the team had substituted their old cleaning media with new one (ultrasonic cleaning machine), reducing the frequency of water replacement from twice to once a month. They also installed an air vent at the main incoming meter, which reduced false metering due to air flow. Additionally, the installation of low- flow aerator faucets on 28 taps (especially in the canteen utensil washing area and hand wash basins); prevention of water overflow from water storage tanks; periodic monitoring for leakages from taps, pipelines and tanks; and shutting off the main inlet valve over weekends; all reduced the average monthly water consumption of 1577 cu.m.in first half of 2014 to 866 cu.m. in the latter half of the year.

The Ahmednagar plant in 2014 introduced extensive guarding such as of its machines centreless grinding, CNC turning and seat grinding. This included innovative guarding on extrusion forging presses and upset forging presses. The initiative resulted in considerable cost savings.

At the Pondicherry plant, apart from introducing ergonomically designed workstations and trolleys, the plant replaced older sand filling machines with air-free rotary sand filling machines, which resulted in elimination of frequent body twisting of operator, elimination of compressed air use, reduction in noise, and better productivity. Three sand filling machines were combined into one, resulting in the replacement of manual sand loading with auto sand suction, eliminating improper operator posture and reducing noise. In addition, designing the combiner box assembly line on the single piece product flow principle helped eliminate manual material handling with the use of roller conveyer.

Building a sustainable workforceEducating and empowering our employees

Learning is a competitive advantage for Eaton - and for its employees. Learning enables excellence that helps our company stay ahead in the marketplace. It also allows employees to develop their individual skills. We leverage the 70:20:10 Eaton Learning Model based on the findings that 70% of employee development happens while on the job, 20% happens through formal/ informal coaching and mentoring and 10% occurs through training and reading.

Eaton University enables this culture of learning by providing solutions that are just in time, just enough and just tailored for the employee. Our approach accepts that all employees are all unique, prefer different learning methods and have varied professional and educational goals. Eaton University’s wide range of learning resources include classroom training, online learning courses and collaborative learning through Eaton Resource Groups and specialized Functional Colleges. The Eaton University Library supports continuous learning and improved performance of Eaton employees across groups and cultures.

Eaton’s New Manager Assimilation program is aimed at developing a strong and positive working relationship between the team and its new manager. Eaton believes that the effectiveness of this relationship depends on the understanding that is shared between the team and the manager. Likewise, the Manager Skill Augmentation program equips newly hired and promoted managers to leverage Eaton’s human resources processes and tools to build capability within their teams.

To help employees get a first-hand experience in a different function or department so they can make informed career choices, a program – STEP (Short Term Exposure Program) was launched in 2014. This program provided employees an opportunity to work part-time or full-time on a project of their choice for a period of two to six months. During this time, the employee continues to be a part of their original team.

Various early talent development programs such as; the India Talent Development Forum, Talent Forum and Talent Accelerator Program at Eaton use a blended learning approach including senior leadership involvement and action learning projects.

The leadership team at Eaton is highly active and involved in certain training programs that are executed by the Eaton University team.

Eaton University India launched nine training programs in 2014 to cater to the training needs at various levels of the organization hierarchy. The training needs were collected through the annual training survey and inputs from human resources and business leaders.

At our Vehicle Group plant in Ranjangaon and Hydraulics plant in Pimpri, we have conducted trainings such as the Shift Leader Excellence Program, which has helped in developing our front line leadership. We have deployed manufacturing functional competencies for all salaried employees in our operations. This has helped them to better understand their roles and become aligned with the requirements of their roles. We have conducted many ISO certified trainings by internal and external trainers for the shopfloor employees to enhance their technical capabilities.

A lot of emphasis is given on constantly developing the knowledge base of our employees at each location. This is done with an aim to build subject matter experts within Eaton. Therefore, at the Supply Chain Management Shared Services Center, 20 trainings on various subjects such as material, purchasing, supplier quality, supplier development and governance were conducted by subject matter experts for their teams.

Building a sustainable workforce

20 trainings were imparted by Eaton’s senior leaders

The dual career paths at EIEC have helped sharpen the technology acumen and develop the organizational leadership capabilities of our employees. To create high potential talent pipeline within the organization; campus hires are identified and groomed through the Eaton Technology Leadership Program (ETLP). A comprehensive learning framework has been developed to provide technical and leadership courses as part of year-round training and development framework. The training calendar is formalized to include the behavioral and technical trainings.

Eaton’s ‘Education Assistance Program’ is aimed at encouraging and guiding its employees to opt for higher education. The program aims to make a conscious shift from distance education to on-site learning through collaboration with some of the most reputed institutions in the field of technology and continuous learning. The EIEC has therefore collaborated with ARAI and VIT, Vellore for M-Tech Powertrain Electronics Course, in which two Eaton employees have enrolled in 2014.

Under the ‘On-Campus Work-Integrated Learning Program’, 47 employees from EIEC completed their higher education in 2014 from BITS, Pilani and other renowned institutes. Eleven employees are pursuing doctorate degrees, out of which four employees are pursuing it in collaboration with IIT-Madras and IIT-Mumbai.

Building a sustainable workforce

Powering employees to live well

Eaton is committed to the well-being of our employees and consistently offers initiatives to enable them to lead a comfortable professional and personal life.

The wellness initiatives at Eaton are built around five pillars – healthy eating, fitness, “Know your Numbers”, managing stress and being tobacco free. Under each of these pillars, initiatives and programs are implemented at all Eaton locations. Health and dental check-ups, consultation with dieticians, webinars on ‘Work-Life Balance’ and ‘Stress Management’, sessions from external speakers on proper diet, healthy eating, exercising and physical activities

were organized. At all Eaton plants, all meals provided to employees are of high nutritional value. At the Chennai plant a team from the Cancer Institute was invited to conduct a session and a medical camp for employees on oral, cervix and breast cancer. The medical camp was extended to the employees’ spouses as well.

Several indoor and outdoor activities (such as trekking) are organized so that the employees can spend time interacting and understanding the importance of staying fit and together make some alterations in their day-to-day lifestyles to stay fit and do well.

Ombuds – an enabler for creating a stress free workplace

Officeof theOmbuds

Eaton’s Office of the Ombuds provides employees with an independent, neutral and confidential resource for identifying and resolving work-related issues and problems.

The Ombuds actively reaches out to employees across all Eaton businesses to reiterate its services and create awareness about the multiple channels provided by Eaton for employees to raise any issues or concerns.

The Ombuds office reached out to 1650 Eaton employees in India in 2014.

In 2014 Ombuds conducted 36 sessions across Eaton locations.

Employees – our biggest evangelists and critics

Employee survey – employees evaluating Eaton

At Eaton, it is not only the employees but the organization as well that is evaluated on its performance pertaining to employee engagement and managerial effectiveness.

We give our employees ownership to build Eaton’s strengths and culture. Our employee survey is conducted globally to gather feedback in order to identify our strengths and opportunities. The survey captures feedback from employees on their experience of Eaton leadership, work group and location. The survey is conducted with the help of a third-party survey administrator and the responses are kept completely confidential.

Eaton’s global employee survey provides us with a structured way to evaluate employee engagement and to solicit ideas on how we can keep improving our workplaces.

In 2014, employees across all Eaton locations in India participated in the survey. The results of this survey showed strong improvements in employee engagement, manager effectiveness and understanding of Eaton’s Code of Ethics.

Inclusion and diversity – an integrated approach

At Eaton, we believe in the power of perspectives and that leveraging diverse perspectives of our employees makes us powerful.

Diversity by itself is not an adequate objective. Diversity becomes an incredible source of strength only when it is empowered by a culture of inclusion. At Eaton, we refer to “inclusion and diversity” in that order. Inclusion is what allows us to harness the full power of the people within our diverse global teams.

In 2014, Eaton globally launched Eaton Resource Groups for inclusion, commonly known as Inclusion ERGs. Inclusion ERGs are a great way for employees to share different perspectives and provide growth and development opportunities. Inclusion ERGs offer both personal and company benefits. They align with business objectives and provide networking opportunities, professional development, mentoring and refinement of competency and skills for employees who actively participate in them.

In India, Eaton has launched two specialized ERGs to focus and address gender and generation related issues and concerns of employees within Eaton in India. These ERGs are WAVE – Women Adding Value at Eaton and ENGAGE – Eaton Next Generation Achieving Goals and Excelling.

During 2014, more than 670 Eaton employees in India have become members of these two ERGs. The purpose and impact of these ERGs was effectively communicated to employees all over India by conducting awareness sessions at each location. Throughout the year the ERGs have conducted various speaker series involving external and internal speakers on subjects such as communication skills, making the career decisions, work-life integration and building competencies. In addition, roundtable discussion were conducted for employees with Eaton leaders at all locations, including the plants.

The employee survey continues to be one of the most reliable channels to obtain employee feedback.

University relations – cultivating local talent

Eaton is collaborating successfully with several prestigious universities and research institutions in India to drive technology development and cultivate local talent. To achieve this objective, we have established strong technology partnership programs with leading institutions such as Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT)-Bombay, IIT- Madras, IIT-Kanpur and College of Engineering, Pune.

In addition, we have played an active role in leveraging these relationships to further our objectives of building stronger communities. Two of the best examples of this endeavor are:

Ignited innovators of India: A state level social entrepreneurship contest hosted in collaboration with the College of Engineering, Pune and the Bhau Institute of Innovation Entrepreneurship & Leadership. In 2014, 1400 students from over 30 colleges across 10 cities in Maharashtra participated in the program. A total of 750 projects were submitted, of which 279 projects were shortlisted for final evaluation. The participants identified areas of social significance that require constant positive change and up-gradation, such as agriculture, education, environment, health and technology.

Garnishing talent: A soft and social skills training program for women engineering students from rural and vernacular backgrounds currently studying at Cummins College of Engineering for Women, Pune. Run in association with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the program impacted

103 women engineers in 2014. The students were from various disciplines, (namely mechanical, instrumentation, computer science, information technology and electronics and telecommunications) and were identified through a defined assessment process. We also work very closely with several industrial training institutes to support employability and skill enhancement of the less privileged sections of the community.

Based on our focus on diversity and our commitment to achieving Excellence through People, we introduced Pratibha - the Eaton Excellence Award, a unique program that encourages multifaceted women engineering talent in India through educational scholarships at both undergraduate as well as post-graduate levels. The scholarship, recognizes exceptional women engineering students in leading engineering institutions in India, assessing them not only on academic excellence but also on the basis of their co-curricular achievements. More than 100 women engineers from four key colleges (IIT Chennai, IIT Kanpur, College of Engineering Pune (COEP) and Cummins) applied for the scholarship award. After an elaborate evaluation process, which considered academics, co-curricular achievements, community service and project evaluation, 12 women engineers were identified for the scholarship in 2014.

At our Vehicle Group manufacturing plant in Ranjangaon, seminars on developing talent for industries were conducted for under graduate students studying science in colleges located in rural areas.

Eaton also offers Board of Apprenticeship and Training (BOAT) hiring programs for Diploma students at most of our plants in India. At the Electrical Sector plant in Pondicherry, we successfully accomplished our target for employing students through the BOAT program. The Pondicherry plant received the Best Employer Award from BOAT Southern Region, and our Vehicle Group plant in Ahmednagar received the award from BOAT Western Region.

Eaton is actively contributing towards building an employable workforce for the industry.

Eaton’s University Relations continually engages with prime institutes in India. In 2014, Eaton successfully inaugurated ‘Eaton Mechatronics Lab’ at Centre for Innovation (CFI)- IIT Madras and ‘Eaton Materials Lab’ at CoEP, Pune.

Building sustainable communities

• Seed to sapling program – At our manufacturing locations in Ranjangaon, Nasik, Ahmednagar, Pimpri and Chennai plantation drives were conducted around ‘World Environment Day’ not only at Eaton premises but also in the localities surrounding our manufacturing facilities We work hand-in-hand with community to achieve environmental sustainability. At the Chennai plant, our employees had distributed saplings in the nearby communities in 2013. To take this novel initiative further, in 2014, our employees distributed packs of organic vermiculture manure.

• E-waste collection drive - To signify the need for having less impact on our environment, employees at the Chennai plant initiated an e-waste collection drive. Our employees not only collected waste at their office and plants, but also collected e-waste from their homes, which was disposed through authorized recyclers. The revenue received was spent for community services. To create awareness about e-waste and its effective disposal, an informative session was also conducted for the employees

• Cleanliness drives – Eaton employees volunteered to carry out a Cleanliness Drive at Sinhagad Fort near Pune. Around 55 volunteers took the trek from the foothills of the Fort to its higher most point, collecting about 25 bags of garbage. The waste was disposed of at the garbage collection center

Eaton employees have implemented initiatives to remind fellow employees about their accountability towards the environment and to inspire them to act responsibly.

One such initiative has been Save Paper and Save Power campaign. The initiative was taken by our employees at the EIEC. The drive helped in minimizing the use of paper on all the floors on the EIEC. The employees also inspired fellow employees on the Cycle to Work initiative.

In addition to truck drivers, the initiative was extended to women, youth and children in 2014. The program also creates awareness around nutrition, education and health care services available and various governmental schemes for their upliftment.

Expert's comment

For a greener and a sustainable future

In one of my editorial notes, recently, I had mentioned about how corporates now want to fully leverage the potential of green and adopt comprehensive green strategy so as to get the most from their sustainability initiatives. Consumers, today, are not only becoming increasingly aware and conversant with green, but they are also adopting green habits and buying green products. While consumers believe that as individuals, they can and should contribute to sustainability by adopting green products, they also hold manufacturing companies to a higher standard when it comes to being green. Realising this, Eaton has been strongly positioning itself as a sustainable power management company capable of addressing the global megatrends in India. The company offers products to its customers that help them effectively deal with rising energy costs, reducing emissions, ensuring reliable power for critical applications, reducing risk to people and property, and building a sustainable business.

Going green is nice, but not if it hinders your ability to compete in the realities of the marketplace. With the right approach and defined goals, Eaton has been successful in achieving potential economic benefits too - including long-term cost savings, waste reductions and process efficiency improvements. Moreover, Eaton is open to partner with organizations and institutions to jointly promote innovative and energy-efficient technologies for a sustainable tomorrow, and this helps them lead in sustainability practices continuing to expand.

We got to interact with Eaton’s leadership on a few occasions and found them demonstrating through actions what they mean by acting with integrity and Doing Business Right. I am sure with the 2014 edition of the Sustainability Report, Eaton will reinforce its accountability by making sustainability information and results widely available to the public. It should inspire the company’s employees, customers, suppliers, partners and the communities together shape a greener and a sustainable future.
