FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: DANA SUSKIND, MD – TWO EVENTS! CONTACT: Lonnie Stonitsch, Executive Director of FAN, [email protected] EVENT #1: Thursday, September 17, 2015, Thirty Mil l ion Words: Bui lding a Chi ld’s Brain, 1:00 PM, Loyola University Chicago School of Law, Power Rogers & Smith Ceremonial Courtroom, Corboy Law Center, 25 E. Pearson St. , Chicago, 60611. EVENT #2: Thursday, September 17, 2015, Thirty Mil l ion Words: Bui lding a Chi ld’s Brain, 7:00 PM, Skokie School Auditorium, 520 Glendale Ave., Winnetka, 60093. A famous study by researchers Betty Hart and Todd Risley (1995) found that some children heard thirty million fewer words by their fourth birthdays than others. The children who heard more words were better prepared when they entered school. These same kids, when followed into third grade, had bigger vocabularies, were stronger readers, and got higher test scores. The bottom line: the kids who started out ahead, stayed ahead; the kids who started our behind, stayed behind. This disparity in learning is referred to as the achievement gap. Dana Suskind, MD, Professor of Surgery and Director of the Pediatr ic Cochlear Implant Program at The University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital , learned of this thirty million-word gap in the course of her work as a cochlear implant surgeon. Along with her sister-in-law, Beth Suskind, she founded The Thirty Million Word Initiative, developing programs for parents to show the kind of parent-child communication that enables optimal neural development. The goal is to get parents to follow the three Ts: Tune in to what your child is doing; Talk more to your child using lots of descriptive words; and Take turns with your child as you engage in conversation. Family Action Network (FAN) offers two events in one day with Dr. Suskind. At the first event at 1:00 PM on Sept. 17, Dr. Suskind will be joined on stage after her presentation by Michael Kaufman, Director, Education Law and Policy Institute, Loyola University Chicago School of Law. At the second event at 7:00 PM on Sept. 17, she will be joined by Diana Mendley Rauner, Ph.D., President, Ounce of Prevention Fund. Our unique After School Karate program channels after school energy into a positive, productive afternoon of supervised homework, fun activities and quality martial arts training. Our program provides for a safe space for your child from the time they get out of school until you get off work. And we work with you and your child to motivate them to be the best that they can be.
Our after school karate program blends two important programs into one. First, we are dedicated to the scholastic achievement of our martial arts students. We stress a minimum B average to graduate to the next belt level, and we reward achievers. We provide supervised homework time, and check students’ homework agendas before dressing for Karate class. Second, after homework is complete, students join our quality martial arts classes for 1-2 classes per day. Karate promotes physical development, stamina and coordination. It also provides a fun, social and high-energy balance to academic work.
Our after school karate program is not a day care. But it is a great alternative. In our studio, we create a respectful, cooperative environment in which kids have responsibility for others and show respect to others. We also teach students to manage responsibilities that are theirs alone: a clean uniform, homework agenda, a B average and respectful interactions. Our program stresses personal discipline, taking responsibility and setting goals—skills that carry us through life. We also promote self-confi dence and self-respect, which give your child the courage to say NO in the face of peer pressure.
Best of all, our martial arts classes are full of excitement and fun! Your children will train with some of the country’s best karate athletes, and witness the rewards of perseverence and hard work. You can feel confi dent your children will be receiving the fi nest instruction available from instructors committed to excellence and continued learning.
