the real prep school

Students, have you ever sat in a class wondering: How will I actually use this in my future? I promise you’ll never have that question at EVIT. We call EVIT “the real prep school” because we provide real training for the real world. We give you skills, preparation for professional credentials, and, if you choose, college credit, to make you more likely than your other high school peers to get a job and succeed in college and life. And it’s fun too. For a half-day, you learn a profession alongside students and teachers who share your interests. You get to explore something you’re passionate about – cars, fashion, firefighting, engineering, health, aviation, hair styling, and much more – while getting a head-start on a career, college or both.

Parents, EVIT is as much your child’s school as the one they currently attend. Your tax dollars fund EVIT so that East Valley high school students – district, charter or home-schooled – can receive high quality career and technical education at our campuses tuition-free. We also offer adult education programs with financial aid, including PELL

grants, available to those who qualify. Most importantly, we produce real results: Our students have a 95 percent high school graduation rate, 86 percent are placed in college, jobs or the military, and two out of three go on to college. In addition, nearly every EVIT program trains students to test for a portable, professional credential that makes them employable anywhere. With high school dropout rates being high and college tuition even higher, you owe it to your family to check out a school that gives back so much.

Business leaders, EVIT is your school too. In fact our mission is to provide a technically-trained workforce that meets the market-based needs of business and industry. Each EVIT program has an advisory council with representatives from that industry to ensure that our training meets your latest standards. And through internships, externships, job shadowing and placement, you have the opportunity to meet our students and hire those who will best meet your business needs.

In these pages and in person, we invite you to tour our campuses and discover for yourselves how EVIT gives back.

Each year, thousands of people tour the East Valley Institute of Technology’s Dr. A. Keith Crandell (Main) Campus.

Built on what was once the University of Arizona’s experimental research farm, the 65-acre campus is located on the METRO light rail line and features more than 17 buildings, a radio station, millions of dollars in state-of-the-art equipment and technology, and a staff of teachers recruited from Valley business and industry. In August 2014, EVIT added a new restaurant to its campus: Bistro 13, which is operated by the nationally-accredited EVIT Culinary Arts & Commercial Baking programs.

The Main Campus attracts visitors, especially educators from all over the nation, who want to create their own version of EVIT. Public tours are given on Tuesdays; call (480) 461-4029 for more information about public or school tours. Text EVIT to 90210.

Building 1 is the heart of the EVIT Main Campus. Step inside and you’ll

immediately feel the energetic beat of The Pulse, EVIT’s Dance Top 40 student-operated radio station. In state-of-the-art studios, Radio/Audio Production students learn live sound and audio production, on-air performance, and much more. Stop by and you’re likely to see students doing on-air interviews and local bands performing in the new recording studios.

The Video Production program is home to one of the largest training studios in Arizona and the place where students learn all aspects of visual media production. Multimedia Technologies students learn typography, photography and more as they design materials and websites. Multimedia also includes separate Photography, Graphic Design and Web Design programs.

3D Animation students learn storyboarding, animation and video game design. See students engaged in the inner workings

of electronics in the computer technology programs: Information Technology & Engineering Careers (iTEC), Cisco Networking Academy, Computer Programming & Mobile App Design, Digital Device Diagnostic & Repair, and Robotics Engineering.

Building 1 is also home to the Law Enforcement program, where students learn about crime scene investigations, tactical operations and more. This program stresses physical training and a militaristic style, so you will often see Law Enforcement students training outside as well.

Creativity reigns at the east end of Building 1, where the Fashion, Interiors and Textiles program is located. The rooms that focus on interior design have been painted and designed by the students. And the fashion side features mannequins, sewing machines and truly gifted artists whose design collections are judged each year by fashion experts, such as the editors of Marie Claire.

Culinary Arts and Commercial Baking in Building 2 is one of the most visited

places on the EVIT Main Campus. Students gain experience by working special functions in the banquet hall. But the real action takes place in the “back of the house,” where the students explore their passion for cooking and baking with the guidance of professional chefs. These programs are the only high school Culinary Arts & Baking programs in Arizona nationally accredited by the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation.

The brick barn-shaped building attached to Building 3 actually was a functioning

barn years ago when the University of Arizona research farm was housed there. Today, it is where EVIT’s elected governing board meets the second Tuesday of every month. This building also is where students pay fees and where visitors can find EVIT Superintendent Dr. Sally Downey.

evit main campusfind inside: Early Childhood Education students working with children in Bridges Preschool. Partner Bridges provides an on-site lab school where students gain experience in classroom management and discipline techniques while learning how to interact with young children.

If you like to build things, solve problems and work with

power tools and machinery, then Buildings 6, 7 and 8 are must-see stops on your EVIT Main Campus tour. Precision Machining students and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning students are training for two of the most in-demand occupations today: the machinist and the HVAC technician. Construction Technologies students learn a range of skills, from electrical wiring and plumbing to roofing, blueprint reading and more, while Welding students learn basic metal fabrication and entry level welding techniques in a program that has paid internships and an excellent record of placing students in jobs.

If you’re in to cars and trucks, you have to check

out EVIT’s Automotive and Collision Repair programs in Buildings 9 and 10 and the Diesel program in Building 8. Featuring the latest technology, these programs are taught by nationally-certified instructors. Students practice skills on industry-provided late-model automobiles and participate in internships and job shadowing.

No visit to EVIT’s Main Campus is complete without a stop at Building 11

– home to the Fire Science program, an auto bay with donated fire trucks, a training tower, and ropes course. You may see the students putting out a car or house fire or rappelling off the tower.

Cosmetology, located in Building 12 on the Main Campus’ east side, is

EVIT’s single largest program and one of the school’s most popular services offered to the public. It’s also one of the best education deals anywhere. It’s tuition- free for high school students; the same training can cost $25,000 and higher at private beauty schools. Students also have the option of studying Aesthetics, a cosmetology specialty where they learn techniques for skin analysis, facials, and more.

Bistro 13 opened in August 2014. Featuring global cuisine, this restaurant

is operated by students in the Culinary Arts & Commercial Baking programs. Bistro 13 is housed in a former Fazoli’s restaurant building that was renovated by EVIT’s Interior Design, HVAC, Construction and Welding students.

Center in Buildings 14 and 15 on the Main Campus, where students can train for a range of health occupations. The complex includes an ambulance bay and an operating room. Located next-door, partner Adelante Healthcare offers EVIT’s health students the opportunity to gain clinical experience as well. EVIT’s health programs include: Dental Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, Human Anatomy & Physiology for Medical Careers, Massage Therapy, Medical Assistant, Nursing Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, Physical Therapy Technician, Veterinary Assistant (East Campus), Practical Nursing (Adult Education), Surgical Technologist (Adult Education), and Sterile Processing Technician (Adult Education).

EVIT isn’t just for high school students. Adults, too, can take EVIT classes and

train for careers in health care and nursing, industrial commercial technology, human services and collision repair. Adult programs are tuition-based, but financial aid is available for those who qualify. Stop by the Adult Education Center in Building 16 on the west edge of the EVIT Main Campus.

In Building 17 just south of EVIT’s Adult Education Center, you’ll find one of the

most interesting places on the Main Campus. Inside, mechanical engineer Bryan Beaulieu is working on an educational tourist attraction to be constructed south of Phoenix in the desert: a 42-story globe of the Earth. EVIT students have designed and constructed materials to be used in The Great Globe Project that will be built by children from all over the world. The model in The Great Globe lab at EVIT features a train, lights, robotic arms, and even a soundtrack. It’s a project that not only engages youth in science, technology, engineering and math – but also in geography, global diversity and cultural understanding. Visit thegreatglobe.com.

In August 2011, the East Valley Institute of Technology expanded to open the East Campus at 6625 S. Power Road in Mesa. Located next-door to ASU Polytechnic, EVIT East offers Cosmetology, Future Engineers and several health programs.

In addition, two popular EVIT programs – Aviation and Veterinary Assistant – are exclusive to the East Campus. And, through its Future Engineers program, EVIT East is the only Arizona high school to offer a pre-college engineering program based on a stellar curriculum developed by Southern Methodist University in Texas.

The 10-acre campus has grown to more than 700 students, but still retains a small-school feel with the entire staff pitching in to help with fundraisers, events and other day-to-day activities. And with the vet program housed there, East receives frequent visits from dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, and even horses. Text EVIT to 90210.

EVIT East is home to the Future Engineers program, a pre-college course for students who plan to major in engineering in college. EVIT

is the only high school in Arizona to offer this hands-on, pre-engineering program that is based on curriculum from Southern Methodist University in Texas. Future Engineers was developed in partnership with Intel.

Students in the Aviation program explore the world of flight through lectures and hands-on lab work that includes the use of simulators and drones. They also work on plane engines and have the opportunity to earn college credit. And, in fall 2013, the students started building an airplane at EVIT East.

The Cosmetology program is as popular at EVIT East as it is at EVIT Main. Tuition-free and very successful in preparing students for state licensing exams, Cosmetology has no shortage of students at either campus. The newer East program has started developing its own traditions, including

the Fantasy Hair and Fashion Show hosted at the East Campus for the first time in the fall of 2013.

It’s hard to tell who enjoys the Veterinary Assistant program more – the students or the dogs, cats and other pets who frequent the campus to provide a hands-on learning experience. Students in this program learn a range of medical knowledge and get the opportunity to participate in job shadowing and internships at local shelters, animal practices and wildlife facilities.

Building 3 at EVIT East is a busy place, housing three health programs – Medical Assistant, Nursing Assistant, and Human

Anatomy and Physiology – the campus student lounge, and a corner lobby that serves as a great place for student fund-raisers for groups like HOSA Future Health Professionals.

When Sierra Jennings’ counselor at Chandler High School suggested she enroll at the East Valley Institute of Technology, she had no difficulty selecting a program.

“I’m a fourth-generation welder,” she said.

Welding may be a common career in Sierra’s family, but within the industry, female welders are rare – and highly sought after by many employers. Female welders who can do heavy lifting and welding can earn $50,000 starting salaries. There are also opportunities for women in welding to go into project management or to work as inspectors.

“There are a lot of opportunities for them,” said EVIT counselor Pauline Acosta. “If they play their cards right, the sky is the limit.”

At EVIT, Sierra is one of many “non-trads” – students who are blazing a trail in careers where most of their gender rarely ventures. These students are encouraged and celebrated at EVIT for their desire to break down societal barriers.

As part of its commitment to provide a workforce that meets the market-driven needs of business and industry, EVIT promotes the enrollment of non-traditional students. The state of Arizona defines “non-traditional” as occupational training or fields of work for which individuals from one gender comprise less than 25 percent of those employed in the workforce.

Female students are considered non-trads in Automotive, Collision Repair, Construction, Culinary Arts, 3D Animation, Fire Science, HVAC, Law Enforcement, Multimedia, Precision Machining, Radio/Audio Production, Video Production, Welding and engineering programs. Male students are non-trads in Early Childhood Education, Cosmetology, Massage Therapy, and Fashion, Interiors and Design programs. Males are also considered non-trads in all health programs.

Non-traditional career paths can be quite rewarding, especially in industries traditionally dominated by the opposite sex. Mike McAfee of the Arizona Automobile Dealers Association said female employees are much needed in automotive and collision repair, especially since 50 percent of that industry’s customers are female. “We look to public education” for female employees, he said. “That really is our pipeline.”

And for any young women who think their place isn’t in the garage, automotive instructor Randy Golding points out that in some ways, they can do a better job in engine diagnostics than men can. “Women think differently than men. They hear things that men don’t,” he said. “Women are very intuitive to things as a technician that men are not.”

For more information about non-traditional programs and career pathways, visit www.evit.com/nontraditional or contact EVIT counselor Pauline Acosta at [email protected] or (480) 461-4156.
