Letter from our Minister

Dear Friends,

Easter falls early this year – when people tell me that I’m never sure if they are accusing the church of

somehow interfering with their holiday or work plans, or if they are seeking confirmation of the date or

if they are simply mentioning it to me in conversation. But the question that always follows that opening

sentence is ‘why does the date change from year to year’. And the simple answer to that is that early

Christians wanted to keep the date of Easter linked with the Jewish Passover, the feast during which

Jesus was arrested, crucified and rose again, and Passover is a celebration determined by the lunar calen-

dar. So Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after March 21st, meaning it can

fall any time between March 22nd and April 25th. Did I say the answer was simple?

Recently the Archbishop of Canterbury suggested the date of Easter should be fixed, perhaps to the

second or third Sunday in April, which means that although the date would still change, the festival would

fall roughly around the same time, and we wouldn’t be left with an early or a late date, affecting school

and work holidays and term times. Be prepared for controversy – the last time this idea was mooted, it

was met with vociferous arguments against such a change, and it would mean an even bigger gap between

the celebration of Easter in the west and in the Eastern orthodox Church – and the reason for the dif-

ference in dates between the two churches is a subject for another letter, another time.

The benefits of a fixed Easter are obvious – we would have a longer time between Christmas and the be-

ginning of Lent, to hear about the public ministry of Christ and get to know this new teacher as he grows

up in faith, before beginning the walk with him toward the cross. And from the point of view of a parent

and school chaplain, term terms would be uniform, and holidays more evenly paced out. We might also be

guaranteed an Easter morning celebration without snow on the ground which we’ve had in recent years

when Easter has been early.

But I enjoy too the unexpectedness of Easter – coming not at a fixed time we get

used to and take for granted, but challenging us to find space for the festival in

our routine, and reminding us that Easter comes all year round, life in the midst of

death, light in the midst of darkness, love in the face of hate. And that is a joy

we should discover every day with thanks.

Stated Annual Meeting

The Stated Annual Meeting of the Congregation will held at the close of the 10.30 service on

Sunday 20th March 2016. This is an important meeting in the life of the church and we hope

you will be able to attend.

Fundraising Appeal Launch on 28th January 2016

The Corstorphine Public Hall Rebuild fundraising appeal was officially launched on Thursday, 28th

January at an event in Corstorphine.

The event began on a cold, bright morning, outside the Public Hall in Kirk Loan with short speeches

of welcome by the Lord Provost, Donald Wilson and the Old Parish Church minister, Moira McDon-

ald. A piper then led the way round to the warmth of Corstorphine Bowling Club, where seats and

refreshments were provided.

David Sutherland, treasurer of the Public Hall Company, spoke about the background to the fund-

raising campaign. Although the Public Hall Company already has £1 million in the bank from the in-

surance payout and other sources, the plan is to build for the next 100 years, and in order to

achieve this, the company, now a registered charity, will need a further £700,000 to get the build-

ing back up and running, with possible further fund-raising required after that to make the new

building even more special.

Moira commented on this

ambition, comparing it to the

wishes of the original mem-

bers of the Public Hall Com-

pany back in 1892 to pass on

a lasting legacy to the local

community. Tommy McLean,

chair of the fundraising

committee, talked about the

way the hall would be used in

the future, reminding people

not just of the variety of

groups who had used it in

the past, but that CYCC in

its current premises at the Hub has now offered facilities to various new groups who need a meet-

ing place. CYCC also runs a charity shop at the Hub, which has already raised a substantial sum in

aid of the Public Hall rebuild.

Councillor Frank Ross spoke of the place of the Hall in the local community and the various ways

people could contribute to the appeal, both financially and in kind. Thanks to the Corstorphine Ro-

tary Club and to the Corstorphine Pram Shop for their very kind donations, and to individual donors

to the rebuilding fund. A choir from Fox Covert Primary School then sang a selection of well-

known Scottish songs, ending with the quirky ‘Three Craws’. It was encouraging to see so many

people showing an interest in the project, from those who are currently involved in various aspects

of it to those who have been involved in the past.

More volunteers are always welcome, whether to help at one-off events or to serve on particular

sub-committees. For further information about the rebuild appeal please visit:
