Easter for many of us is about the short, but welcome long weekend that comes a few months after Christmas. The extra-long weekend where you load the car, hitch the boat/camper/trailer (or just pack tents) and take off with the family to camp, kayak and waterski at Fong On Bay, hike around Davies Creek or venture further afield to fossick at O’Briens Creek. The Easter weekend is often about getting away to explore and enjoy the outdoors with friends and family.

This Easter we’re not heading off. Instead we’re going to check out what we have right here on our doorstep – in other words, all the things Tablelanders sometimes take for granted! Easter weekend 2018 we’re going to:

• do the southern Waterfall Circuit• buy lots of roadside produce • check out a heritage museum or art gallery• cycle the Tablelands Rail Trail• stock up on local coffee, cheese and chocolate• photograph rolling hills and spectacular views

And as Easter Monday comes to an end, we will wallow in that feeling of complete satisfaction that comes from knowing there’s no tent to air, esky to be emptied or wet muddy clothes to wash…

Kuranda Village from the air. Photo: Steven Nowakowski

Kuranda. Village in the Rainforest. A gem in the rainforest. Kuranda is a special place and there’s nowhere else quite

like it. Blessed with natural beauty and a wonderful climate, Kuranda offers a cool alternative to the steamy coastal temperatures of Cairns. Home to an eclectic mix of people - artists and artisans, hippies, greenies (otherwise known as environmentalists), indigenous Australians, alternate lifestylers and passionate people from around the world. Apart from its natural attributes, the area is steeped in history.

Situated on the Barron River, Kuranda’s first inhabitants were the indigenous Djabugay people. Since then, their descendants continue to contribute to the rich cultural fabric of the area today. Early European settlers took up farming sites in the mid 1880s before Kuranda was officially surveyed in 1888. In those early years, Kuranda was a farming area producing mainly timber, dairy cattle and coffee.

With the growing mining population in Herberton and a desperate need to get supplies to and from the coast, a railway route was planned. And so began the Kuranda Railway, as a route was steadily cut across and through the mountains to the Tablelands. The railway from Cairns took several years to construct commencing in 1887, reaching Kuranda in 1891. An incredible feat of engineering with no modern machinery but plenty of sheer will—its safe to say manpower built the railway. Negotiating steep terrain and dense rainforest, teams of workers forged their way up the mountain creating a railway line of 75km and consisting of 15 tunnels. The Kuranda Scenic Rail is now a popular tourist attraction where visitors marvel at the sheer beauty on a journey through World Heritage rainforest, but appreciate the hardships that workers endured to create the line. The historic Kuranda Railway Station was built in 1915 and is the prettiest railway station in Australia. The railway is very much an integral part of Kuranda and brings many tourists each year to enjoy what Kuranda has to offer.

After the small coffee industry failed in the early 1900s, a new interest in tourism arose. People were drawn to the picturesque rainforests of Kuranda and it soon became a

favourite destination for honeymooners. One such location was ‘The Maze' (1923) - a natural history and scenic attraction later renamed 'Paradise'. ‘Fairyland Tea Garden’ (1930s) was another popular destination for holiday makers.

Kuranda played an important part as a connection point during both World Wars. It was a busy stop off point for recruits travelling from the Tablelands by rail to enlistment centres in Cairns. The Kuranda Hotel was used during the World War II as a medical centre and hospital by the Army Field Ambulance Units. As a destination, Kuranda was popular as a rest and relaxation place for troops on leave.

In 1935 the Barron Gorge Hydroelectric Power Station was opened – Queensland's first hydroelectric power station.Demand for electricity soon exceeded supply and by 1959 the original station was decommissioned and replaced with a newer station further down the river in 1963. The station is still in operation today powering the equivalent to 660,000 light bulbs.

The Kuranda Range Road started as a single lane dirt track in the 1920s, but with the advent of World War II and the need

to accommodate Defence vehicles, reconstruction of the road commenced in 1940. The route zig-zagged up the old Smithfield Track through rainforest and dense tropical jungle. It was opened to military traffic in June 1942. However, with continued use, the road soon needed widening and sealing. The current Barron River Bridge in Kuranda was completed in 1938 and the Kuranda Range Road today provides an integral link between the coast and the Tablelands, and contributes largely to the economic development of the Atherton Tablelands and the growth of tourism in the district.

With the ‘flower power’ revolution rising as a symbol of passive resistance against the Vietnam War, Kuranda became the location of choice for hippie communes in the late 1960s. The laid-back atmosphere, connection with nature and agreeable climate saw ‘free and easy’ hippies seeking to live simply and be self-sufficient, make Kuranda home. Artists and musicians began arriving in the 1970s also seeking an alternate lifestyle in the rainforest.

The world famous Honey House began operating in 1959 on Therwine Street by Howard Jones, before it moved to its current location in 1968 (where it doubled as the office for the attached motel). The original Honey House is still operating today and has the best honey products around.

In 1978 the original Kuranda markets began on land owned by the Honey House. The then owner, Jim Mealing, realised his ‘markets’ vision for Kuranda and enlisted friends, artisans and community members to help build a series of market stalls using secondhand materials. The stalls were soon embraced by tourists who snatched up homemade food products, art and local crafts. Mealing’s vision is now known as the Kuranda Original Rainforest Markets, open 7 days a week from 9.30am to 3pm. The markets offer a huge range of scrumptious local and international cuisines along with a unique shopping experience in relaxed surroundings. Gifts and souvenirs are aplenty here, plus there’s a 9 hole mini golf course. The atmosphere in the markets is amazing.

In 1995 the award winning Skyrail Rainforest Cableway was opened and shone internationally as a first in environmental tourism. Skyrail provides a unique perspective of our World Heritage listed rainforest canopy and shows the mighty Barron Falls from another view point.

KURANDA ORIGINAL RAINFOREST MARKETS

OPEN 6 DAYS [TUESDAY CLOSED]

March 2018 What’s On & Where To Go 11

There’s a second market precinct in Kuranda, at the Heritage Markets, where you can find more stalls along with Birdworld Kuranda and Kuranda Koala Gardens – a great way to see our wildlife up close. You can also dine at Frog’s Restaurant with waterdragons.

The tropics are known for its stunning butterflies and in particular the famous blue Ulysses butterfly that is visible everywhere in Kuranda. A visit to the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is a must – it’s the largest butterfly aviary in the Southern Hemisphere.

Visitors also come to Kuranda to view Barron Falls – a spectacular sight when in flood. Why not take a peaceful riverboat cruise on the Barron River and visit ‘Paradise’ where the first far North Queensland rainforest tour used this trail in the 1920s. You might be lucky enough to spot Elvis the resident cassowary.

At the top of the range you’ll find Kuranda Rainforestation Nature Park. Yet another opportunity to see Australian wildlife up close. Be sure to check out the Army Duck Rainforest tour – on the historical World War II amphibious vehicle that travels on land and water. The Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience showcases the local indigenous customs and traditions including their dances.

Take some time to meander around the picturesque streets of Kuranda. Drop in to admire the stained glass windows at St Saviour’s Anglican Church (built 1913-14) on Coondoo Street. There are plenty of stores to find unique treasures. Visit the galleries that exhibit and sell local art and craft. Treat yourself to the delicious locally made food, including ice cream and crepes, and head off on a nature walk. There’s Jumrum Walk, Market Walk, River Walk, or Jungle Walk and maps are available from the Kuranda Visitor Information Centre. If visting the Information Centre check out the wall length mural by renowned indigenous artist Zane Saunders. The knowledgeable staff at the centre will help you with any information about Kuranda to help make your experience even better.

Why not stay for the weekend? Choose from resorts, motels, bed and breakfasts, self-contained cottages, luxury homes and the caravan park, plus there is National Park

campgrounds nearby. Kuranda accommodation has one thing in common — the rainforest is the first thing you see when you open the door.

Be sure to drop into Kuranda this Easter on Saturday 31 March when the annual community Easter in the Park festival is on. The village is open every day of the holidays including Good Friday. Spend some quiet time in the rainforest relaxing and enjoying the village’s wonderful restaurants and coffee shops at meal times, and wander the markets and village streets to discover local handicrafts and art.

With so many things to do, including wildlife attractions, mini-golf and bush walks, the Village in the Rainforest is the ideal place to take the family for the Easter break.

14 What’s On & Where To Go March 2018

The Wet Tropics of North Queensland is a unique part of the world and in 1988 received World Heritage listing in recognition of this. Over the recent history of the region, large areas of the forests have been cleared for settlement, farming and timber industries. This is the story of a local volunteer organisation Trees for the Evelyn and Atherton Tablelands (TREAT) whose work is dedicated to replanting trees to restore the land and forests. It's a wonderful example of how individuals and communities work together to create forests for future generations and wildlife.

TREAT is a community-based seed propagation and tree planting group operating on the Atherton Tablelands. Formed in 1982 TREAT’s principal objective is to encourage people to plant native rainforest trees. Membership has increased to well over 500 as more and more landowners with farms or urban gardens feel the need to plant native trees for a variety of reasons – to rehabilitate degraded lands, improve water quality, provide windbreaks, restore remnant forest, rebuild and revegetate wildlife corridors to enable wildlife to move freely or, just to enhance the landscape.

TREAT members work voluntarily all year round with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service - Restoration Services - Lake Eacham Nursery, rearing trees to rebuild the framework of the tropical rainforests of the Atherton and Evelyn Tablelands. Over the past 20 years, almost a half a million native plants have been propagated and planted. Production involves seed collection and preparation, the rearing of seedlings and the care of the young trees until they are ready to be planted out.

Projects have ranged from the revegetation of seven hectares on the shores of Lake Tinaroo, planting 70 trees in a kindergarten yard and helping build a 1.2km wildlife corridor to facilitate wildlife movement between two isolated forest remnants. A key project currently being managed by TREAT, of several years duration, is estimated to cost $1M. Part of this is met with grants of $450,000 provided by the Natural Heritage Trust - a Commonwealth Government initiative. The balance is met by TREAT in the form of in-kind labour. A number of smaller projects are supported with grants from various sources.

TREAT volunteers not only plant trees, they design, manage and monitor complex projects, and provide annual progress reports to agencies providing financial support. Volunteers are also involved in related activities - such as monitoring wildlife populations, studying vegetation changes and running school awareness programs.

TREAT meets every Friday* morning to propagate rainforest seedlings at the QPWS nursery, McLeish Rd, Lake Eacham. All are welcome. Open from 7am, members can arrive at any time. Please wear closed footwear. * except Public Holidays

March 2018 What’s On & Where To Go 15

Tableland Trails and DestinationsM Y S T E R I O U S W A T E R F A L L SOne of my popular tours is the Mysterious Waterfalls Tour.

The intention is to visit some of the less known waterfalls on the Tablelands that are accessible and, well, a bit mysterious. Locals will be familiar with many of these so I have put a small collection together for visitors and anyone still discovering the area. All locations can be found in my book The Traveller's Guide to North Queensland.

Easy Walks

Souita Falls: Not quite on the Waterfall Circuit at Millaa Millaa, as it's a little off the beaten track and somewhat neglected. At the end of Middlebrook Rd (off Maalan Rd) this is a pretty series of falls in a rain forested glade of colourful rocks. The rocks can be slippery so don't veer too far off the tracks or past the lookouts.

Hall's Falls: At Wondecla take Rolley Rd for about 6km to the falls signpost and then on to the carpark. It's only a short but rough 100m walk to this small waterfall with a beautiful cold, clear pool.

McKenzie Falls: One of the best kept secrets of the Tablelands, these falls are best visited in a 4wd. On the Tumoulin Rd to Ravenshoe, turn off onto Allen Rd and over the bridged crossing of The Millstream. Follow the dirt road up the hill and after about 2km turn left. Before you cross The Millstream again, a road heads left to the carpark. From here it's a very short but rough track to one of the prettiest falls on the Tablelands. In open forest (like Hall's Falls), it's scenically different to many other local falls. Take care if the rocks are wet.

Vision Falls: Right near one of the most popular sites on the Tablelands but hardly

ever visited. Wright's Ck Rd, near Lake Eacham, crosses over Wright's Ck and from here an old walking track takes you on a circuit to a little grotto amidst large king ferns and Vision Falls. The track was upgraded some time ago but has since been neglected. In the wet season there are three pretty falls along this track.

Harder Walks

Windin Falls: Along Topaz Rd, near Malanda, head toward the Mt Bartle Frere walking track trailhead (Old Cairns Track, then Gourka Rd). An old forestry track heads off where Gourka Rd has a 90 degree bend at a clearing about 6.5km along. The walking track from here is usually a bit overgrown for the first part until it gets into a more closed forest. About two hours along you meet the top of a hill with a steep drop down to the creek and top of this major waterfall. Great view, but take care again on the rocks if they are wet.

Cannabullen Falls: Along one of the Misty Mountains trails, near Millaa Millaa, and possibly one of the most spectacular falls in North QLD. Like Windin Falls, the view of Cannabullen Falls is from the top, and not actually of the falls. Turn off Maalan Rd and then Suttees Gap Rd – the walking track is well signed. It's a couple of hours walk in and there's also a few creek crossings where you will get your feet wet. The short, steep drop to Cannabullen Ck is the hardest part, but the view from the top is very special. There is also a lovely set of falls just upstream.
