March Ministry Meeting Report
Agreed to give Tommy Redding a three month
severance for April 1– June 30.
Gave gift of $2500 to Dusty Foster.
Increased student minister position by 4 hours to
make it a full-time position
Personnel Team Report
The children’s search team has finished
collecting 50+ resumes for our full-time position. The minister search process includes reviewing
resumes according to our minister profile, sending
email questions, phone interviews, reference
checks, interviews, and meeting with children’s leadership and deacons.
The student search team will begin with
publicizing the position for a month, ending April 30. We will likely use the same process as
mentioned above for the children’s minister. Both
the children’s and youth full-time positions have
been approved for a salary package of $37,000-40,000.
The search teams consists of Dale Kramer,
Kathy Mansfield, Dale Sanford, Melissa Sangster,
Bob Scott, plus two adult representatives each from
children and youth ministries.
Tommy Redding will work his last day at
the church on March 31. Tommy has worked at
the church for 5 ½ years. We are thankful to report that he is in contact with several churches.
We are in process of restructuring our church staff. While changes are difficult, I believe the new changes will take us where we need to be. We will have four full-time ministry staff: Senior Pastor, Worship and Missions, Students, and Children. The new student
and children’s ministers will also take on some extra
responsibilities.
I am finding that our young families are excited about expanding the children and student minister positions to full-time. From my standpoint, I can have much
higher expectations from full-time ministers who will have the hours to increase their leadership in minis-
try, missions and evangelism.
As two new ministers come to our church, I want to challenge you to raise the bar in volunteer ministry
support. Regardless of your child or student’s age, we need you to participate twice a year in program or event ministry. Parents must help administer
ministry events for children’s and youth ministry.
I feel we have gotten away from this expectation. If
we want to “go to the next level” in children and student ministry, we will need the support of all parents. We especially need help implementing discipleship and ministry/mission events. And there is a healthy expectation that the parents of children in the nursery will take turns watching children in the nursery. As with most ministries, there is something
for everyone to do:
Serve on Parent Advisory Council
Help plan and implement events
Provide food, transportation, etc.
Be a chaperone for events or camp
Teach classes for children, youth and parents
Please note the contact persons for the interim student plan found in the student ministry section of this newsletter. Also, please review the redistribution of Education and Administration responsibilities
adjacent to this column.
As always, I ask for your fervent prayer for our stu-dent and children’s ministries. Pray for the search teams that are already working to seek God’s leader-ship in these vital areas of ministry. I am inspired by all that you do every day for God’s kingdom and His
glory!

Dear Church Family,
Gary and I just want to take this time to thank each of you who have either visited, called, sent cards or brought some of the most wonderful meals we have ever had while I was "down" following my back surgery and the subsequent hospital
stay for complications. We truly believe with all of our hearts that Simpsonville Baptist Church has by far some of the most caring people in our congregation that we have ever known
and each of you can truly be proud of that. It never ceases to amaze me that when someone is hurting in any way, we all reach out with a touch of kindness to make what is happening to them, somewhat better with the
kindness we show toward them. I have been on the receiving end of this more times than I care to admit, so I speak from experience when I tell you how much you are loved by myself
and Gary and we pray that someway we will be able to repay your kindness with kindness of our own. God Bless all of you as you continue to reach out in kindness and compassion for those who really need it.

Proverbs 19:21 says, “You can make many plans, but the LORD’s purpose will prevail.” Those are
reassuring words for those of us who like to make plans and devise a blueprint for what the next
five or ten years of our lives will look like. We do that in our personal lives and we also do that as
a church body. It’s natural to want to know the future and do what we can to make it happen.
But it doesn’t always go as we plan.
Our plans for 2011 called for a mission trip to Kenya, a repeat from the last year that had been
so successful. It didn’t happen, largely due to a lack of medical personnel to staff the clinic that
we were hoping to provide. God is still doing wonderful things in Kenya and we are continuing to
support them and pray for them and are praying for the opportunity to return soon.
Many of you have asked about our plans for Japan this year. We have recently decided that it is
in the group’s best interest to postpone the trip until the situation in Japan is resolved. With all
of the calamity in that area with the earthquake, tsunami and radiation, we have been on alert to
the travel advisories and have been monitoring the situation. Our government is persuading US
citizens to avoid the area, and though we’ve been praying to make it on the May dates, we real-
ized that the dates of our trip might still be unsafe regarding the radiation. There have also
been food shortages, and we do not want to contribute to the problem by accessing resources
that should otherwise go to families in need. We will postpone the mission trip until sometime in
July before school starts, or possibly next year depending on the safety issues. We are open to
the idea that waiting a bit longer might broaden our ministry opportunities; if it’s allowable, we
might be able to take people with us to help with cleanup or disaster relief. Please pray for the
people of Japan. Not only are they having to respond to many different levels of danger and dev-
astation , there is a cloud of despair and hopelessness that settles on people in times of trouble.
Less than one half of one percent of the Japanese population claim any Christian belief. Our
prayer is that their hearts may open to the hope of the gospel.
We have a good number of people already signed up for the eastern Kentucky trip on June 19-
25, but we’d love for more to go! We’ll be working with a few different communities around Inez,
KY, involving light construction and repair, work with food pantries and clothes closets, upkeep
needs for a church plant, ministry with children, etc. Contact Linda Otterback for more details
and to sign up.
Lastly I would remind you again that the church needs more guitarists, keyboardists, bassists
and drummers to step up and serve. God can always be praised, with or without instruments. But
I would surely miss hearing those instruments, wouldn’t you? If you play or if you know someone
who might be interested, please contact me and we can walk through what might be involved in
being a part of the Sunday morning band.

Truth 4 Life Class - contributed by Barry Lloyd
A few weeks ago one of my crew leaders (Jacob) called me in a whisper to avoid embarrassment to a co-worker. He wanted to tell me of a need of one of our employee's family (the Lopez) whom we had laid-off last year from full-time
status to "As Needed". During the winter, Mr.Lopez's wife was hospitalized for complication with her fifth pregnancy.
During the week of her hospitalization, Mr. Lopez was "Mr. Mom" to 4 children (three boys 2 - 7 years old and a 16 month old daughter). We called him to work on a Friday and he coordinated care for his kids so he could work all day and spend the weekend at the hospital with his wife. The family was to reunite at home on Sunday evening. When they arrived at their rental house they found a pile of their belongings on the street. They had been scammed out of their rent money for 6 months. They had moved in with a friend to share rent that had not been paid to the landlord in over 8 months. The “friend" had pocketed the money and hidden the eviction notices. While they were at the hospital the friend took his belongings and some of their stuff and moved (have not heard from him). The landlord put the rest on the street where the good things were stolen and an ice storm that weekend ruined the rest of their belongings. They found another house to rent, but it has taken all their money (Mrs. Lopez works third shift at a McDonalds and is 7 months pregnant) to pay rent, utilities, and minimal food to feed their family. They have not been able to buy furniture or any of the other
basic household needs.
Jacob called me because "I know you care and you know church people." Jacob's phone call and the Lopezs’ need was heavy on my heart; I was the one who had to lay-off Mr. Lopez. For two weeks I called Louisville Metro churches and agencies on the Lopez's behalf. I was faced with questions regarding their ethical background, legal status, church membership, other assistance they are receiving, etc. Never once was I asked what their need was. A week ago I told the
Truth-4-Life class the Lopez's situation. At the end of class Lisa and I could hardly stand up before class members were telling us what they could donate. Within a week, we completely furnished their house, gave clothes for Mrs. Lopez and
the children, cold meds for the children, toys, kitchen items, and more usable items keep coming.
In every room of this home, T4L is "there" because they care. Not once did anyone ask me any biographics of the family. Class members only wanted to know what they needed. The children were more excited to have beds to sleep in
and a table to eat at than the toys they received. The children wanted to know why people in Shelby County wanted to give them nice things. Before I could answer, Jacob (a self-proclaimed agnostic) spoke up and said, "because these church people care." In the 5 years that I have known the Lopez family, I have never seen Mrs. Lopez smile. This past week I saw a smile with a thank-you. Mr. Lopez said, "thank your people (T4L) for me." SBC's light shines brightly in Jefferson
County!
MOPS contributed by Maureen Bland
MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) is a ministry for mothers of young children, typically between the ages of birth and five
years old. Our mission is to provide a place where moms can fellowship with other moms, find encouragement, to seek
advice or just to make new friends. We have a wonderful time together where we share a meal, sometimes do a craft
together, and talk about topics that are important in mothering and raising young children. We offer free childcare for the
children, so that moms can have a few hours of worry-free fellowship with other moms.
This year, we wanted to reach out to other moms in our community and share with them some of the things we have
learned, so we have partnered with A Loving Choice Pregnancy Center in Shelbyville. In December, a couple of us taught
a cooking class with the girls where we shared an easy to prepare, healthy meal and just spent some time fellowshipping
with them. Then, in the beginning of March, a couple of us hosted one of their Girls Night Out programs where we
brought a meal, shared about building traditions within our family, and made a craft with the girls. Both of these nights
have been very successful, and we are looking forward to becoming more involved with them in the future.
If you are a mom with young children and are looking for a place to get involved, we would love to have you join us at
our next meeting, Thursday, April 14, 2011. We meet from 6-8pm in room 201 of the FLC.
