K enneth came to LexingtonRescue Mission because hewas having a hard time nding
work. I needed to support my
amily but every time I lled out an
application every time I put down
my jail time (I was convicted oselling drugs) I couldnt get my oot
in the door, and that was kind o
rustrating.
The Mission gaveme inspiration!
Ten Kenneth saw a notice about
the Mission and came in to talk with
Vince at the Trit Store. We talkedabout my past and the reason or my
being incarcerated and doing two
years in the penitentiary. alking
with Vince helped out a lot and gave
me inspiration. I decided to go to
culinary school here in Lexington.
Vince said, Youve got to sell
yoursel. Te program really helped
me out and by the grace o the Lord
all o a sudden I got a job working
at the Atomic Ca as a cook and
another part-time job at Applebees.
Ten my wie and I got this notion:Im not getting any younger and
we decided to go ahead and start a
business o our own!
The Lord hassomething more
in store for us.
All Kenneth and his wie
needed was the right locationat a good price and Lexington
would be enjoying Kenneths
own Philadelphia-style ast ood
Philly cheese steak hoagies and
ried chicken. But even with a
great menu and a great plan, there
have been setbacks.
I try not to be bitter, but
Im sometimes rustrated. We
had our business plan written outand submitted to the bank, but
the owner raised the price $90,000!
While Kenneth and his wie continue
to pursue their dream, theyre also
raising three boys ages 6, 8 and 10.
Kenneth coaches a Little League
team and is trying to give back to
the community. I know the Lord
has something more in store or

us. In the meantime, Kenneth is

pursuing his dream.
Being hungry or homeless or
in need o help to rebuild your
lie is difcult any time o year,
but especially during the wintermonths. Te Mission depends on
the generosity o our donors not
only to provide ood and care or
neediest neighbors just like Kenne
but to teach them lie skills to reb
their lives.

Its All About RestoringRelationships
Anative o Lincoln County,Donnie has been in and out oail because o drugs. Te last time he
was sentenced to ve years and whenhe was paroled he came to Lexington
Rescue Mission. I knew i I went
home, it would only be a matter o
ime beore I would be back in my
drug addiction. Its got a lot to do
with the people you hang around
with, and theres not a whole lot in my
hometown except or drugs. I would
be back with the same people in the
ame circumstances. So I came to theMission.
Youve got tochange your life!
Donnie got the Missions address
rom the lawyer o a cellmate. Tey
ent me an application and I lled it
ut and sent it in and here I am. As
part o our Christ-centered recoveryprogram, Lie Renewal, Donnie not
nly received help overcoming his
ddictions but vocational training,
ounseling and spiritual guidance.
For Donnie, the hardest part
the program was learning to
bide by the rules. Youve got to be
willing to make yoursel humble.
For me, that was probably one o the
hardest things. It also teaches youesponsibility, because i youre doing
drugs youre not abiding by the law, so
youve got to change your lie.
Donnie also had a mentor who
helped him along the way. Mentors are
mature Christian men who commit
t least one hour a week to serve as
riends and guides, helping men like
Donnie navigate the oten challenging
oad to recovery.
Te job the Mission helped
him nd was doing maintenance
on apartments and the owner o the
building gave Donnie a place to live as
part o his payment. Now hes workingthrough the court system to reestablish
contact with his sons, ages 6 and 8.
Hes also ound a home church where
hell soon be baptized and accepted
into membership.
Theres alwayssomebody
you can talk to.
But despite his new lie on the
outside, Donnie still comes back to
the Mission. I stop by to say hi and
sometimes I come to classes. Tere
was one on restoring relationships and
making peace with people that I had
taken once but decided to do again. It
teaches you how to resolve a problem
with someone rather than getting mad
or ghting and getting hurt.
