John 21:1-19

21 Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee.[a] It happened this way: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus[b]), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. 3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. 5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

“No,” they answered. 6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.[c] 9 When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.

10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his

disciples after he was raised from the dead.

Jesus Reinstates Peter 15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” 16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” 17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.

18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”

Three signs that God is at work in your life. • A personal commitment to

Jesus Christ • Transforming work of the

Holy Spirit • The ‘I’ll do this until I die’

Christianity

1. A personal commitment to Jesus Christ

• In today’s gospel we heard the words of Jesus to Peter ‘Follow me’

• Following Jesus Christ usually involves repentance

• Whether you like it or not, Jesus ministry starts by calling people to repent.

• When Peter first met Jesus

he realized how sinful he himself was.

Call to repentance (Matthew 4:17)

From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

Quote

• Other examples in the bible coming face to face with a Holy God include:

Call of Peter (Luke 5:8-9))

When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken

Moses at the Burning Bush (Exodus 3:3

“Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”

John in revelation (Revelation 1)

17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead.

Call of Isaiah (Isaiah 6)

“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”

• When God confronts and calls us, he does it because he wants us to respond.

God’s love for us 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Three signs that God is at work in your life. 1. Personal Commitment to Jesus Christ 2. Transforming work of the Holy Spirit

1. Personal Commitment to Jesus Christ 2. Transforming work of the Holy Spirit Individually

• You can follow the life of Peter and see how he was being transformed.

From brash Fisherman -> Pillar of the Church

• God wants to transform us individually and as a church.

• When we become disciples of Jesus Christ his Holy Spirit comes and lives in us

• The Holy Spirit to change us from the inside.

• We begin to take on the character and Image of our creator

Fruit of the spirit (Galatians 5: 22)

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control;

• The Transformation is continual.

Transformation (2 Corinthians 4)

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

When I became a Christian, my sister tells me I became a much more pleasant person.

1. Personal call

2. Transforming work of the Holy Spirit

Together • Not only did Peter have a

personal transformation, he was part of a group that all experienced the Holy spirit

Quote

The Day of Pentecost (Acts 2)

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.

• As a church, we too must be open to transformation by the Holy Spirit. Some people call this transformation ‘renewal’.

• Renewal isn’t just for the day of Pentecost. It’s for us today too.

• Here’s how John Wesley records God powerfully moving in one of their early prayer meetings.

Quote

Jan 1st 1739 Wesleys and Whitefield (68 altogether)

Mr. Hall, Kinchin, Ingham, Whitefield, Hitchins, and my brother Charles were present . . . in Fetter Lane, with about sixty of our brethren. About three in the morning, as we were continuing instant in prayer, the power of God came mightily upon us, insomuch that many cried out for exceeding joy, and many fell to the ground. As soon as we were recovered a little from that awe and amazement at the presence of his majesty, we broke out with one voice, “We praise Thee, O God, we acknowledge Thee to be the Lord”.

(Te Deum)

Three signs that God is at work in your life. 1. Personal call 2. Transforming work of the Holy Spirit 3. The ‘I’ll do this until I die’ Christianity

1. Personal call 2. Transforming work of the Holy Spirit 3. The ‘I’ll do this until I die’ Christianity • In our Gospel reading, we see

Peter going back to his ‘old trade’ - Fishing.

Going Fishing (John 21:3)

“I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

• As we know, that was not God’s plan for Peter

• For Peter there is no retirement, no Giving up.

Jesus on the shore (John 21:5)

5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

“No,” they answered.

6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

• Jesus encounters Peter again almost like Peter’s first call, where he is called to become a fisher of men.

• Peter is given a new calling to look after and feed ‘my lambs’ - God’s work in Peter’s life is not over.

• Jesus still calls Peter to ‘Follow me’.

• The reading even says that Peter will glorify God is his death.

Quote

For us • Remember our first encounter

with Jesus Christ.

• Continue to be passionate and hungry for God

• It’s important that we continue (even in our old age) not to give up.

Peters Death

Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God.

Quote

Be like Paul (2 Timothy 4)

7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing
