Designated a New Town in 1949 and incorporated Laindon and Pitsea.
Basildon Development Corporation was formed to transform the area into a modern new town.
Approval of the first Basildon Master Plan. Predicting a population of 80,000.
Also in 1951 the first New Town residents set up home in Redgrave Road.
Local government district of Basildon formed in 1974, incorporating Billericay and Wickford.
The Master Plan, published in 1977 set the proposed population at 130,000.
Awarded 'Borough' status in 2010 and covers 110 sq km.
The first industrial area was started.
The first junior and infant school at Swan Mead was completed in 1954.
Population grown to 180,000.
Forecast to grow to 200,000 over the next ten years.
