  • East Rochester celebrates seniors in special graduation ceremonyGraduation for the Class of 2020 looked different this year due to COVID-19, but the ER community was still able to come together to celebrate our graduating seniors!

The members of the Class of 2020 gathered outside, while family members remained in their cars to observe the ceremony. Families were able to tune-in through their car radio, and spectators were able to leave their vehicle to move to the stage as their senior crossed.

Throughout his commencement speech, Principal Casey van Harssel used the analogy of the students as authors writing their personal book of life with each new experience.

“As 74 different authors, not one of your stories is identical from birth until this moment in time,” said Mr. van Harssel, describing how each student’s uniqueness has a role in how their story plays out. “It is the story you will write from here forward that will define who you are as an author,” he adds.

Mr. van Harssel also emphasized the importance of connections made and enjoying life, more so than what title you have.

Valedictorian Nazar Blagyy and Salutatorian Morgan Wiater also gave speeches, thanking classmates for the journey they had taken together and offering words of encouragement for their futures.

A recording of the ceremony can be viewed on the ERUFSD Jr./Sr. website, on Facebook and on Twitter. Congratulations to the Class of 2020!!

Congratulations to these students and to the Class of 2020.

2 | East Rochester School District News | Summer 2020

  • The East Rochester community has shown great resiliency throughout the last four months, following the closure of schools in March. Although March 13 marked the final day students and staff spent together within the walls of the East Rochester Union Free School District, teachers and staff found new and creative ways to ensure students remained connected during distance learning.

Initially, the aim of remote learning was to support review of previous concepts and content but, over time, the goal became to deepen student skill and understanding through new learning designed around the most essential standards at each grade level, subject and content area. Teachers held classes via Zoom, utilizing tools such as FlipGrid, iReady, Loom, Google Classroom and Screencastify to engage students with out-of-the-box activities and lesson plans.

Weekly letters with updates from the district, county and state were sent from the Interim Superintendent, Richard Stutzman, as a way to keep families connected and informed on the status of district plans. Administration created fun videos to keep students’ spirits up during times of uncertainty, and teachers visited homes to deliver packages to students, while maintaining social distancing.

Another area the district did not want to see students miss out on this year was the annual recognition that happens each spring. Teachers and staff organized a variety of events- many virtual- and found new ways to recognize students this year. The Class of 2020 celebrated with a senior parade, a video and shared future plans with our community on social media. Fifth graders were recognized through a congratulatory video where they shared some of their favorite memories from elementary school, and kindergarteners celebrated their own graduation by sharing pictures of signs they made.

The Board of Education continued to meet throughout the school closure, using Zoom to conduct and record meetings. They were able to finalize and adopt a budget for 2020-21 that was approved by the community during the June Budget Vote, despite cuts to State aide.

Throughout the summer, the district has continued to review guidance and plan for what the 2020-21 school year will look like. Despite the uncertainty and the changes that have taken place throughout the last few months, one thing has remained clear. The East Rochester community is strong, resilient and we can do anything TOGETHER. #WeAreER

“The Board of Education is extremely grateful for the leadership of Richard Stutzman as interim superintendent over the past 15 months. Dick’s experienced and compassionate leadership during a challenging time of transition was instrumental in bringing the team of teachers, staff and administration together,” said BOE President Jennifer Majewski Lesinski. “We have been so confident to have Dick at the helm during this challenging time with his expertise, depth of knowledge and professional maturity to lead our team through a period of uncertainty and constantly changing mandates. We recognize Dick for his service to ER at a time when our community was most in need. Our schools are in a strong position to grant the leadership reigns to Jim Haugh because of the period of demonstrable growth fostered by Mr. Richard Stutzman.”

Thank you ER staff and volunteersThroughout the past months of remote learning, teachers and staff throughout the district have stepped up to volunteer whenever help was needed.

Food Service staff and volunteers deserve special recognition for stepping up during the school closure, making hundreds of meals each day and handing them out to the community each day between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The district also reached out to the community for volunteers to sew protective masks to support our food service staff. Thank you to the many people involved who helped and were able to provide all staff and volunteers with a mask.

The Buildings and Ground Department worked tirelessly to deep clean and disinfect the entire district over the last four months while students were not in the buildings.

Staff also volunteered time at the end of the academic year, as students came to pick up their belongings that had been left at school. Student belongings were gathered by staff and were delivered to students inside their vehicle’s on pick-up day.

Thank you to everybody who has helped to provide for our students and keep our community safe during these unprecedented times.

ER community goes above and beyond throughout remote learning

    Thank you Mr. Stutzman

  • Moving Up Day was celebrated differently this year, due to COVID-19. A small socially-distanced ceremony was held at the end of May to recognize the 2020 Moving Up Day Court, followed by a celebration created and shared virtually with the rest of the class.

During the ceremony, Mrs. Cicero presented the Court winners with sashes and gift baskets. This year’s court included: Ben Parrone (MUD Prince), Hay Lee Williams (MUD Princess), Mike Raschiatore

(MUD Prince), Macenzie James (MUD Princess), Sean Flanagan (MUD Prince), Jeannalise Gomez (MUD Princess), Cameron Lombard (MUD King), Jena Faucher (MUD Queen) and Chantel McCrea (MUD Bishop).A link to the video can be found on the Jr./Sr. High School website by selecting the “News” tab and visiting the “Class of 2020 Special Recognitions” page.

Elementary Summer ChallengeStudents at the Elementary School have been encouraged to participate in a “Busy Gnomes at Home” summer learning challenge, to keep applying and advancing the skills they have learned during the school year.

The school uses the I-Ready program to give each student a goal of spending 60-90 minutes per subject each week on the online instruction lessons while they are out of school.

As students complete the challenge each week, certificates are sent out to students who achieve the 60-90 minute goal. Students are able to post photos of themselves to the Wall of Fame when they receive their certificates for participation. In the fall, prizes will be handed out to students based on how many certificates they earned during the summer!

Despite remote learning, teachers and staff still found ways to recognize students this spring. Ceremonies became virtual celebrations, future plans were shared, and socially-distanced parades were held in an effort to show students their efforts this year have not gone unnoticed and show them how much the East Rochester community appreciates them.

Seniors celebrate the end of the year during cap and gown paradeEast Rochester Free Union School District seniors gathered at Techniplex on June 18 for the Class of 2020 Senior Parade. During the event, seniors paraded up to the school, past the Ambulance Building, proceeding up to the school to pick up their caps and gowns. Teachers, staff and community members lined the sidewalk to cheer on and say their goodbyes to the class, while maintaining social distancing.

Jr./Sr. High School Principal Casey says the seniors and their families loved being able to recognize the students through a parade, with many suggesting the school hold a senior parade every year moving forward!

The event provided a unique opportunity to celebrate a class who has experienced a very unusual Senior year.

  • ER kindergartener Ryker was diagnosed with Leukemia at the end of January. The past few months have been hard on the Heitsman family, following the diagnosis.

Senior Advisor Hannah Cicero-Ramsey suggested that seniors donate class funds- totaling over $4k- to the family after seeing a post from Christine Heitsman, talking about her son’s battle with cancer. Students were polled on how they would like to use their senior funds, with a resounding majority choosing to donate all funds to Ryker.

“It blew me away,” said Mrs. Cicero-Ramsey. “I couldn’t believe the generosity of the seniors. The students have gone through loss after loss [because of COVID-19], and they still chose to give to this family.”

“We were leaving and he was just starting out and we thought this would help him,” explained Class of 2020 Vice President Cameron Lombard.

“We feel beyond blessed that our community, especially our young adults, are so selfless,” said Christine. Class advisor and class officers presented Ryker and his family with the check during a parade, where seniors and community members came together to celebrate and show support for Ryker. Christine worked with Mrs. Cicero-Ramsey to plan the parade and donation.

Each year, the district selects a Yearbook Dedication Recipient and a Yearbook Recognition Recipient at the junior and senior high school level. Dedication Recipients are members of the teaching or administrative staff and Recognition Recipients are members of the support staff. The senior class chooses recipients for the Senior High School, based on the influence each one has had on the lives of the seniors throughout their high school years. The recipients have helped seniors to learn, grow and thrive during their time at East Rochester High School. Students and staff select the MLA recipients, based on their dedication to MLA.

This year, Mrs. Barnes (7-8 Italian Teacher) and Mrs. Ross (6th Grade Math) were selected as MLA recipients due to their energy in the classroom, dedication to the district and all they do to support students. Physical Education Teacher and Field Hockey Coach Mrs. Caruso was selected as the Dedication Recipient at the Senior High School and Jr./Sr. High School Nurse Mrs. Mayfield was selected as the Recognition Recipient, due to their ability to lift students up and make them feel they can accomplish anything.

The capital improvement project is right on track, given the ability to begin nearly a month ahead of schedule. The Capital Project is slated to be completely finished by March 2021.

Foundation work for the single-point-of-entry has been completed and now the formation of the single-point-of-entry will begin. Single-point-of-entry work is anticipated to be complete by the end of August. Landscaping outside the District Office is anticipated to be completed by the end of July, including a new flagpole positioned at the center of the school and benches outside the District Offices.

Tilework has begun in the high school hallway and will

go throughout the building to the elementary school. Roof replacement for the elementary school was recently completed and has begun above the District Office. Band room renovation is also on schedule, with HVAC and electrical installment beginning soon.

The Maintenance Facility was completely demolished in mid-July and construction in that area will continue throughout the rest of the year and into 2021.

Additionally, the IT project is going well, as cables are run through the entirety of the building. Transformer testing went well and the new generator is on schedule to be installed by the end of August.

Thank you to the ERUFSD community for your support. The East Rochester Union Free School District 2020-21 School Budget passed on June 16.

This year, the district faced a significant budget gap due to the ongoing reductions in state aid, an increase in health insurance costs, limitations due to the NYS tax cap law, as well as the necessity to close down our economy due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, the approved proposal is below the tax cap and maintains current programs and staffing districtwide.

The results of the election are as follows:

School Budget Yes—960 No—211 Board of Education Jennifer Majewski Lesinski- 2023 (three-year term) Matt Hogan- 2023 (three-year term).

At its July 7 re-organization meeting, the Board of Education re-elected Mrs. Majewski Lesninski as President and Mr. Antonicelli, Vice President, for the 2020-21 school year.
