    July 16, 2012

    Dear Colleagues:

Bienvenidos and welcome to New York City for the inaugural East Regional Fatherhood and Healthy FamiliesSummer Institute.

I am pleased to greet you on behalf of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Administrationfor Children and Families Acting Assistant Secretary, George Sheldon and the Region II office, representing NewYork, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

Collaborations and partnerships are essential to our efforts to support and strengthen Families. I am very pleasedthat several components of the Administration for Children and Families (ACF), Region IV and the African AmericanHealthy Marriage Initiative (AAHMI), are partnering with the Fathers and Families Coalition of America and theColumbia University School of Social Work to sponsor this groundbreaking event. This institute offers us anopportunity to recommit ourselves to the vital work that is being done in support of strengthening families, healthymarriages and responsible fatherhood.

Father absence and family breakdown is a growing concern in America; it is an issue that is at the root of manychallenges that children and their families face. When dads aren't around, young people are more likely to drop out

of school, use drugs, be involved in the criminal justice system, and become young parents themselves.Research tells us that fathers have a powerful influence on their childs well-being, including cognitive ability andeducational achievement. For these and so many other reasons, clearly, we want to work to encourage fathers tobe a positive force in their childs life.

One very easy and successful way we can champion father involvement is through Dads Take Your Child toSchool, an effort to encourage fathers to actively participate in their childs education and school. ACF has beenan integral partner with DTYCTS in New York State and New Jersey and I encourage all in attendance to getinvolved with an existing effort or begin one in your State. Last year in NYS, 9000 dads participated. You can find

out more about Dads Take Your Child to School-New York athttp://sites.google.com/site/dtyctsny.

Through the AAHMI, Family Strengthening Coalitions have been formed all across the country. In Region II, wehave established two coalitions; one in New York State and one New Jersey. We meet quarterly and invite your

    participation.

ACF looks forward to supporting your great work. Best wishes for a productive and exciting few days in our greatCity.

    Sincerely,

    Joyce A. ThomasRegional Administrator

Fathers & Families Coalition of AmericaEast Regional Fatherhood & Healthy Families Summer Conference

    Dear Colleagues:

I would like to welcome each of you to this East Regional Fatherhood & Healthy Families Summer Conference

I appreciate the participation here this week of each stakeholder in Americas fatherhood and healthy marriage

and family work. With your help, we will produce a culture change in America a rededication to the values

and commitments supporting Responsible Fatherhood, Healthy Marriages and Strong Families.

This Conference is provides an opportunity to establish the coalitions and partnerships needed in every local

community to design fatherhood service delivery networks that will truly empower fathers, build strong

families and promote healthy marriages and relationships. We count our victories one father at a time, and one

healthy marriage at a time, as we work to engage fathers, mothers and couples in employment, education and

health opportunities that will make a difference in their lives as well as the lives of their children and families.

I commend the Fathers and Families Coalition of America and their partners for sponsoring this event. Let us

create the future together - a future worthy of the fathers, mothers, precious children and families entrusted to

    our stewardship.

May each of you have a wonderful and productive conference.

Raised in East Orange, NJ, Kobie Brown was raised with a strong sense of community and purpose. Raised by amother who was an educator and artist, and a father who was a nancial analyst, who spent his younger years as amember of SNCC (The Student's Non-violent Coordinating Committee), Kobie learned early on that the talents andgifts that he was given should be used to impact and change the world.

Growing up in a h ome "full of books and records", his love for history, the arts and culture came from his family an dprovided the motivation to enter the music industry. Growing up in the hip-hop rich culture of the time, he formedbonds with local talent including: Queen Latifah, Naughty By Nature and The Fugees among others. While studyingEnglish at Morehouse College, he parlayed his relationships into a job work ing at Flavor Unit Records andManagement with Queen Latiah and her business partner, Shakim Compere. At Flavor Unit he was involved ineverything from marketing to producer management and A&R. After leaving Flavor Unit, Kobie went on to workwith the legendary production and songwriting duo, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis before returning to school tocomplete his studies and eventually continuing his career as a m usic executive at Jive Records.

Browns love for lm comes from the potential of marrying the elements of n arrative, music, and motion picture. Butmore importantly, it comes from his upbringing and understanding that "God has gifted each of us with uniquetalents and resources that should be used to breed ideas, opportu nity, success, comfort and life that advancecommunity and humanity."

The path to his rst documentary, Fatherless to Fatherhood, began in the summer of 2008 when Brown began totoy with the idea of compiling a book of testimonials from friends and associates. His rst interview was with aMorehouse college classmate. As the discussion turned to fatherhood and his friend gave his recollection of theoften inexplicable pain resulting from his absent father's shortcomings, Brown began to consider the pervasivenessof father absence and its social, political, emotional and economic implications. It was then that Kobie realized thata documentary lm might be an eective way to address the challenges that many face, but most have thetendency to ignore / sweep under the rug. He began to research and does interviews with various people, fromcelebrities to the common man; Fatherless To Fatherhood is the result. It is a poignant testament to the

importance of the male in the family structure and the results of his presence as well as his absence.Brown uses his childhood teachings, creative abilities, civic commitment and the voices of those in the lm as aplatform in which others can see themselves. "The path of our individual and collective success, and failure, isshaped by the families and communities from whom we evolve. Unfortunately, examples of quality manhood, fatherhood and healthy relationships are not observed, displayed or talked about often enough that they can bereadily identied in communities and households that need them the most. This lm serves to provoke thought, ignite discussion and hopefully engender transformative change around the ideas and practices that many haveassigned to th e value of fatherhood and family."
