Happy New Year! We all tend to set resolutions as we start the new year. Mine is to create more! What's the secret to creativity? Showing up! Yes, that's really it. Actually, I think that's one of the secrets to life in general. Be consistent in showing up. Getting to your creative work only once in awhile won't keep it alive. Make "routine" and "regularity" sacred words. One of the best ways to help yourself create everyday is to craft a starting ritual that you begin to use regularly and routinely. It could be getting a cup of tea, a piece of chocolate and turning on your favorite inspiring music. When your ritual becomes habitual, you will find yourself moving effortlessly from not creating to creating. Make the following pledge: "I will do some creative work everyday, if only for 15 or 20 minutes." Honor your pledge for the next 2 weeks; use your starting ritual and spend 14 consecutive days creating. There is no substitute for showing up. Showing up does not solve every problem, but not showing up ruins everything! Try it! Our January speaker will be Suzi Parron, author of "Barn Quilts and the American Quilt Trail Movement." Remember last January when she tried to come and we had an Atlanta Snowmagedon? Hopefully, the weather will cooperate this year. On my Christmas trip up to Chicago, I saw a few barn quilts on the way and I look forward to hearing her stories about them. Join us on January 30 for a lively and entertaining lecture. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of being your President for 2015. I'm eagerly anticipating an exciting year with all my quilty friends!

Two Months to Finish Your Challenge Quilt! East Cobb Quilters’ Guild Challenge – 2015 Participating in the annual guild challenge gives members a chance to play with a new technique, experiment with unusual color or fabric combinations, or perfect a favorite quilting theme or method. I’m so excited about seeing the creativity of our guild members when the challenge quilts are shown in February! Don’t Forget Challenge quilts will be exhibited at the February evening and daytime guild meetings! Remember to pay your dues for 2015 so you can participate in the challenge. Challenge Rules – Inspired by Travel Let memories of travel inspire your 2015 guild challenge quilt. The travel that inspires your quilt can be anything from a cruise around the world to a visit to a nearby town. This travel can be a vacation, work-related trip, travel to see family, or any other kind of travel. This trip must be one you have taken, not one you intend to take in the future. Your quilt label must indicate the name of the place you visited and the year of the visit (e.g., Alaska, 2010; Grandma’s Farm, 1962). Your quilt must measure between 30 inches and 60 inches on each side. Your quilt must be a quilt; that is, it has three layers and is quilted. Your quilt must be made between February 28, 2014, and the guild meetings in February 2015. Challenge quilts are due at the guild meetings in February 2015. Only guild members who are current on their dues are eligible to participate in the challenge. Voting Procedure Guild members at the Friday morning meeting in February 2015 will vote for their favorite eight quilts. Challenge quilts from the Thursday night meeting will be collected and included in voting on Friday morning. The eight quilts selected will be entered into the AQS show that features guild challenges. (The AQS is the source of the rules regarding dimension, quilting, etc.) Voting in 2015 will be anonymous. That is, you won’t know who made each quilt until voting is completed. Each quilt must be accompanied by a typed or printed (preferably not hand written) brief description of or story about the quilt – what motivated you, why you were inspired by this trip, etc. This description must be on paper and attached to the quilt back by a straight pin or safety pin. One person will read the description/story for each quilt before voting takes place. The identities of the quilt makers entering the challenge will be revealed after voting is complete. If you have questions, please contact Stella Lang.

Renew Your Membership! It's time to renew your membership. Don't miss out on any of the guild's programs and activities! Forms are available on the guild website. 2015 membership cards for those who have already renewed, will be mailed in late January.

New Bees! Happy New Year to all the Bee groups! I am looking forward to 2015, and charging forward with Bee activity for 2015. As Guild membership grows we should also have more bee groups (in my opinion!). Ideas, suggestions is as easy as sending a note my way. To all the Guild members, smooth sailing and safe travels through the year!
