VUYO BENCHPRESSES HIS WAY TO VICTORYWheelchair-bound Vuyolwethu Nduzul-wana has a dream – to represent his country at the Paralympic Games. The talented East London-based powerlifter is working hard to achieve his goal. “Coach Vuyo” who is employed at Beaconhurst as a sports administrator and coach, is a victim of Spina Bifida, a congenital defect of the spine. Vuyo took part in the Eastern Cape Weightlifting Championships in Port Elizabeth last month. With no disabled competitions in the Eastern Cape, Coach Vuyo was competing against able-bodied athletes for the first time ever. He bench-pressed an impressive 110kg in the 60 – 66kg weight division, taking home the gold medal in his division. The next event he is scheduled to take part in is the Eastern Cape Champs in August, thereafter he hopes to be considered to compete for the SA team at the All-Africa games later on this year. Coach Vuyo was given an wheelchair by a parent at Beaconhurst. Mrs Angie Moodley had noticed that Coach Vuyo was struggling with his current wheelchair – a few weeks later Bolton and Midlane called

him to collect his wheelchair. Coach Vuyo travel by wheelchair between the school and the gym during his off hours, this helps him keep up his training too. Coach Vuyo coaches various school teams and manages others. He has a Level 2 cricket coaching qualification, is a C level umpire and is part of the Boksmart programme for rugby. Coach Vuyo has a lot of experience in various coaching levels. Coach Vuyo says: “I really enjoy my job at Beaconhurst; everyone here is grea and I enjoy what I am doing. They give me the freedom to compete and chase my dreams while allowing me to practice my passion of coaching sport to young kids.”

COMPUTER TALENT SEARCH OLYMPIADAt the end of the first term, Beaconhurst learners had the opportunity to take part in the annual Computer Talent Search Olympiad. The biker is the only jacket you’ll never tire of and certainly won’t

part with it. Ever!

Babe in a biker jacket - who can forget Sandra Dee’s transformation from prissy prom queen to big-time punk princess in Grease?

Once upon a time, biker jackets were the territory of those hairy, tattooed blokes on Harleys - the ones you didn’t take home to meet the folks! Now the motorcycle jacket has evolved into a fashion must. It’s an instant style boost with its unmistakable surfeit of zips, snaps, studs and hardware plus quilted patches in that boxy arrogant mannish cut that simply goes with everything and suits everyone.

READING WEEK IPAD TEACHER TRAINING

GRADE R EASTER TEA

Hudson Park Primary’s annual Reading Week took place at the end of the first term. Mrs Morrell, the school librarian, started off by “banning” some of the most popular books in the library. The banning caused much indignation which showed us how many children in our school love reading! They were to be freed at the end of the week, providing we raised over R2500 and received 250 book donations. The great news is

that over R4500 was raised for new books and over 350 beautiful books were donated, leading to the liberation of the banned books! Some highlights were meeting British author of children’s books, Alex Milway, via Skype; every day our amazingly talented Mystery Readers captivated children with a great story and many brave readers entered “banned” areas (such as the staff car park) to read their books during break time.

Our Senior Primary teachers attended their second iPad training session with Wendy Hindle of ThinkAhead. Many new skills were learnt – from turning the iPad on to taking screen grabs and Air Dropping them to other iPads.

Hudson Park’s Grade R’s entertained their families with joyful songs celebrating Easter. It was a pleasure to see the school’s main hall filled with supportive and loving family members. Great happiness was shared by all.

Mrs Cotterell entertained the children as she read out loud during break.

The Senior Primary teachers are getting to grips with their new iPads.

Mr Gallagher dressed up as Wally from the “Where’s Wally” series of books, and enthralled the children with a break time read out loud session.

Mrs Heaton, the deputy principal, was caught reading a banned book! Some of the school’s favourite books were banned by Mrs Morrell, the school librarian, during Reading Week.

CAMBRIDGE SHINES AT U19 BOWLSSeven Cambridge High School pupils participated as part of the Border u19 bowls team that competed at an interprovincial competition held in Bloemfontein during the April holidays. Edward Schemel, Jayson Marriott, Chad Dawson, Craig Pornss, Zimi Jikwa, Mbali Gxekwa and Sisipho Rebe, along with pupils from KHS and Dale, and under the leadership of Brian Mclean and Warrick Osmond, comprised the u19 teams that participated for Border. The tournament was held from the 6th

to 11th April. The Boys’ team, consisting of Edward, Jayson, Chad and Craig, did particularly well winning 5 of their 7 matches to take them through to the semi-finals. Unfortunately they lost to Eastern Gauteng, to place 3rd overall and receive the bronze medal. This is the first medal ever won by Border at provincial u19 level. Cambridge is very proud of these talented young bowlers and hopes to see more wonderful achievements in the future.

Back row: Craig Pornss (Third from left), Jayson Marriott (centre), Chad Dawson (Third from right), Edward Schemel (Second fraom right). Front row: Mbali Gxekwa (Third from left), Zimi Jikwa (centre), Sisipho Rebe (Second from right).

BEACH EXCURSIONTowards the end of last term, Grade 10 Life Science pupils from Cambridge High School visited Nahoon Beach as part of their Ecology Practical Excursion.

A wonderful time was had by all those involved, and much was learnt. Pupils had the opportunity to study the rock pools and all the interesting creatures found there.

OPEN DAYOn 22 April, Cambridge High School held its annual Open Day. This gave Grade 7 pupils from Cambridge Primary School the opportunity to see the school and get a taste of what high school life is about. Staff, prefects’ and pupils helped to make the day fun and educational. We look forward to seeing the Grade 7’s at Cambridge High next year.

XHOSA CULTURAL EVENINGOn 22 April, the Xhosa Cultural Society hosted a Cultural Evening. This evening showcased a number of talented learners and performances included dancing, singing, acting and even a Traditional Dress fashion show. The evening was a great success and one looks forward to the next one.

GRADE 9 ENTREPRENEURS DAY 2015Students experienced the simulation of being entrepreneurs through the Business Simulation game, and had a great deal of fun while learning. Banango Traders was a trading business selling “Banango” (a banana and mango mix) on the beach. The learners set up the “virtual” business, investigated the demand and supply of products and the setting of the correct price, looked into the business plan, demonstrated the accounting theory and concepts, recorded, interpreted and made decisions on financial data while displaying an understanding of social responsibility. They also look at characteristics and skills of entrepreneurs, conducted a needs-analysis based on own and borrowed capital, and had to plan and act according

to a budget. The day was lead by the Johannesburg School on Finance and the EMS teachers and was a great success. Many thanks to all teachers, parents and learners involved in making this opportunity possible.

PORT REX LIONSEISTEDDFODD 2015Zukhanye Nonose in Grade 12 achieved a Gold Award for Vocal Solo in the under 18 division at the Annual Port Rex Lions Eisteddfodd. Congratulations Zukhanye! Thank you to Ms T Daldorf for her time dedication in coaching Zukhanye.

SPORTPort Rex Technical High School played Netball, Hockey and Rugby matches against Stirling.

OPEN EVENING 2015On 23 April 2015 Port Rex held a very successful Open Evening with over 500 Grade 7’s and their parents attending in order to find out more about Port Rex Technical High School. Hosted by our team of staff members and learners, Grade 7 learners were able to talk to and meet learners who were involved in each and every subject, activity or sport at school in order to find out whether they were technically inclined. A presentation by Mr Piderit, the

Headmaster, included informa...tion on what attending a Technical school entailed, which subjects are of importance, and the school fees. The Grade 7’s had the opportunity to visit each and every one of the workshops on the campus where the specialised equipment was demonstrated. Armed with prospectuses and information of the courses we offer, prospective learners left after a very informative evening.
