Six Locals Win Photo Contest

The Monthly Grapevine is pleased to announce the winners of its First Annual Photo Contest, co-sponsored by East County Historical Society.

We had many great photos depicting East Contra Costa County submitted and the six photos chosen will appear on the cover of upcoming editions of The Monthly Grapevine; three East County Edition covers and three Delta Edition covers.

First place for the East County Edition was a photo titled “Harbour, Antioch California” by Stephen Hollingsworth, second place winner was a photo titled “Fishing at the Antioch/Oakley Shoreline” by Cheryl Breitenbucher and third place was a photo titled “Every Serviceman is a Hero” by Teri Van Ausdal.

First place for the Delta Edition was a photo titled “Los Vaqueros Watershed” by Linda Kerley, second place winner was a photo titled “Dormant Icons” by John Goodner and third place was a photo titled “Rubies Peeking through the Vine” by Barbara Frantz.

You can preview these photos on page 33 of this issue where you will also find

the names of our six honorable mention awards.

All of the photos entered will now become a part of our County’s history because they will be placed in an album for visitors to view at The East County Historical Society. Thank you to everyone who entered.

A Place in the ShadeThe calendar says Summer is right around the corner, yet 2011 seems to be bringing us unpredictable weather patterns. Still, those of us who live in the East County know that the inevitable hot Summer days are right around the corner so it’s time to get things ready for the heat. What a great time to look in on a local business that can help us do just that.

Mark Sargent, owner of Bright Ideas Design Center, has been in business since 1995. The design center is located at 5085 Lone Tree Way in Antioch. I peeked in to take a look around and was greeted by their friendly staff. This was really a nice touch to be able to talk to someone who knew so much about the business without a huge sales pitch. Mark prides himself in offering the best customer service possible and it clearly shows when the staff delivers that same message.

I learned that his specialty is Alumawood Patio Covers and Patio Enclosures. First

and foremost, the material he uses to build these beautiful additions to your home is made out of aluminum. That means it won’t burn, get termites, crack, peel, warp or rot. You don’t have to cut down any trees, and each component of your patio cover is engineered to assemble with flawless fit and finish. You can’t believe it when you see it; it really looks like wood.

After wandering around their store, I went home and got on the web to see some of the actual work they have done. I highly recommend you check out their web site at www.brightideadesigncenter.com and take the same tour I took. You can design any kind of covering or enclosure you want. They have A-frame, lattice, and free-standing, full enclosures and covers built side by side. I can’t believe what a difference it makes to your home. Many of those beautiful backyards that you see while playing golf on the three courses of Brentwood are the work of Bright Ideas.

Their ad says “Let It Rain…Let it Shine…We’ve got you covered. Since the backyard parties are just around the corner, I can’t think of a better way to bring a little bit of shade to your back yard. It is just beautiful when it is done, and with our temperatures reaching the 100 mark in the summer,

this is certainly a great way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends.

I asked a few questions about this remarkable Alumawood product, like does it dent, how long does it take, what kind of warrantee do they offer and do I need to get a permit? It doesn’t usually dent, but will be replaced if it happens. They receive weekly shipments and can usually install in one to three days. The ten year limited warrantee covers the paint from peeling, cracking or warping. And finally, you do need to get a permit, but they take care of all the paperwork for you. Moving With ChildrenMoving is an exciting time full of commotion that can be tough on everyone, including the children. The impact the move will have on kids usually is age-related. Babies and toddlers tend to deal well. Young children will have some difficulty with moving, while adolescents may resist and often resent the move. • Familiarize the children with the new location by providing them with exciting information about the area.

• Make sure everyone has packed and clearly labeled their belongings. Keep the

most-used items easily accessible. For a small child, this could include a few favorite toys or a security item like a blanket.

Moving Babies & Toddlers - Babies and toddlers typically are easy to move, but they also can become confused or scared. Consider the following tips for them:

• Pack their rooms last and as close to moving day as possible. Keep favorite toys and other must-haves close at hand.

• Try to stick to the established routines like lunchtime and naptime.

Fuel Savings Tips as Gas Prices SoarWith gas prices exceeding four dollars a gallon in many parts of the country, the Car Care Council is offering gas-saving maintenance and driving tips that really work. Record gas prices make it the perfect yime to “Be Car Care Aware.”

“Millions of dollars worth of gasoline is wasted every day by motorists, because simple and inexpensive vehicle maintenance is neglected,” said Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council. “Loose or missing gas caps, under-inflated tires, worn spark plugs and dirty air filters all contribute to poor fuel economy.”

The Car Care Council offers these fuel-saving tips:

Vehicle gas caps – About 17 percent of the vehicles on the roads have gas caps that are either damaged, loose or are missing altogether, causing 147 million gallons of gas to vaporize every year.

Under inflated tires – When tires aren’t inflated properly it’s like driving with the parking brake on and can cost a mile or two per gallon.

Worn spark plugs – A vehicle can have either four, six or eight spark plugs, which fire as many as 3 million times every 1,000 miles, resulting in a lot of heat and electrical and chemical erosion. A dirty spark plug causes misfiring, which wastes fuel. Spark plugs need to be replaced regularly.

Dirty air filters – An air filter that is clogged with dirt, dust and bugs chokes off the air and creates a “rich” mixture – too much gas being burned for the amount of air, which wastes gas and causes the engine to lose power. Fuel-saving driving tips include:

Don’t be an aggressive driver – Aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by as much as 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent on city streets, which results in 7 to 49 cents per gallon.

Avoid excessive idling – Sitting idle gets zero miles per gallon. Letting the vehicle warm up for one to two minutes is sufficient.

Observe the speed limit – Gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. Each mph driven over 60 will result in an additional 10 cents per gallon. To maintain a constant speed on the highway, cruise control is recommended.

DIG was founded in June 1988 by Pat Moore. It started with a membership of about fourteen and has grown to one hundred at present. Members come from all over east county and elsewhere. Anyone is eligible to join and the dues are $15.00 per year.

Our purpose is to encourage interest in gardening through education and the beautification of the community. The mission of DIG is donating garden books, tapes and videos to the local library, providing scholarships to local students, hosting informational speakers and participating in the community gardening projects. Our annual fundraiser/plant sale consists of 10,000 plants. (Annuals and perennials, flowers, trees, herbs, tomatoes, cacti and succulents.
