We see conservancy workers every day, but do we really pay attention to them? We take our estate cleanliness for granted, but it is because of the efforts of our cleaners that we wake up to clean streets. They work in the early morning, out of sight of most residents.

These workers do not just keep our estate clean – some of them are the eyes and ears of the police, helping to make East Coast a safer place for everybody. In 2008, East Coast Town Council (ECTC) and Bedok Police Division (BPD) launched the Workers-on-Watch (WOW) Community Safety and Security Programme (CSSP). From just 30 cleaners in 2008, almost 300 cleaners from several other Town Councils have been trained under WOW this year.

DO YOUR PART AS A RESIDENT OF OUR TOWNAlthough we have a team of dedicated conservancy workers, residents should do their part too. Dispose of your waste properly, do not litter, and clean up after your pets. Let’s keep East Coast clean together!

Estate upgrading such as the Lift Upgrading Programme (LUP) and Neighbourhood Renewal Programme (NRP) have seen ECTC’s operational and maintenance costs rising. As we invest in our estate and the well-being of the East Coast community, electricity consumption is likely to increase with the installation of more amenities.

ECTC is continuously looking into more innovative and efficient methods to manage our costs. Rising electricity tariffs have led us to implementing measures such as the installation of energy-conserving LED lights and the potential harnessing of solar energy. Our cleaners, besides being part of initiatives like WOW, also attend training courses on how to mechanise operations to increase productivity.

Ms Ng Lee Boon, 61, has lived in her Bedok flat for five years, and the Home Improvement Programme (HIP) upgrading works in her home have recently been completed. Under Enhancement for Active Seniors (EASE), Ms Ng’s flat now has various items such as a new door, refuse chute and grab bars in the toilet. She is very happy with the upgrade, which took about ten days to be completed.

Besides having a safer and more comfortable home to live in, the upgrading has helped to bring Ms Ng closer to her neighbours, Mr Larry Lim and Mdm Rubinah bte Rapal. Mr Lim, 49, and Mdm Rubinah, 62, also have had various items installed in their flats under EASE, and the neighbours bonded over this. Ms Ng said, “Due to the dust from the renovating works, we all kept our doors open and went out to the corridors for fresh air. Naturally, we struck up conversations, and now we have become good friends! Thanks to HIP, I feel like a bit of the old kampung spirit has been restored!”

EAST COAST 3G FAMILY & WELLNESS DAY

Three generations of East Coast residents got together on 20 October for an afternoon of fun and bonding. Each division showed off their respective cheers, setting the enthusiastic atmosphere. Everyone took part in a record-breaking Ketchup Dance warm-up exercise, joined by Members of Parliament Mr Lim Swee Say, Mr Lee Yi Shyan, Dr Mohd Maliki Osman and Ms Jessica Tan. Fun was had by all during the telematches, before an aerial group photo was taken. The event was a great opportunity for residents to foster closer bonds with one another and engage with their Members of Parliament, as well as encourage active living in seniors.

Pet advocates? Pet activists? Nope, these enthusiastic, pet-loving people are from Temasek Junior College! Earlier this year, they carried out a project aimed at informing and educating young children about being responsible pet owners and the consequences of pet abandonment.

Doing away with the conventional way of giving a talk or an exhibition, they ventured into educating the children right in the kindergarten with interesting and engaging lessons. By modifying the ‘Tic Tac Toe’ game at the playground near the kindergarten, the students also reached out to other children with their message.

Not only did these students combine play and learning into one, they also highlighted a key issue in today’s Singapore. Working hand in hand with East Coast Town Council and the Bedok PCF Kindergarten, these students have definitely worked hard to make a difference in their community!

Together with family members, children in Kampong Chai Chee got to enjoy a day dedicated to them on 28 September. They were treated to dance performances by fellow young residents at Kampong Chai Chee CC, and learnt how to make clay art. Laughter and excited shouts filled the air as they took turns on the choo-choo train and inflatable slides, and played games at various booths. Member of Parliament Mr Lee Yi Shyan was all smiles as he had fun together with the children, showing that he is still young at heart!

CHILDREN’S DREAMLANDOn the evening of 12 October, children in Fengshan entered a dreamland at the Children’s Day Party at Fengshan CC, with some even turning up in pyjamas. There was also an inflatable bouncy castle, Wii and carnival games and face painting for nonstop entertainment. Member of Parliament Mr Raymond Lim ‘refereed’ pillow fights between children, and they also took part in contests such as sheep counting and “Draw Your Dream House”. It was a dreamland-themed party, but no one was asleep, that was for sure!

MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL

STREET PARTYJoo Chiat residents came together on 12 October for a street party at East Coast Terrace Park. There were tea brewing and tai chi demonstrations by residents, and Member of Parliament Mr Charles Chong planted a tree in the park as a symbolic gesture to commemorate the community’s efforts in beautifying the estate. Organised by Siglap South Zone 1 Neighbourhood Committee, the street party was a platform for private estate residents to mingle and build friendships with their neighbours who reside in the only four public housing blocks in Joo Chiat.

Siglap CC was lit up with colourful lanterns on 14 September for an evening of joyful Mid-Autumn celebrations. Member of Parliament Dr Mohd Maliki Osman led a lantern procession around Siglap CC, taking the time to interact with residents. At the CC, residents were treated to musical performances and took part in activities such as water dunking and guessing lantern riddles. They formed teams to compete in pomelo-peeling and mooncake-making competitions, and also displayed their creativity, decorating and penning their wishes on 10 large lanterns.
