Do you use a GPS? They’re in every new car, and on many an iPhone. But they work only if you know where you’re going. Once you know, your handy GPS will guide you there.

East Bay Bridal is your GPS to getting to your wedding. But still, you have to know where you’re going. The first item on our Planning Checklist (page 4) advises new brides to:

• Determine the type of wedding you want to have. Simple words, but so much to consider! Yes, it’s about preferences for formality or informality, and favorite colors and flowers. But it’s very deeply about family members, ethnic and religious traditions, and your understanding of matrimony.

• Determine your budget. Big decisions here! What you can afford? How much can your family assist? Money is an awkward topic for many of us, so in determining your budget, be determined to have the conversations -- between you and your fiancé and between you and your parents – with realism, patience and loving acceptance.

Once you get those essential questions answered, you’ve got your bridal GPS course set! Now East Bay Bridal becomes an ideal “map” with which to locate the specialists who will help you down the road to your destination: One Great Wedding!

That’s why we distribute 20,000 copies of each issue, free of charge, at major bridal shows in the East Bay as well as through selected bridal vendors.

Have a wonderful trip through the East Bay to your wedding day – I trust it will be just the first stop for you and your new spouse, as you continue on the journey of a lifetime.

Wishing you many years of happiness in your marriage,

The wedding seating chart: It’s more like a

puzzle sometimes. Figuring out who should

sit with whom can be a stressful challenge,

especially amidst the other final plans.

Though its tough to have a seating chart

that is set in stone, due to last-minute

cancellations and other finalizations,

there are ways to lighten the burden and

minimize the impact if something doesn’t

go according to plan.

The first step, when figuring out whom

to sit where, is to look at the floor plan

of the venue and stick to it as best as

you can. “The best way to handle the

seating chart is to stick to the floor plan.

The caterer is the one who knows best

– the size, the dimensions, how the room

works best. This is not only in the best

interest of the guests but also the wait

staff,” says Francesca Leonardini, a wedding

coordinator at Dazzling Affairs in New

York.

Start by categorizing all of your guests

based on whom you think should sit

together. Then look at the floor plan and

put the youngest guests closest to the

band. Work backward and put the oldest

guests, such as grandparents, as far away

from the band as possible so that the

noise is not a bother.

Next, you should put the tables with close

family members around the bridal party.

Fill in the rest of friends and family into the

other tables.

Also decide how you want to divide the

guests. For some younger, more energetic

weddings, it might be OK to mix it up and

let people mingle. In other situations, it’s

better to let people sit with the people

they know to give them a chance to

spend time with friends. “Come up with a

unified theme. Some people feel it’s more

important to have families together, while

other people have a lot of work colleagues

and friends, so they categorize the tables

that way. Every wedding is really specific

to the couple,” says Carrie Zack, an event

coordinator and owner of Carrie Zack

Events in Los Angeles.

If the wedding is on the larger side, it

is wise to write out each table on a

separate sheet of paper, so that you can

play around with different combinations

before finalizing the chart. As people

start replying, you can color code the

response cards and keep track of who

you want sitting together, and sometimes

more importantly, who you have to keep

separate. In some situations, this can

mean separating divorced parents, families

who don’t get along, or friends who have

clashing personalities.

In any case, it’s important to have the

floor plan handy so you can put tables on

opposite sides of the room if necessary.

“Avoid all kinds of confrontation,” says

Leonardini. “People have a tendency to

have one too many drinks, and things

come out. On the floor plan, if people

[who don’t get along] are kept apart they

won’t run into each other as much.”

By breaking it down, and taking each step

of the seating chart process in stride, it can

be a simple job that doesn’t take much

time at all. With all of the other stresses

that come with planning a wedding, you

can rest easy and check this task off of

your to-do list.

I love photographing weddings. It is a joyous time that people let me share in that special moment and I happen to be

a lucky witness to it. My style is a mergence of traditional and photojournalism. I love capturing the little details and expressions of the events of the day. I love setting up the scene for my couples

and then stepping back and watch what unfolds and taking an image at that precise moment. There is nothing more precious than two people sharing their love for one another than at their wedding. I feel privileged when a couple lets me in on their day.www.connielealphotography.com

925-550-8506

While still steeped in tradition, weddings are seeing one custom take a bow for some impatient couples: Waiting until the ceremony for the long-awaited moment to see each other in wedding attire. In the days of arranged marriages, this concept played out well so a groom wouldn’t stop the engagement if his fiancé failed to be a beauty.

In the case of 21st century practicality, when couples-to-be are renting reception halls or ballrooms by the hour, the notion of missing out on the party of a lifetime while taking photos isn’t so appealing.

“We’re seeing more and more brides and grooms realize that this day goes by fairly quickly and they really just want to be part of that cocktail hour with their friends and family,” says Mary Litzsinger, wedding coordinator and owner of VP Events Inc., Westlake Village, Calif.

Litzsinger says at least half of her clients are opting for the less traditional route.

Photographers are noticing an up-tick in the trend, noting that it even affords them a greater opportunity to capture some magical photos.

“At the wedding itself, people may act differently since they’re on display,” says John C. Lewis, a photographer based in Newberry Park, Calif. “But we can capture a

beautiful moment of the first sighting when it seems more natural and relaxed before the wedding.”

Also changing are the photo packages available to modern couples. Again, tradition dictates that some newlyweds will pick the gilded leather bridal album. The digital age has given an update to the old school, slip-in photo album, which now utilizes flush mount techniques. Actual photographs are printed on quality paper on par with traditional photographs, and then the pages are heat-mounted into a book by a professional album company, according to Samantha Hines, co-owner of Digishots Photography.

The result looks more like a timeless coffee table book. Photographers can have fun creating background pictures printed in panoramic form, and also can mount on other pictures for a collage effect.

“A lot more brides are looking for more than photojournalism and candid photography,” Litzsigner says. “They’re wanting that which is more artistic and looking for photographers to turn their wedding photos into a piece of art.”

Like art, these albums can cost a mighty sum. At Digishots, packages including the albums range from $2,300 to $4,900. Indeed, spending money is one constant that won’t change when it comes to throwing weddings.

Bridal Fashion Trend Report

Bridal Fashion Trend Report

L ast October, the bridal runways presented some of the most

gorgeous gowns ever for 2011. Here’s a roundup of the best trends and looks to help you pick your dream wedding dress.

Ultra-feminine Frills

Ruffles and ribbons and bows, oh my! Lots of girly touches grace dresses in almost every designer’s collection this year, giving the modern princess bride tons of lovely choices. Flattering ruching, elegant draping, and three-dimensional details also decorate bodices, skirts, or the entire gown.

Trumpet/Mermaid Skirts

Whether featuring a sophisticated elongated shape or sexy hourglass form, dresses that hug the body from the bustline to the hips and flare out into fuller skirts at the bottom dominated the runway and are sure to be a favorite this year. The fabulous of the fluted skirts are adorned with airy tiers, layers of tulle, dustings of sequin, sculpted pleats, or tumbles of ruffles.

Sheath Silhouettes

Romantic and chic, the sheath dress offers gentle curves, so it compliments almost every bride. This timeless style is updated in stunning designs with lace or beading, as well as more understated gowns in fluid fabrics or regal structure.

Bridal FashionA-line Favorite

This shape has always been loved for its versatility with a variety of fabrics and suitability for almost every body type. Now, it’s adored for its fashion-forward designs. This season, standout “A”-shaped dresses have skirts of tufted or tiered fabric, flurries of flowers, or sleek satin that are paired with corset bodices or flower-accented sweetheart necklines. Waistlines are defined by ribbons, bows, or beading.

Two-in-One Gowns

For the bride who wants to wear two different dresses on her Big Day, the two-piece gown is both cleverly stylish and practical. This design lets the bride go down the aisle in a formal gown, then remove the beautifu skirt to reveal a sassy shorter dress underneath for the reception.

Bridal Blue or Blush

Delicate pastel blues and subtle blush hues prove that a wedding dress can

be bridal-y without having to be white. Wedding dress designers have played with colors for years, but it looks like they’ve finally found the tones that are the prefect alternative to ivory for both the traditional and contemporary bride.

Lighting is one of the most important elements for a gorgeous party. Here’s how to make your table shine.

Relying on house lighting can only get you so far in creating the right mood. Light switches and recessed lights can’t properly accent the dance floor, the floral arrangements and even the sumptuous buffet a couple may have planned. Hiring an illumination professional can ensure guests will “ooh” and “aah” once they arrive at the ceremony and can help couples stamp their signature on the happy affair.

“Lighting helps create contrasts at a wedding in terms of colors, textures and shapes, making a beautiful visual statement,” says Lani Ballonoff, owner of LBPS Events in Santa Barbara, Calif., which specializes in wedding production services. “We’re finding that it’s becoming more popular. Couples are thinking about it ahead of time instead of at the last minute.”

Ballonoff, who has a background in theatrical design, suggests accenting some things, but not everything. Washing the room in a certain color, such as amber or peach, can be flattering for skin tones and create a warm glow to make guests feel comfortable. But, the color may not do justice for those orchid centerpieces. And darker shades, such as a purple wash, can make a green salad look gray and un-appetizing.

Pin spots, which are focused beams of light

that shine directly onto an object, are a better way to highlight flowers, food and even bars and make the items pop.

For the dance floor, couples have options that extend beyond the disco ball, whose presence at weddings is more of a mockery these days. Pattern projection, with the help of gobos, or circular stencils capped over a light, can help create a focal point and separates the dance floor from the reception. Couples can choose to have their monograms or messages projected on the dance floor. Images can also relate to the theme of the wedding, such as a vine pattern for a wedding taking place in wine country.

The cost for lighting can vary depending on the wedding and it’s size. Ballonoff says his fees for weddings have averaged $3500. He points out that sometimes brides, looking for a venue that can accommadate a lot of people, can choose a less expensive, non-descript place and let the lighting specialists transform it into a memorable backdrop with pin spots and even the draping of fabric.

“We can recreate anything into something special,” Ballonoff says.

To keep costs in check, as with planning your wedding, decide your honeymoon must-haves (keeping in mind that everything cannot be a must-have) and plan your trip around those details. You both want to spend time lying on a beach watching palm trees sway? Terrific. Realize that you don’t have to go to Hawaii to have that.

“Your honeymoon will be one of the most memorable vacations of your life, so don’t leave any part of the planning to chance,” says Michael Flory, vice president of Classic Vacations, San Jose, Calif. Here are his five honeymoon pitfalls to avoid:

1. More than money. Price should not be your top criterion when planning your vacation. Think instead about how you want to feel and what you want to do.

2. By the book. Don’t wait until the last minute to book the trip in hopes of getting a better deal. Doing so can lead to disappointment, as

the best properties and the most exclusive activities have limited space and sell out early.

3. Remember the crowds. If you’re planning a summer honeymoon, keep in mind that you may be traveling during peak season for family vacations. If you want peace and seclusion, try a less family oriented hotel or destination, or honeymoon during the off-season.

4. Plan plans ahead. Booking at least a couple of things before you leave means you’ll guarantee your place in popular activities and spend more time enjoying your vacation once you’re there, rather than continuing to plan it.

5. Ask and receive. The choices for destinations, properties and tours are countless for honeymooners. Don’t spend all your planning time looking at brochures. Talk to friends and colleagues for recommendations, and contact a travel professional for assistance in making the right decisions.

Marriage LicensesBy Lindsay Gower

It’s the must-have accessory for every bride: A Marriage License! So let’s review the basics you need to know about getting licensed to wed.

Getting the License

Both bride and groom must go, in person together, to a County Clerk’s office. In California, you can go to the Clerk’s Office in any county; it does not need to be the county in which you are having the wedding. Neither of you needs to be a California resident to apply for a California marriage license. No blood test or medical exam is required and there is no waiting period: You apply, pay, and receive the license then and there.

You both must: • Be at least 18 years old. If you’re younger, you need consent of parent or guardian. • Bring a government- issued valid picture ID (such as a driver’s license) that includes your full legal name and date of birth. • If you have been married before, bring Proof of Dissolution. You cannot apply for a marriage license if you are married, even if your divorce is almost final.

What to Do With the License

You receive an unsigned license. Here’s what happens to make it an official wedding certificate: • The license is good anywhere in California, regardless of which county issued it. It’s valid for 90 days. If 90 days pass before a wedding ceremony, you must get a new license. • Before the wedding, give the license to the person who’ll officiate at the ceremony. The officiant is required to review the license before conducting the ceremony. It’s a good idea to bring it to the rehearsal for go over it with the officiant, and of course bring it to the wedding. • After the ceremony, the officiant will complete and sign the license, and have it signed by bride, groom and at least one witness. • The officiant will return the license to the County Clerk’s office within 10 days of the ceremony, so it can be officially recorded. Once recorded, you can buy a copy of your wedding certificate (depending on the county, you don’t receive one automatically).

Where to Apply in the East Bay

In Contra Costa you can apply at the County Clerk’s office during weekdays from 8:00am to 4:30pm. In Alameda you can apply at the County Clerk’s office during weekdays from 8:30am to 4:30pm.
