    Earthquake Design per IS1893 (Part-4):2005

I have a category 1 structure (a very tall process column) and site specific studies arecarried out to get Sa/g values at different time periods. Since, it is a critical category-1 structure, a detailed analysis is required for MCE condition per sections 7.5.1, 8.1,8.3.1, 10.1.1 and 10.2 of IS-1893.

I understand that PV Elite 2009 version allows to carry a detailed analysis for responsespectrum method. Only problem is that it is not correctly calculating horizontal seismiccoefficient per section 8.3.1 of IS-1893.

PV Elite should use correct 'R' value of 2 (per NOTE below Table 3 of IS-1893) &correct 'I' value of 2 (per Table 2 of IS-1893).

R = 2 for steel refinery vessels / steel buildings (response reduction factor to take intoaccount the margins of safety, redundancy and ductility of the structure given in Noteunder Table 3 - IS1893 (PART 4)

I = Importance factor given in Table 2 IS 1893 (PART 4) is relative importanceassigned to the structure to take into account consequences of its damage.e.g.Importance factors for Category 1 structure is 2 as obtained from Table 2 of IS-1893.

However, PVElite is using 'R' value of 3 and 'I' value of 1. Thereby reducing thehorizontal seismic coefficient by 3.

Could you please check what can be done with PVElite 2009 version so that I can meetIS-1893 requirements for category-1 structure using site specific spectra.

A quick reply will be highly appreciated.

    Dear Hrushikesh,

Are you using the Seismic option in PV Elite of IS1893 - 2005 Simplified. There areinputs for R factor and I. So, you should be able to enter these values.

Please clarify if I have not answered your question.

    Dear Mandeep,

As per IS 1893(Part-4):2005 for structures of catagory 1 and 2 we need to do detailedanalysis.

In PV Elite both IS-1893-RSM or IS-1893-SCM is using only simplified method.

For detailed analysis we need to select "Response spectrum method" (As specified inPV Eliet help also) and response spectrum method does not have any input field for 'R'value and 'I' value.

    Dear Somnath,

The Response Spectrum option in PV Elite is a generic one (except for few codes). There is no response modification or importance factor when using the user definedspectrum (that is what you will use).

Some values are ghosted out depending on the type of spectrum selected. If thespectrum is ASCE, the appropriate values will light up.

So, if you are using the IS-1893 2005, you have the site spectrum then use section8.3.1 to modify the site spectrum using the R and I factors.

    Ah = ( Sa / g ) / ( R / I )

Then, input the Ah in the program as the design spectrum. If you are using the codespecific spectrum then refer to 8.3.2.

Another requirement in the IS-1893 std. is that 30% of response from the otherorthogonal direction should also be considered (7.3.2.1). To, implement this, in theShock Scale factor field put in 1.3 for X-dir and 0.3 for the Y-dir (vertical direction).

These factors would modify the spectrum to account for the directionality.

I am attaching a screen shot.

Let us know if you have further questions or comments.

I would just like to ask that the when we enter 0.3 for the Y-dir (vertical direction), inoutput, where it is reported or indirectly, which are the factors getting affected inreport.
