Presentation Notes
Mayumi, Salomon and Chang write in the paper ‘The ecological and consumption themes of the films of Hayao Miyazaki’ - According to Miyazaki (1996),the Japanese people have a strong tradition of telling stories of politics, economy, religions, arts, wars, and other human affairs using Emaki (a method of telling a story with a combi-nation of paintings and words) to portray events suchas those during the the Heian Period (794–1192) and the Kamakura Period (1192–1333). Miyazaki is clearly a follower of the Emaki tradition.

Loss of Identity

Workers at the Bathhouse are assigned one dimensional jobs

Once they forget their names and are given a new name, they are owned by Yubaba

Page 8: EarthDay 2015 Showing Anime Spirited Away

Greed and Selfishness Workers fight over “No Face”, a demon who seems to be

able to produce gold at will Once things go awry, the workers frantically try to save

themselves

Page 9: EarthDay 2015 Showing Anime Spirited Away

Over Consumption Even though No Face has all the gold and attention of the

bathhouse staff, he is still lonely He also has all the food he could want, but is never really

satisfied

* In the Fall the Green Group Club hosts the Oxfam Hunger Banquet which raises trans-disciplinary awareness of the Global Issues around Food and Food Production.

Human Impact on Nature

Pollution if Bad! Looks are not always what they seem. Something beautiful

can be destroyed via littering and improper disposals. The Stink Spirit who visits the bathhouse and is dejected

by the staff and waited on by Chihiro. The Stink Spirit is really a River God who is covered in filth

and even has a bike lodged in it..
