People once believed that Earth was the center of the solar system. Scientists finally learned that Earth is one of at least eight planets in our solar system and that all planets travel around the sun. Astronomers now know that our solar system is almost five billion years old and is part of at least 100 billion galaxies in the universe! Scientists continue to make new discoveries about our solar system all the time.

Have you ever looked into the night sky and wondered what was out there? Throughout time, people have gazed to the heavens. They are hoping to find clues about our place in the universe.

Long ago, people thought that Earth was the center of the solar system. They thought that the sun, moon, stars, and other planets revolved around it. Scientists finally learned that Earth is one of at least eight planets in our solar system. They found that all of the planets travel around the sun.

Our galaxy, the Milky Way, is a spiral galaxy.

Astronomers also now know that our solar system is almost 5 billion years old. It is located at the edge of the Milky Way galaxy. It is one of at least 100 billion galaxies in the universe. Each one of them has billions of stars! Our galaxy alone has about 200 billion stars.

The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy. It can be seen on a very dark night as a bright band in the sky. It is so wide that light would take 100,000 years to travel across it.

Space WanderersThe word planet comes from the Greek word for wanderer. Ancient Greeks noticed that some of the lights in the night sky seemed to wander. Now we know that planets move in an invisible path around the sun. That path is called an orbit.

The sun is a star at the center of the solar system. It isn’t the biggest or brightest star in our galaxy, but it is the star closest to Earth. It is the largest body in our solar system. In fact, it contains 99.8 percent of all of the mass in our solar system.

The sun is the major source of energy on Earth. It gives us light and heat. It’s responsible for the growth of plants, winds, ocean currents, and the water cycle. Without the sun, Earth would be very cold. It would be so cold that no living thing could survive.

Like other stars, the sun is made up of hot hydrogen and helium gases. The temperature in its center is about 15 million degrees Celsius (27 million degrees Fahrenheit).

The sun also creates gravity. The force of gravity between the sun and planets keeps Earth and other planets of the solar system in place and orbiting around the sun.

Now, That’s Big!The sun is a medium-sized star known as a yellow dwarf. It is not a large star, but 1.3 million Earths could fit inside of it!

What Is a Black Hole?Huge stars that use up all their

energy form black holes. As the stars die, their gravity causes them to collapse. Their gravity is so great that not even light can escape. Any object that is pulled into a black hole becomes invisible. A black hole is not really a hole. It is an area very crowded with matter. We only know a black hole is there because of the way an object that gets near one is pulled toward it. One black hole that scientists found is only a few kilometers wide. But it weighs as much as three billion suns!

My Very Educated Mother Just Served U s Nachos.

For years, people have used a sentence like the one above to remember the names of the eight planets. The first letter of each word stands for a planet. It also helps us remember the order of the planets from the sun. The planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

A planet is a large body that revolves in space around a star. It also reflects that star’s light. The sun is the star around which the planets in our solar system revolve. Most of the planets have more than one moon traveling around them. While the planets are revolving around the sun, they’re also spinning, or rotating. This is why we have day and night. When our part of Earth rotates away from the sun, it’s night. The time it takes for a planet to rotate once is the planet’s day. It takes Earth 24 hours to make one rotation, so Earth’s day is 24 hours long.

Planet RacesThe planets nearest the sun move the fastest. Mercury orbits the sun once every 88 days. It takes Neptune 165 years to travel once around the sun! A planet’s year is the number of days it takes to orbit the sun.

What Would You Weigh on Another Planet?

Do you think you know how much you weigh? When you stand on a scale on Earth, your weight is really a measure of the pull of gravity between you and Earth. How strong that pull is on other planets depends on how big the planet is. On planets with more mass than Earth, you would feel heavier. On planets with less mass, you would feel lighter.

So, if you weigh 441 newtons (100 pounds) on Earth, you would weigh only 166 newtons (38 pounds) on Mercury. Mercury has a much smaller mass than Earth has. If you could stand on Jupiter, you would weigh 1048 newtons (236 pounds)! Jupiter is about the size of 318 Earths. That’s a lot of mass. So, the person standing on it would weigh a whole lot, too.

Mercury and VenusMercury is the closest planet to the sun. It is called an

inner planet. Venus, Earth, and Mars are inner planets, too. Mercury is the smallest of the four. All inner planets have rocky surfaces.

Mercury is covered with craters, or shallow holes. They were made when the planet was struck by other space objects. Mercury can get very hot. It can be hot enough to melt lead! Its high temperature is about 425 degrees Celsius (797 degrees Fahrenheit). But at night, it can get as cold as 150 degrees below zero Celsius (238 degrees below zero Fahrenheit). The big range is due to Mercury’s long days. One day on Mercury is about the same as 59 Earth days. One night is about that long, too. It can be very cold away from the sun for 59 days, and it can be very hot so near to the sun!
