OUR SOLAR SYSTEM!*Eight Planets

*4 Rocky Planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars

*4 Gas Planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune

*Moons, comets, asteroids, and dust

Page 3: Earth in space and time

THE SUN

*About 5,000 Celsius!

*Sustains all life on Earth

*Closest star to the Earth

Page 4: Earth in space and time

HOW BIG IS THE SUN?*Basketball=sun

*Pea=earth

Page 5: Earth in space and time

EARTH: OUR HOME!*Fifth largest of the eight planets

*About 93 million miles from the sun

*About 70% water

*Has a 23.5% tilt

Page 6: Earth in space and time

EARTH’S MOTIONS*Earth has three motions:

*Spins on an imaginary line

*Travels around the sun

*Moves through the milky way

Page 7: Earth in space and time

EARTH’S ROTATION*Full rotation=24 days

*Earth rotates every 24 hours

*Earth orbits the sun every 365 days

Page 8: Earth in space and time

THE SEASONS*The earth’s axis creates the seasons

*We live in the northern hemisphere:

*summer=facing the sun

*winter=facing away

MOON

*Does not create it’s own light

*Reflects the light of the sun

*Significantly smaller than earth

*Has no life of any kind

Page 11: Earth in space and time

NIGHT/DAY*During a rotation night/day

*Earth facing sun=day

*Earth facing away=night

MOON PHASES*The moon is always circling the earth

*As it moves, its appearance changes

*One month=One full cycle

*Lets take a look!!
