During Archean:
• Atmosphere extremely different: little
free oxygen
• Impacts common early on, drop off
by around 3.8 Ga
• No large continental masses known
(however, new very old zircons
indicate continental-type crust present
by at least 4.40 Ga!)

The First Archean Life Form
Microfossils from the Apex Chert, North Pole, Australia (left).
These organisms are Archean in age, approximately 3.465 billion years old, and
resemble filamentous cyanobacteria (right).
The colonies of single celled organisms like cyanobacteria form “stromatolites”
(lower right).
Archaean stromatolites are the first direct fossil traces of life on Earth,
Proterozoic Eon
Proterozoic is distinct from Archean in:
• Clear evidence of "modern-style"
(continent-scale) plate tectonics
• HUGE deposits of Banded Iron
Formations during 1st half of
Paleoproterozoic
• Complex unicellular, and first
multicellular life, indications of higher
levels of oxygen
Snowball Earth and the Garden of Ediacara
The Neoproterozoic Era (the uppermost
of Proterozoic) has recently been
divided into three Periods:
Tonian (1000 - 850 Ma),
Cryogenian ("ice origins“ : Snowball
Earth glaciations: 850 - 630 Ma)
Ediacaran (Springs, Australia: 630 - 542
Ma).
Ediacaran is the first appearance of the
trace fossil Trichophycus pedum (and
thus the oldest biostratigraphically-
determined boundary).

Ordovician life forms
The end of the Ordovician period, extinction events occurred, perhaps due to a
concurrent ice age.
Silurian life forms
Devonian life forms
Placoderm
Around 380 to 375 Ma (Devonian), the first
tetrapods evolved from fish.
Eventually, some of them became so well
adapted to terrestrial life that they spent their
adult lives on land, although they hatched in
the water and returned to lay their eggs. This
was the origin of the amphibians.
About 365 Ma (late Devonian), another period
of extinction occurred, perhaps as a result of
global cooling.
Devonian Period
Carboniferous life forms
Plants evolved seeds, which dramatically accelerated their spread on land,
around this time (by approximately 360 Ma).
340 Ma (Mississippian), the amniotic egg evolved, which could be laid on
land, giving a survival advantage to tetrapod embryos.
This resulted in the divergence of amniotes (reptiles) from amphibians.

Mesozoic Era
The Mesozoic is divided into three time periods:
1. Triassic (245-208 Ma), 2. Jurassic (208-146 Ma), and
3. Cretaceous (146-65 Ma).

The Mesozoic was also a time
of great change in the
terrestrial vegetation.
The early Mesozoic was
dominated by ferns, cycads,
ginkgophytes,
Modern gymnosperms, such
as conifers, first appeared in
their current recognizable
forms in the early Triassic.
By the middle of the
Cretaceous, the earliest
angiosperms had appeared
and began to diversify, largely
taking over from the other
plant groups.

Extinction and the Rise of Mammals At the end of the Cretaceous, 65 million
years ago, (K-T boundary) not only did the dinosaurs disappear completely, but
so did flying reptiles (pterosaurs), and marine reptiles (ichthyosaurs and
plesiosaurs).
In fact, between 60 and 80% of all animal species, including many marine
forms, disappeared.
Evidence of K/T Mass Extinction
(Cretaceous–Tertiary extinction)
Paleogeography
The Cenozoic is divided into two
periods, the Tertiary and the
Quaternary.
India collided with Asia between 55
and 45 million years ago;
Arabia collided with Eurasia,
closing the Tethys ocean, around
35 million years ago.
The Cenozoic Era: the Age of Mammals.
ANIMALS
Grass played a very important
role in this era, shaping the evolution of
the birds and mammals that fed on it.
The Cenozoic is full of mammals
both strange and familiar, including
chalicotheres, creodonts, whales,
primates, entelodonts, saber-toothed
cats, mastodons and mammoths, three-
toed horses, giant rhinoceros like
Indricotherium, and brontotheres.

Oligocene (38-25 Ma)
Ground sloth
During the Pliocene, the last epoch of Tertiary
period, the Bovids begin to rise to dominate the
mammal fauna.
There are also reductions in the numbers of
horses, rhinoceroses, elephants, tapirs,
peccaries and camels.
Rodents, including ground-squirrels and
beavers, are abundant.
An important element in the mammal fauna of
this time was the rise of the higher Primates,
including early man.
.
Pliocene ( 5-1.8 Ma)
The Pleistocene is the first epoch of
Quaternary period.
It is dominated by the Ice Ages when
extensive ice sheets spread towards the
equator from both the Antarctic and Arctic
regions covering much of Europe and North
America.
The last of these ice sheets disappeared
about 10,000 years ago.
This period also witnesses the widespread
extinction of many species of mammals,
particularly giant forms.
Saber-toothed cats, cave lions, cave bears,
giant deer, woolly rhinoceroses, and woolly
mammoths, which reached a height of 3.7
metres at the shoulder, all roamed during
the Pleistocene epoch.

Holocene the second
epoch of Quaternary
period is the period of
geological time since
the end of the last Ice
Age 10,000 years ago.
Holocene (10,000 Yrs. – Present)
The picture shows a mesolithic hunting group, who lived in the period just after
the last Ice Age.
The Cenozoic Era has been a period of
long-term cooling.
After the tectonic creation of Drake
Passage, when South America fully
detached from Antarctica during the
Oligocene, the climate cooled
significantly due to the advent of the
Antarctic Circumpolar Current which
brought cool deep Antarctic water to
the surface.
The cooling trend continued in the
Miocene, with relatively short warmer
periods.
When South America became attached
to North America creating the Isthmus
of Panama, the Arctic region cooled
due to the strengthening of the
Humboldt and Gulf Stream currents,
eventually leading to the glaciations of
the Pleistocene ice age, the current
interglacial of which is the Holocene
epoch.
