In 1963, President Kennedy and Senator Nelson toured the US speaking to groups to raise awareness on environmental issues.

After JFK’s assassination in 1963, Senator Nelson worked tirelessly to promote
legislation that would protect America’s natural resources, reduce both air and water pollution and protect wildlife from extinction.

• 1970 The Clean Air Act was passed by Congress setting restrictions on air pollution
• 1972 The Clean Water Act was passed protecting our rivers, lakes and streams
• 1973 The Endangered Species Act was passed to protect wildlife and their environment

• 1970 The National Resources Defense Council was founded. Today this group is the leader in environmental advocacy with more than 1 million members and a staff of over 300 legal professionals, scientists and environmental specialists
